Touring India is a tough challenge: Clarke

Feb 12 2013, 8:32am CST | by

Sydney, Feb 12 (IANS) Australia captain Michael Clarke has said touring India for a Test series always remains the toughest challenge.

Sydney, Feb 12 — Australia captain Michael Clarke has said touring India for a Test series always remains the toughest challenge.

Clarke, who left for India Tuesday morning, said the tour remains a huge challenge because the Australian team hasn't won many matches in the sub-continent.

"Touring India is as tough a challenge as I've had in my career. Every time I've been there on a Test tour it's been extremely difficult, hence the Australian team hasn't won that much over there. So it's a huge challenge, the players know that," Clarke was quoted as saying in the Australian media.

The Australian captain said sending an advanced tour party will help the cricketers acclimatise to the Indian conditions.

"That's partly why we're trying to prepare as well as we can by sending players early to get them used to conditions, to give ourselves the best chance. We know it's going to be tough, we know how good India is, but we look forward to it," he said.

Asked about his unimpressive performance when Australia last toured in 2010, Clarke said: "What I've learned in the past is how important preparation is for my personal performance. I need to make sure I've done all my training to give myself the best chance of scoring runs."

Clarke said he was looking forward to play the warm-up game starting Saturday in Chennai.

"That's what I'm looking forward to over the next few days. Getting into the Indian conditions, batting on those wickets, facing a lot of reverse swing, a lot of spin bowling, and making sure when that first ball's bowled in that first Test that I'll be as well prepared as I was for this summer.

"I'd really like to play that three-dayer. I'll be advised by Alex [Kountouris] the physio once I land in India but at this stage my plan is to play that three-dayer. There is so much time I don't think there is any doubt I'll be fit for the first Test," he said.

Pakistan vs. Australia, 1st Test: Day 3 Highlights, Scorecard, Report

Oct 24 2014 8:47am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Pakistan took control of the opening Test against Australia in Dubai, bowling the visitors out for 303 runs and building a lead of 189 by stumps on Day 3. The Baggy Greens were in a good position going into the day's play, but the batting—David Warner's stylish century aside—fell well short under pressure from the Pakistan attack. Pakistan in turn added 38 runs without loss in the last 13 overs of the day, giving them every chance of victory. Michael Clarke' ...

Australia Entering Test Series vs. Pakistan Strangely Staring into the Unknown

Oct 20 2014 12:14pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

For so much of Australia's cricket during the nation's recent Test renaissance, Michael Clarke and his team have enjoyed the comforts of predictability, their knowledge of understood quantities and the conviction that comes with stability and continuity.  Once their groove was recaptured in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane last November, Australia waltzed to seven emphatic victories in eight Tests against England and South Africa, recording two serie ...

Could Shane Watson's Calf Injury Cost Him Place in Australia Test XI Long-Term?

Sep 26 2014 3:59am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Sitting on the sidelines through injury can typically go one of two ways for a Test cricketer. For some, their absence heightens the sense of their true worth, seeing them raced back into the side once healthy. For others, their layoff affords an opportunity to another, jeopardising their place in the team as a new star emerges. As Australia prepare to tackle Pakistan in the UAE without him, Shane Watson seems precariously placed between such outcomes. Hampered by a calf injur ...
