Spurs overwhelm Heat to take 2-1 lead in NBA Finals

Jun 12 2013, 5:42am CDT | by

San Antonio, June 12 (IANS) Danny Green and Gary Neal outscored Heat "Big Three" to give San Antonio Spurs a 113-77 victory over defending champion Miami Heat, establishing 2-1 series lead in 2013 NBA Finals here on Tuesday.

San Antonio, June 12 — Danny Green and Gary Neal outscored Heat "Big Three" to give San Antonio Spurs a 113-77 victory over defending champion Miami Heat, establishing 2-1 series lead in 2013 NBA Finals here on Tuesday.

Both Green and Neal did excellent job beyond the arch. Green knocked down seven three pointers, only missing two attempts, while Neal buried six out of 10. Green scored a game high 27 points and Neal, coming from the bench, added 24. The Spurs duo combined 51 points, outscoring the 43 from the "Big Three" (16 from Dwyane Wade, 15 from LeBron James and 12 from Chris Bosh).

"Not getting down if things didn't go well, to continue to push and to work, and to Danny's credit, he's done that," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich about Danny Green, who had been cut twice during the last couple of year. Green led all players with 56 points after the first three Finals games, six more than James, Xinhua reports.

"Luckily I've been open," said Green.

"My teammates did a good job of finding me and encouraging me to shoot every time when I'm open. Pop does a great job telling us let it fly."

Tim Duncan added 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Spurs. Kawhi Leonard contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Spurs hit 16 three pointers, best in NBA Finals history, and out-rebounded the Heat 52-36.

"Well, we got what we deserved tonight," said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra.

"They got into an incredible rhythm, even in the first quarter. Every shot they wanted to get they got. We didn't disrupt them."

It seemed to be a close game when the Spurs closed the first quarter 24-20 and the first half 50-44. However, Green and Neal pulled their trigger in the second half, helping the Heat to lead for more than 20 points. The Heat saw the hope after trimming the gap to 15 points at the end of the third period, only to see the Spurs extend the advantage to 28 after opening the fourth quarter 13-0.

The 36-point margin turned out to be the third largest score difference in NBA Finals history. Heat MVP core LeBron James made only seven out of his 21 attempts throughout the game, finishing at 15 points and 11 rebounds. "I can't have a performance like tonight and expect to win," said James.

"I've got to shoot the ball better, make the better decisions and I will get into the film and see ways that I can do that."

Game 4 is a must-win game for the Heat. The top seed of the league would face early elimination if the score turns to 3-1 on Thursday night.

NBA Draft Expert's Notebook: Meet Delon Wright, the Next Big 2015 Prospect

Aug 29 2014 4:42pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Delon Wright was good last year—the kind of good that put him on NBA radars despite spending the previous two years in junior college. Wright earned scouts' attention. And this year, I'm expecting him to keep it and ultimately convert it into first-round dollars. The younger brother of 10-year NBA veteran Dorell, Delon seemingly came out of nowhere as an impact junior at Utah. He got the ...

Do the Los Angeles Lakers Owe Kobe Bryant More in His Final Chapter?

Aug 29 2014 4:42pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

As Kobe Bryant prepares for the mental, physical and emotional rides sure to follow in his 19th NBA season, it cannot be easy for him to shake one haunting question. Is this it? That's not a confrontation with mortality either. After a torn Achilles and fractured tibia have twice put him face-to-face with the game's grim reaper over the past 16 months, he knows all too well which side of his hourglass holds the most sand grains. What Bryant could (and honestly shou ...

Beginning with remarks made in a 2012 interview with Yahoo Sports' Marc J. Spears, Kevin Love has made it clear that, incendiary individual statistics aside, playing for a winner is the only thing that matters. In joining LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers, Love’s long-deferred dream finally came true, accompanied in close tow with an entirely new set of expectations: Win now, win big and win often. Still, there’s one warni ...

Pros and Cons of Los Angeles Lakers Gambling on Michael Beasley

Aug 29 2014 3:37pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

From the Miami Heat to the Minnesota Timberwolves. From the Wolves to the desert-based Phoenix Suns. From the Suns back to South Beach and the Heat.  In just six seasons, Michael Beasley has become quite the well-traveled NBA player, hopping from team to team as he attempts to jump-start his career in the Association, one that fizzled after he was selected at No. 2 in the 2008 NBA draft.  Could the Los Angeles Lakers be his next destination?  According to USA Today's Sam Amick, Beasley has ...

3 Rim Protectors Cleveland Cavaliers Should Be Pursuing

Aug 29 2014 3:00pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

With the addition of LeBron James and Kevin Love, the Cleveland Cavaliers won't need much. The offense should be one of the very best in the league, even when accounting for time to jell. There's shooting at multiple positions, talented isolation players, offensive rebounding in spades with Love and Anderson Varejao and the world's best player in James. While there isn't a whole lot that the Cavaliers don't have the potential to do, includ ...

Does all the turnover mean, they’re getting some […] The post Are These New Cleveland Cavaliers Uniforms? appeared first on Dime Magazine (dimemag.com) : Daily NBA News, NBA Trades, NBA Rumors, Basketball Vi ...
