McLaren receive FIA award for environmental excellence

Woking (Surrey), Feb 15 (IANS) McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team has become first motor sport stakeholder in the world to receive the FIA Institute's Environmental Award.

Woking (Surrey), Feb 15 — McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team has become first motor sport stakeholder in the world to receive the FIA Institute's Environmental Award.

The award is part of a broader initiative between the FIA, the world body of motorsports, and the FIA Institute aimed at evaluating and reducing the environmental impact of motor sport.

It is also the highest level attainable within the FIA Institute Sustainability Programme, which helps motor sport stakeholders to measure, improve and be recognised for their environmental performance.

Organisations that sign up are rated against three levels of environmental performance, so measuring their achievement and providing a benchmark against which to improve.

Shortly after the scheme was announced, in June 2012, McLaren applied for accreditation and underwent a series of stringent assessments set out by FIA Institute environmental experts. The F1 team achieved the highest level through demonstrating a commitment to continual improvement and impressive environmental awareness throughout the entire organisation.

FIA president Jean Todt said: "McLaren's award is an important step in the recognition by motor sport of the social responsibility our community must acknowledge if our championships are to remain in tune with the key environmental debates we are all a part of. The FIA and the FIA Institute are researching the environmental impact of motor sports across all our world championships."

Environment secretary argues bees and other pollinating insects should be treated like top footballers, with excellent accommodation and the best dietThe gentle hum of a lawnmower, one of the reassuring sounds of spring and summer, should be heard less often if Britains bee population is to be protected, the environment secretary will say on Tuesday.Gardeners should give up their lawnmowers and let their grass go rogue to protect daisies and lavender, which provid ...

Internal Cable Routing?

Nov 3 2014 12:15pm CST | Source: Bike Forums

I know may of you may say that it's a personal preference thing. But I'm trying to determine if I should expect it on any new bike worth consideration. i.e. I've not yet determined if any of the Motobecane's have the right geometry for me (will be fitted this week), but I do like the prices for the Ti bikes. And I prefer to do any bike work myself....if not for the savings, for the sh ...

Best possible way to lock my bike and prevent theft?

Nov 2 2014 9:59pm CST | Source: Bike Forums

Yea, I know I can find tons of information on this topic, but I just wanted a bit more specific advice related to my situation. I live in a fairly large city. It's not very cycle friendly at all and people here don't take cycling seriously at all. It's also winter, which lessens the chance of bike thieves out there. However, I ride my bike to work everyday and school once a week. At work, I have to lock my bicycle in front of a s ...

My New 1999 Trek 7300...

Oct 29 2014 12:42am CDT | Source: Bike Forums

I bought a new Trek 7300 back in 1999. But I never rode it very much and it sat in my garage for 15 years. I've spent most of my time since then riding recumbent bikes. I recently made a foray into small folding bikes and learned a few things about comfort on a traditional diamond frame bike. So I thought about my 15 year old 7300, and applied some of the lessons learned. I changed the saddle to a Selle Royal Lookin Moderate. I replaced the stem, as the original ...

Night riding

Oct 28 2014 12:50am CDT | Source: Bike Forums

When I ride at night I use a always on headlight and a blinking rear. See a lot of riders blinking front and rear. I'm thinking about always on front and rear. I understand that some cities and counties don't allow blinking lights on anything but emergency vehicles . Some people find always blinking bicycle lights annoying. What do yo ...

Car Free - the small sacrifices

Oct 27 2014 9:09pm CDT | Source: Bike Forums

I'm riding home from work this evening, down a residential street. It was garbage day, so all the wheeled garbage bins are lining the street. I see this guy pull into his driveway, stop, hop out of his car, and pull his garbage bin from the curb to just along side of his car. Then he hops back in his car, reaches out his window, and proceeds to pull his car into his driveway, while towing his roll ...
