McLaren receive FIA award for environmental excellence

Feb 15 2013, 6:18am CST | by

Woking (Surrey), Feb 15 (IANS) McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team has become first motor sport stakeholder in the world to receive the FIA Institute's Environmental Award.

Woking (Surrey), Feb 15 — McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team has become first motor sport stakeholder in the world to receive the FIA Institute's Environmental Award.

The award is part of a broader initiative between the FIA, the world body of motorsports, and the FIA Institute aimed at evaluating and reducing the environmental impact of motor sport.

It is also the highest level attainable within the FIA Institute Sustainability Programme, which helps motor sport stakeholders to measure, improve and be recognised for their environmental performance.

Organisations that sign up are rated against three levels of environmental performance, so measuring their achievement and providing a benchmark against which to improve.

Shortly after the scheme was announced, in June 2012, McLaren applied for accreditation and underwent a series of stringent assessments set out by FIA Institute environmental experts. The F1 team achieved the highest level through demonstrating a commitment to continual improvement and impressive environmental awareness throughout the entire organisation.

FIA president Jean Todt said: "McLaren's award is an important step in the recognition by motor sport of the social responsibility our community must acknowledge if our championships are to remain in tune with the key environmental debates we are all a part of. The FIA and the FIA Institute are researching the environmental impact of motor sports across all our world championships."

So the fracking battle begins, but is it clear whos right?

Jul 29 2014 11:30am CDT | Source: the guardian

Its less intrusive than wind and reduces emissions long term, yet the nimbys and green groups stand unitedHere is a troubling truth for environmental groups. The biggest grassroots green campaign in Britain in the past decade has been one they have almost universally opposed: the groundswell of local opposition to onshore wind farms. The likes of Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth may have been right to ufsupport wind power as an inc ...

Tools needed for a restoration?

Jul 26 2014 8:07am CDT | Source: Bike Forums

I'm not new to working on bikes, but I am new to working on them the 'proper' way. Such as having the right tool to pull a bottom bracket apart and not using channel locks.... :) So, I picked up a mid-60's road bike off the curb and my original intent was to slap some tires on it and ride around since it was a Sears bike. I'm new to the cycling community and didn't know the Weinmann brakes and Campy dérailleurs were special things. Now this has become ...

Why is bicycling culture so snobby?

Jul 25 2014 3:10pm CDT | Source: Bike Forums

I'm fairly new here and relatively new to bicycling in general. My girlfriend and I got into it about a year and a half ago here in Seattle for transportation/recreation purposes --- no serious racing or other competition. I've been into many "scenes", be it cars, or motorcycles, or bouldering, but man, I have NEVER --- EVER --- encountered the level of pretentious, exclusionary, and downright snobby behavior that bicyclist as a group exude. Of ...

Late 60's Mercier

Jul 24 2014 8:59am CDT | Source: Bike Forums

Hi Everyone, I come up with a late 60’s Mercier special tour de France bike. It is a single speed road bike. Handlebars and pedals are upgraded. Seller says that bike is in a good condition but brakes need adjusting and chain should be changed. I don’t have a big knowledge about bikes, especially vintage ones. That’s why, I don’t know how much does it worth. I would be appreciated if you could help me. So that, I can offer a reasonable price. Thank you, $_20.JPG $_20.J ...

New to Vintage Cycling

Jul 20 2014 12:21am CDT | Source: Bike Forums

Hi there Bike Forums members! I have recently fallen in love with cycling, and I'm hoping you can aid me in my quest to find a great vintage bike for a newbie. A bit of my back story... I've always enjoyed riding a bike, but I only recently started riding longer distances, and I want to go much, much farther (I would love to do a century by the end of the summer). I just moved to NYC in May, and cycling ha ...

What is good enough?

Jul 18 2014 5:38am CDT | Source: thehubsa

I am a keen MTB rider as in my humble opnion with relative good skills and ability. I am fortunate enough to be able to spend 20-30 k on a bike. I believe we live in a society where the media and some LBS wants us to believe that the expensive bikes and components are the way to go. I know there is a lot of recreational riders that wants to know what is goog enough for a good solid ride. I am talking about the normal 30-50 km MTB races. It will be brilliant if someon ...
