"Former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Byron Scott, Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Malone and San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer are the top candidates to replace Del Negro, one NBA executive said.
"Indiana Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw and ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy also are candidates, as is former Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry, who coached the Clippers for three seasons, from 200o to 2003, a league executive said."
Turner also confirms the Clippers are interested in current Memphis Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins although he might be a bit too pricey. The Grizzlies also have not given other teams permission to speak with their coach, as per Tuner citing an NBA executive.
CBS Sports' Royce Young says "And with Chris Paul headed for free agency, the team is obviously keen on bringing in a replacement CP3 likes."
Young reiterates Scott has a history with Paul during their days with the then-New Orleans Hornets (now known as the New Orleans Pelicans). Malone also has roots with the same team when he served as Monty Williams' assistant.
A May 23 featured story on Philly.com emphasizes Scott having worked with Paul before won't necessarily give him an advantage over the other contenders. The Clippers apparently haven't talked to any of the candidates yet, and they are just starting the search process.
