Ali Bacher hail selectors who made Smith captain

Feb 19 2013, 10:24am CST | by

Johannesburg, Feb 19 (IANS) Former South Africa cricket chief Ali Bacher has lauded the selection committee which made Graeme Smith the captain of the side after the southpaw had played just eight Tests.

Johannesburg, Feb 19 — Former South Africa cricket chief Ali Bacher has lauded the selection committee which made Graeme Smith the captain of the side after the southpaw had played just eight Tests.

Smith, who was asked to lead the side in 2003, has now become the most successful Test captain with 49 victories in 101 matches surpassing Ricky Ponting (48 wins out of 77 games). He also holds the record of captaining in most Tests.

"Smith was 22 years old, had played only eight Tests, 22 ODIs and had hardly any captaincy experience," Bacher was quoted as saying by The Star.

"We need also to doff our caps to the 2003 National Selection Committee, chaired by Omar Henry, for their vision and I would say their courage in appointing Graeme as captain."

Bacher, a former captain who appeared in 12 Tests, recalled the time when Smith was appointed skipper.

"After his appointment as captain, coach Bob Woolmer said, and with good intent, that he thought Graeme should relinquish the captaincy, for the time being anyhow, fearing that the pressures of captaincy would be too much for him so early in his international career.

"Like one of our all-time greats, Jacques Kallis, Graeme is only now being acknowledged for his immense contribution to the success of our cricket team over the past 10 years. He will go down in the history of the game as our most successful Test captain ever," said Bacher.

Alviro Petersen Fails Against Zimbabwe—Time to Drop Him from Tests

Aug 10 2014 2:21pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

One of South Africa’s strengths over the last few years has been their consistency in selection in Tests. Even when players have looked a touch out of form, they have often been given the chance to prove that they’ve not lost their touch. They have been given time to come back and make a statement. Many players have repaid the faith of the selectors by getting runs when they matter most, but at some point, the faith will run out. Alviro Petersen is ...

Was Hashim Amla Too Bold with Declaration at Galle in 1st Test in Charge?

Jul 19 2014 8:26am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

No matter what Hashim Amla decided with regard to his declaration against Sri Lanka during his first Test in charge, it was always going to be under the microscope. If South Africa batted on for too long, he would have been called too conservative. Now, after setting Sri Lanka a target of 370 with four sessions to go, many will be wondering if he wasn’t perhaps being too generous. South Africa’s second innings showed that there were still runs in this pitch, i ...

JP Duminy Reaffirms His Talent, Now Must Embrace Senior Role for South Africa

Jul 17 2014 8:47am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

It is perhaps hard to believe, but at the age of 30, JP Duminy is one of South Africa’s more senior batsmen in terms of age and experience in all forms of cricket. With Graeme Smith gone from the international stage and Jacques Kallis now only playing one-day internationals, Duminy needs to step up and be a leader for the Proteas. He made some progress toward that role in his side’s first innings against Sri Lanka, as he ...
