Strongest ever field for Gujarat Kensville Challenge

Jan 30 2013, 8:42am CST | by

Ahmedabad, Jan 30 (IANS) The third edition of the Gujarat Kensville Challenge golf will see the strongest ever field as both the Indian Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and European Challenge season for 2013 season tees off here Thursday.

Ahmedabad, Jan 30 — The third edition of the Gujarat Kensville Challenge golf will see the strongest ever field as both the Indian Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and European Challenge season for 2013 season tees off here Thursday.

The Kensville Challenge which has now become the regular season-opener for both the Tours will for the first time feature a Major champion, Rich Beem, who won the 2002 PGA Championships winner, ahead of Tiger Woods.

The stellar field also includes a bunch of former European Tour winners, from Rhys Davies to Raymond Russell, Jose-Phillipe Lima and Daniel Vanscik.

There is a also a group of Asian Tour winners, like the 2011 Kensville winner, Gaganjeet Bhullar (4 wins), Shiv Kapur, Rahil Gangjee, Himmat Rai and old warhorse, Gaurav Ghei (3 wins).

Scott Barr is a surprise entrant, having last played in the Challenge Tour back in 2008. He is now a regular on Asian Tour. The other player, who makes his maiden appearance in Kensville is Terry Pilkadaris, a former three-time winner on Asian Tour, who now plays on OneAsia.

Two other youngsters, who could make an impact on international golf in the near future, who make a return to Kensville after making their debut here last year, are An Byeong-hun and Peter Uihlein, the 2009 and 2010 US Amateur champions, who turned pro in 2011 and played Challenge Tour in 2012.

Adding to the excitement is a bunch of young Indians, who are turning pro with this event.

Led by two-time Indian amateur champion, Seenappa Chikkrangappa, Angad Cheema, the reigning Indian amateur champion, 16-year-old Shubhankar Sharma, Khalin Joshi and Honey Baisoya. This lot is hoping to play the Indian PGTI Tour and then gradually move to Asian and higher Tours.

Most Boring Selection Show Ever: Tom Watson Picks His Three Ryder Cup Wild-Cards

Sep 2 2014 7:59pm CDT | Source: SportsGrid

U.S. captain Tom Watson has had to soldier on without Tiger Woods, which is actually a blessing, although Tom doesn’t see it that way I’m sure. So for those who don’t follow international golf, Woods withdrew his name for consideration for the U.S. Ryder Cup team, due to an old back injury from cheating on his wife and running into a tree competition. So the qualifiers for the U.S. team are Jim Furyk, Matt Kuchar, Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, ...

Ryder Cup 2014: Predictions for Tom Watson's Team USA Picks

Sep 2 2014 12:59pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

With the 2014 Ryder Cup on the horizon at the end of September at Gleneagles in Perthshire, Scotland, Team USA captain Tom Watson has a major decision to make Tuesday night as he selects three names to round out the 12-man roster. Nine players automatically qualified, and one Tiger Woods has already withdrawn his name, so Watson's job is not all that difficult given the players he has to choose from to complete his roster. Let's take ...

Paul McGinley has named Stephen Gallacher, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood in his Europe team for the Ryder Cup. McGinley had narrowed his selection pool down to five names with former world No 1 Luke Donald and Italian Francesco Molinari the unlucky players who will miss out on this year’s highly-anticipated showdown at Gleneagles. Could This Be Tony Romo's Last Stand?

Sep 1 2014 8:01am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Tony Romo concedes that his age and recent back surgeries have only multiplied the already massive public interest in him as Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback. And not in a flattering fashion. Reporters, bloggers, sports anchors and adjoining camera crews have followed Romo like ducklings at every opportunity this preseason, the norm ever since the undrafted free agent from Eastern Illinois beat the odds and earned the starting job midway through the 2006 season. But ma ...

2014 Ryder Cup: Players on the Bubble Getting Hot as Captain's Picks Approach

Aug 29 2014 7:10pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

For a time it looked like Tom Watson, the 2014 Ryder Cup captain, had little choice but to pull the hair from his wonderfully coiffed, 64-year-old melon. There was Tiger Woods’ back, Jason Dufner’s neck and Dustin Johnson’s something or other. Who would Watson pick? Who could he pick? Behind closed doors, Watson must have been as happy as a hobbit during second breakfast when he heard Woods withdraw from Ryder Cup consideration. Who wants to be the captain who didn’t select Woods, e ...

Gender gap favours young women more than men

Aug 25 2014 7:38am CDT | Source: Sportsnet.ca

LONDON, Ont. — For every Tiger Woods, there’s a Michelle Wie, a Lexi Thompson and a Lydia Ko. Much-hyped teenage stars are all over women’s golf. Thompson won a major championship at the age of 19, and Ko was 15 and 16 when she won the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open in 2012 and 2013. Canada has a phenom of its own in Brooke Henderson, the 16-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ont., who recently finished second at th ...
