MLB: LA Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig Sets Four-Day Sales Record

Jun 12 2013, 2:19am CDT | by

Rookie Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers has broken the team’s four-day sales record for player merchandise over the weekend.

Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers broke the team’s four-day sales record for player merchandise over the weekend.

Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports the Dodgers sold more Puig-related merchandise from Thursday to Sunday than they had ever sold of any player over a four-day period. This beats out big-name players such as Manny Ramirez, Fernando Valenzuela or Hideo Nomo.

Hernandez reports the team sold approximately 3,000 units of Puig-related merchandise in that four-day window. These include 1,600 t-shirts ($28), 400 “Viva Puig” t-shirts ($28) and 600 jerseys ($225 for the authentic version, $110 for the replica ones).

Lon Rosen, the Dodgers’ chief marketing officer, says Puig has the ideal characteristics of a player who drives merchandise sales.

“He’s a real exciting player that drives merchandise. He’s a good-looking guy, great personality. What he does in the batter’s box, what he does on the field, he’s a five-tool player. He energizes the crowd.”

The Examiner’s Tarringo Vaughan says Puig has even filmed a television commercial with first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Rosen says the team is committed to Puig staying true to who he is as a person and as a player who is dedicated to continued growth.

“We’re not going to throw everything at him at once because that puts a lot of pressure on him. We want him to have fun playing, keep working hard, learn to deal with the media.”

Puig made his MLB debut on June 3. In nine games played for the Dodgers, he has 16 hits on a .471 average with 10 RBIs and four home runs, per ESPN stats.

Los Angeles Dodgers: An Early Free Agency and Offseason Primer

Aug 26 2014 1:12am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Hanley Ramirez clearly headlines the Los Angeles Dodgers’ approach to the offseason, but he is far from the only point of curiosity. An outfield logjam loaded with big league regulars and a top-heavy pitching staff that all of a sudden needs help only adds to the list of issues Ned Colletti must sort out before the 2015 season begins. A farm system that has stalled since the class of 2006-08, which featured Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and others no longer with the t ...

Chicago's Jackie Robinson West team earned a berth in the 2014 Little League World Series Championship against South Korea after an improbable run through regional and double-elimination tournament play. The United States representative was unable to overcome a very strong South Korean team, though, falling by a score of 8-4.    The International representative got off to a hot start, recording a run in the first inning to take a quick 1-0 le ...

Aug 22 2014 12:27pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Boston Red Sox landed outfielder Rusney Castillo on Friday with a record-setting contract for an international player from Cuba. The 27-year-old, who defected last December, had been weighing offers from several teams over the past few days and ultimately decided on a reported seven-year, $72.5 million deal from Boston. The contract will begin immediately for 2014 and run through 2020. The $72.5 million amount was quite a bit higher than expected, as Jayson Stark of ESPN.com wr ...

Castillo deal shows teams believe in Cuban talent

Aug 22 2014 11:04am CDT | Source: Sportsnet.ca

If the signings of Yasiel Puig, Jose Abreu, Aroldis Chapman and Yoenis Cespedes have shown anything it’s that there’s plenty of talent to be found in Cuba. And if another common link connects Puig ($42-million contract), Abreu ($68 million), Chapman ($27.25 million) and Cespedes ($36 million) it’s that they’re all tremendous values relative to domestic free agents. Given the talent to emerge from Cuba in recent years, it should come as no s ...
