Malaga eyes more miracles in Champions League

Madrid, Feb 18 — Spanish Primera Liga football club Malaga are seeking more miracles in the Champions League, warming up for the last 16 tie with Porto Tuesday night.

Malaga travel to Portugal in fine form after a 1-0 home win against Athletic Club Bilbao Saturday evening, a game in which coach Manuel Pellegrini was able to rest some of his key players, such as Martin Demichelis, Joaquin Sanchez and Jeremy Toulalan, reports Xinhua.

Malaga's achievements this season have been nothing short of heroic: following on from their fourth place finish at the end of last season, the club's plans for the summer were hit by economic problems when it appeared owner, Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani was looking to sell.

Al Thani remains as the owner of the club, but has massively reduced his investment, meaning Malaga were forced to sell key players such as Spain international, Santi Cazorla and striker, Solomon Rondon over the summer, while left back Nacho Monreal also left during this January's transfer window.

With money at a premium, Pellegrini was forced to make do with last minute signings such as former Barcelona and Benfica forward, Javier Saviola and Paraguayan international, Roque Santa Cruz, who arrived on loan from Manchester City just before the start of the season.

Many expected Malaga to crash out of Europe at the first hurdle, but the makeshift team made short work of Panathinaikos in the qualifying round and then finished top of a complicated group containing AC Milan, Anderlecht and Zenit St. Petersburg, while maintaining a challenge in the Primera Liga.

This success came despite another blow to morale when UEFA placed an embargo on the club and announced that as a result of unpaid debts, Malaga will not be able to compete in Europe next season.

Pellegrini has somehow managed to keep morale high despite this setback and continued delays in payments of his players' wages.

Given the economic situation at the club it is obvious that the further Malaga can go into the competition, the more money they will earn and better the chance of everyone being paid, but there is little doubt that many from the current squad will be leaving at the end of the season, while Pellegrini is being spoken of as a possible signing for English Premier League giants, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Why Vincent Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala Could Become Best EPL Defensive Tandem

Aug 20 2014 12:15am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Vincent Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala could become the best pair of centre-backs in the Premier League because anyone who plays next to Kompany has such a chance. That is how good Kompany is. "Even a fire hydrant could score playing with (Wayne) Gretzky," said then Edmonton Oilers general manager Glen Sather. Those words were meant to denigrate a player Sather was trying justify trading, but that fact does not make those words less true. So it is with Kompany and whoever plays next to h ...

Aug 18 2014 9:11am CDT | Source: Winner Sports

Big things were expected from Matija Nastasic when he arrived at Manchester City back in 2012. Rated as one of the most promising young defenders around following his fine spell with Italian side Fiorentina, the signing of the then teenager by City was considered a major coup for the Citizens. Newcastle vs. Manchester City: Key Selection Decisions for Manuel Pellegrini

Aug 16 2014 7:27am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The climax to last season is now a distant memory. Last May, Manchester City managed to overtake Liverpool at the death to secure their second league title in three years, capping a wonderful first season in charge for Manuel Pellegrini. But that means nothing this weekend when the defence of their title begins away at Newcastle. The last time City won the league, under Roberto Mancini in 2012, the summer spending spree that followed was haphazard poor, leading to ...

Manchester City Look Weak With Most Starters

Manchester City lost 3-0 against Arsenal in the FA Community Shield just a week before the 2014-15 Premier League finally commences. Takeaways from Arsenal's mostly meaningless win over Manchester City

Aug 11 2014 11:23am CDT | Source: SBNation

The Community Shield is an odd little beast. Not quite real game, not quite friendly, the top flight's traditional curtain raiser operates on a stage of its very own. On the inside, it's the most important thing in the world, replete with flamethrowers and wonder-goals and trophy-raising and all the trappings of a major trophy. On the outside, it's a tarted-up joke, draped in misguided self importance and amusingly out-of-sync pomp ...
