Steve McClaren quits as FC Twente coach

Feb 26 2013, 6:26am CST | by

The Hague, Feb 26 (IANS) Steve McClaren has quit FC Twente with immediate effect following disappointing results in this season, the Dutch football club said Tuesday.

The Hague, Feb 26 — Steve McClaren has quit FC Twente with immediate effect following disappointing results in this season, the Dutch football club said Tuesday.

The 51-year-old English coach handed in his contract which ran until 2014. McClaren had returned to Twente in January 2012.

After a disappointing sixth place last season, Twente are currently running fifth. They lost 1-2 to SC Heerenveen Saturday, Xinhua reports.

"After the defeat to Heerenveen the board of FC Twente and I tried to find a solution to the difficult period the team has been going through," McClaren said on the club' s website. "We talked about the expectations of the club, how European qualification was key each season and finishing in the top 4."

"Despite being joint top at the winter break and second four weeks ago, recent results and performances have seen criticism, protest and demonstration from both supporters and the media," he added.

"Saturday's result has seen further adverse reactions and with two home games coming up we feel the team needs the support and backing from the supporters."

"I also needed assurances about my position both now and in the future which I know in the present situation is difficult," McClaren said.

"After much discussion and deliberation those assurances weren' t forthcoming and we have agreed it's in the best interest of the club that I leave. We agree the club is bigger than any one individual and Twente is too big in my heart to stand in the way of its progress."

McClaren already coached Twente between 2008 and 2010 and in his last year he led the club to their first top league title. McClaren also worked as coach of Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough, VfL Wolfsburg and England.

His assistants Alfred Schreuder, Boudewijn Pahlplatz and Youri Mulder will provisionally take over his coaching job at Twente. A permanent successor might be appointed in due course.

Rihanna Has Quit Music To Become An Umpire In Junior Hurling

Jun 10 2014 5:09am CDT | Source: balls

Northampton Town v Bristol Rovers - Sky Bet League Two
Balls.ie Thanks to Brian Crowley for sending us this gem from the Cork Avondhu-Imokilly Junior A hurling final. Russell Rovers took on Ballyhea and the weather turned sour quite quickly. Queue the Russell Rovers completely neutral umpire deciding to lend a help hand to his goalkeeper by letting him stand under his umbrella. Frankly I’m disgusted. This kind of behaviour goes against everything Junior football and hurling stands for. Steve McClaren eat your heart. Balls.ie - Irish Sports Websit ...

Derby County v Queens Park Rangers - Sky Bet Championship Playoff Final
LONDON — Queens Park Rangers secured an immediate return to the Premier League — and a promotion windfall of at least 80 million pounds ($135 million) — by beating Derby 1-0 in the League Championship playoff final on Saturday thanks to a last-minute goal by Bobby Zamora. QPR played the final 31 minutes with 10 men following Gary O’Neil’s straight red card for a cynical last-man foul but in a rare foray forward, Harry Redknapp’s team grabbed the winner when ...

A terrible tackle by Gary O'Neil took QPR down to 10 men, but Bobby Zamora rescued them with the second playoff-winning goal of his career, sinking Derby County. Queens Park Rangers have been the butt of jokes across the football world over the last three years. They celebrated a loss to keep themselves up two seasons ago, went down with one of the largest wage bills in the Premier League last season and have more wages on the ...
