MLB: LA Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig Sets Four-Day Sales Record

Jun 12 2013, 2:19am CDT | by

Rookie Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers has broken the team’s four-day sales record for player merchandise over the weekend.

Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers broke the team’s four-day sales record for player merchandise over the weekend.

Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports the Dodgers sold more Puig-related merchandise from Thursday to Sunday than they had ever sold of any player over a four-day period. This beats out big-name players such as Manny Ramirez, Fernando Valenzuela or Hideo Nomo.

Hernandez reports the team sold approximately 3,000 units of Puig-related merchandise in that four-day window. These include 1,600 t-shirts ($28), 400 “Viva Puig” t-shirts ($28) and 600 jerseys ($225 for the authentic version, $110 for the replica ones).

Lon Rosen, the Dodgers’ chief marketing officer, says Puig has the ideal characteristics of a player who drives merchandise sales.

“He’s a real exciting player that drives merchandise. He’s a good-looking guy, great personality. What he does in the batter’s box, what he does on the field, he’s a five-tool player. He energizes the crowd.”

The Examiner’s Tarringo Vaughan says Puig has even filmed a television commercial with first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Rosen says the team is committed to Puig staying true to who he is as a person and as a player who is dedicated to continued growth.

“We’re not going to throw everything at him at once because that puts a lot of pressure on him. We want him to have fun playing, keep working hard, learn to deal with the media.”

Puig made his MLB debut on June 3. In nine games played for the Dodgers, he has 16 hits on a .471 average with 10 RBIs and four home runs, per ESPN stats.

MLB World Series Odds Update: Angels, Dodgers surge to top

Sep 2 2014 1:41pm CDT | Source: SBNation

LA teams hold down the top two spots on the World Series betting board. The Angels and Dodgers are both hot and threatening to produce an all-LA final. The Los Angeles Dodgers entered their weekend series against San Diego on a 5-1 SU run, and they have the same line when it comes to favorites to win the World Series - 5-1. That leaves them tied with the other Los Angeles team which leap-frogged a few teams on the weekend with a sweep of Oakland to sit a ...

Yoenis Cespedes’ Advice To Rusney Castillo: ‘Don’t Get Overwhelmed’

Aug 30 2014 6:50pm CDT | Source: Yardbarker: MLB

The bright lights of Fenway Park await Rusney Castillo. The Cuban outfielder’s impending arrival to the Boston Red Sox will be filled with promise, expectations and, inherently, a great deal of pressure. Those familiar with Castillo, including Red Sox outfielder and fellow Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes, are confident in the 27-year-old’s ability to adapt to life as a Major League Baseball player. It won’t be an easy transition, though, and Ca ...

Los Angeles Dodgers: An Early Free Agency and Offseason Primer

Aug 26 2014 1:12am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Hanley Ramirez clearly headlines the Los Angeles Dodgers’ approach to the offseason, but he is far from the only point of curiosity. An outfield logjam loaded with big league regulars and a top-heavy pitching staff that all of a sudden needs help only adds to the list of issues Ned Colletti must sort out before the 2015 season begins. A farm system that has stalled since the class of 2006-08, which featured Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and others no longer with the team, is ...

Chicago's Jackie Robinson West team earned a berth in the 2014 Little League World Series Championship against South Korea after an improbable run through regional and double-elimination tournament play. Aug 22 2014 12:27pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Boston Red Sox landed outfielder Rusney Castillo on Friday with a record-setting contract for an international player from Cuba. The 27-year-old, who defected last December, had been weighing offers from several teams over the past few days and ultimately decided on a reported seven-year, $72.5 million deal from Boston. Castillo deal shows teams believe in Cuban talent

Aug 22 2014 11:04am CDT | Source: Sportsnet.ca

If the signings of Yasiel Puig, Jose Abreu, Aroldis Chapman and Yoenis Cespedes have shown anything it’s that there’s plenty of talent to be found in Cuba. And if another common link connects Puig ($42-million contract), Abreu ($68 million), Chapman ($27.25 million) and Cespedes ($36 million) it’s that they’re all tremendous values relative to domestic free agents. Given the talent to emerge from Cuba in recent years, it should come as no surprise that MLB teams are looking for th ...
