Spurs overwhelm Heat to take 2-1 lead in NBA Finals

Jun 12 2013, 5:42am CDT | by

San Antonio, June 12 (IANS) Danny Green and Gary Neal outscored Heat "Big Three" to give San Antonio Spurs a 113-77 victory over defending champion Miami Heat, establishing 2-1 series lead in 2013 NBA Finals here on Tuesday.

San Antonio, June 12 — Danny Green and Gary Neal outscored Heat "Big Three" to give San Antonio Spurs a 113-77 victory over defending champion Miami Heat, establishing 2-1 series lead in 2013 NBA Finals here on Tuesday.

Both Green and Neal did excellent job beyond the arch. Green knocked down seven three pointers, only missing two attempts, while Neal buried six out of 10. Green scored a game high 27 points and Neal, coming from the bench, added 24. The Spurs duo combined 51 points, outscoring the 43 from the "Big Three" (16 from Dwyane Wade, 15 from LeBron James and 12 from Chris Bosh).

"Not getting down if things didn't go well, to continue to push and to work, and to Danny's credit, he's done that," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich about Danny Green, who had been cut twice during the last couple of year. Green led all players with 56 points after the first three Finals games, six more than James, Xinhua reports.

"Luckily I've been open," said Green.

"My teammates did a good job of finding me and encouraging me to shoot every time when I'm open. Pop does a great job telling us let it fly."

Tim Duncan added 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Spurs. Kawhi Leonard contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Spurs hit 16 three pointers, best in NBA Finals history, and out-rebounded the Heat 52-36.

"Well, we got what we deserved tonight," said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra.

"They got into an incredible rhythm, even in the first quarter. Every shot they wanted to get they got. We didn't disrupt them."

It seemed to be a close game when the Spurs closed the first quarter 24-20 and the first half 50-44. However, Green and Neal pulled their trigger in the second half, helping the Heat to lead for more than 20 points. The Heat saw the hope after trimming the gap to 15 points at the end of the third period, only to see the Spurs extend the advantage to 28 after opening the fourth quarter 13-0.

The 36-point margin turned out to be the third largest score difference in NBA Finals history. Heat MVP core LeBron James made only seven out of his 21 attempts throughout the game, finishing at 15 points and 11 rebounds. "I can't have a performance like tonight and expect to win," said James.

"I've got to shoot the ball better, make the better decisions and I will get into the film and see ways that I can do that."

Game 4 is a must-win game for the Heat. The top seed of the league would face early elimination if the score turns to 3-1 on Thursday night.

Early Win-Loss Predictions for Chicago Bulls Next Season

Jul 30 2014 11:25pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

With a deep roster and the return of superstar Derrick Rose, it’s not far-fetched to expect the Chicago Bulls to win a substantial amount of games over the 2014-15 season. Despite failing to land a top-tier free agent, general manager Gar Forman has assembled arguably the team’s best collection of talent since hiring Tom Thibodeau as head coach. There’s no question that the former Boston Celtics assistant is a competent strategist. In his four years at the helm in the Windy City ...

Riley: LeBron Gave 'No Response' To Texts, Emails In Free Agency

Jul 30 2014 10:59pm CDT | Source: RealGM Basketball Wiretap

Pat Riley never dissuaded from the belief that LeBron James would return to the Miami Heat in free agency, even when the two met in Las Vegas before James announced his decision to join the Cleveland Cavaliers. ''I went into it with the thought and the notion that he was coming back," Riley said, "and I was selling that to players, I believed that firmly, so I was selling that to players. And that's the only way I went into it. I let him know that. He neve ...

Derrick Rose off to Impressive Start in Make-or-Break Year for Career

Jul 30 2014 9:31pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Derrick Rose is something of an NBA myth at this point, or at least an unfortunate exercise in what could have been. It isn’t difficult to imagine the showdowns basketball fans could have been treated to in the Eastern Conference Finals between the stifling defense of a fully stocked Chicago Bulls team and the mighty Miami Heat machine had Rose stayed healthy. The one time we actually got to see it, ...

Dion Waiters: “I Have To Make Adjustments”

Jul 30 2014 8:30pm CDT | Source: dime mag

Tension in the fragile relationship between Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters almost boiled over last season. And as the Cleveland Cavaliers’ pair of ball-dominant guards readies for basketball life with LeBron James, one of them will have to take a backseat. Given Irving’s All-Star caliber, his recent $90 million extension, and natural playmaking instincts, the […] The post Dion Waiters: “I Have To Make Adjustments” appeared first on Dime Magazine (di ...

Johnny Manziel Doesn't Need to Win Starting Job at Camp to Make Impact This Year

Jul 30 2014 8:22pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Remember all the Johnny Manziel mania that swept the city of Cleveland on NFL draft day before LeBron James stole most of that northeast Ohio thunder? Well, it all could very well have been for the backup quarterback. Brian Hoyer—not Manziel—is the one impressing at Cleveland Browns camp in the early going in the signal-caller competition. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports noted as much recently: Hoye ...
