Spurs overwhelm Heat to take 2-1 lead in NBA Finals

Jun 12 2013, 5:42am CDT | by

San Antonio, June 12 (IANS) Danny Green and Gary Neal outscored Heat "Big Three" to give San Antonio Spurs a 113-77 victory over defending champion Miami Heat, establishing 2-1 series lead in 2013 NBA Finals here on Tuesday.

San Antonio, June 12 — Danny Green and Gary Neal outscored Heat "Big Three" to give San Antonio Spurs a 113-77 victory over defending champion Miami Heat, establishing 2-1 series lead in 2013 NBA Finals here on Tuesday.

Both Green and Neal did excellent job beyond the arch. Green knocked down seven three pointers, only missing two attempts, while Neal buried six out of 10. Green scored a game high 27 points and Neal, coming from the bench, added 24. The Spurs duo combined 51 points, outscoring the 43 from the "Big Three" (16 from Dwyane Wade, 15 from LeBron James and 12 from Chris Bosh).

"Not getting down if things didn't go well, to continue to push and to work, and to Danny's credit, he's done that," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich about Danny Green, who had been cut twice during the last couple of year. Green led all players with 56 points after the first three Finals games, six more than James, Xinhua reports.

"Luckily I've been open," said Green.

"My teammates did a good job of finding me and encouraging me to shoot every time when I'm open. Pop does a great job telling us let it fly."

Tim Duncan added 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Spurs. Kawhi Leonard contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Spurs hit 16 three pointers, best in NBA Finals history, and out-rebounded the Heat 52-36.

"Well, we got what we deserved tonight," said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra.

"They got into an incredible rhythm, even in the first quarter. Every shot they wanted to get they got. We didn't disrupt them."

It seemed to be a close game when the Spurs closed the first quarter 24-20 and the first half 50-44. However, Green and Neal pulled their trigger in the second half, helping the Heat to lead for more than 20 points. The Heat saw the hope after trimming the gap to 15 points at the end of the third period, only to see the Spurs extend the advantage to 28 after opening the fourth quarter 13-0.

The 36-point margin turned out to be the third largest score difference in NBA Finals history. Heat MVP core LeBron James made only seven out of his 21 attempts throughout the game, finishing at 15 points and 11 rebounds. "I can't have a performance like tonight and expect to win," said James.

"I've got to shoot the ball better, make the better decisions and I will get into the film and see ways that I can do that."

Game 4 is a must-win game for the Heat. The top seed of the league would face early elimination if the score turns to 3-1 on Thursday night.

Celebrities Visit SiriusXM Studios - May 20, 2014
There is something creepy about the sanitized verbiage basketball culture has adopted when discussing the human beings who play the sport.  The word "players" has been replaced with "assets," a clean way to describe anything from a protected lottery pick to a veteran on an expiring contract or a burgeoning young star with face-of-the-franchise talent.  Faces and names are scrubbed from the equation. Identifying characteri ...

Early Predictions for Miami Heat's Starting Lineup

Jul 24 2014 9:54pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Judging by point differential per 100 possessions, the Miami Heat had the third-best starting unit in the league last regular season, according to NBA.com statistics. In the playoffs, however, the starters went from outscoring opponents at a rate of 7.8 points per game to being outscored by 0.2 points. That can be attributed to tired legs and an offense centered around passing LeBron James the ball and getting out of the way. With the departure of James, the Heat will probably ditch ...

South Beach Battioke At Fillmore Miami Beach
During 2014 NBA free agency, a variety of league front offices were stuck between a rock and a hard place. Certain circumstances left them scrambling to execute Plans B, C and D after primary options fell through. Other teams staved off impending doom by retaining stars despite reports linking them to the contrary. The Miami Heat, for example, lost four-time MVP LeBron James to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Replacing the best player ...

The United States Celebrates The World Cup
Everybody in the NBA has something to prove. If you're a bona fide superstar, you're out to show that you belong among the best in basketball, preferably by carrying your club to a championship. If you're a rookie or the backup-to-the-backup at the end of the bench, you're trying to justify your occupation of one of the 450 jobs available in the world's best hoops league. And if you're anyone in between, well, you've probably got som ...

Have the Dallas Mavericks Won the NBA Offseason?

Op, Nina Agdal & Chandler Parsons Kick Off Spring
It's been a while since the Dallas Mavericks have escaped an offseason unscathed in the media. After years of getting spurned by big free agents and getting killed for it afterward, the Mavericks are on the opposite end of the public opinion spectrum. The narrative is no longer that the Mavericks missed out or that they're wasting the last years of Dirk Nowitzki's career. Now the Mavericks are being regard ...

San Antonio Spurs v Dallas Mavericks - Game Four
The Dallas Mavericks haven't experienced much playoff success since taking down the Miami Heat in the 2011 NBA Finals.  In fact, they've advanced to the postseason in two of the three campaigns that have come to pass since they held up the Larry O'Brien Trophy but haven't even won a single playoff series during those appearances. In 2013-14, they came quite close, taking the Sa ...

The Curious Free-Agency Cases of Greg Monroe and Eric Bledsoe

Jul 24 2014 5:23pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Detroit Pistons v Chicago Bulls
Young, productive and loaded with potential, restricted free agents Greg Monroe and Eric Bledsoe entered this summer looking poised to pull in beaucoup bucks. Yet, nearly one month into free agency, nothing has really happened on either front. The "dog days" of the NBA offseason arrived, a time typically reserved for fifth-tier signings and non-tier training camp invites. But Bledsoe and Monroe, no worse than second-tier talents ...

How Much Leverage Does LeBron James Have with Cleveland Cavaliers?

Celebrities Visit SiriusXM Studios - May 20, 2014
In his second stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron James has all the power in the world. But that might not be the case forever Clearly, LeBron pulled strings this summer. Cleveland's acquisition of James Jones and Mike Miller is proof enough of that, even if their decisions to join the Cavs had more to do with LBJ's free-agent gravity than his stated directive to pursue them. And if Ray Allen decides to lace 'em up for one more year and join the Cavaliers, we'l ...

Has Phil Jackson Given New York Knicks Enough Assets for Blockbuster Trade?

Jul 24 2014 4:01pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

New York Knicks Press Conference
Something about the New York Knicks is different.  No, it's not the famed triangle offense head coach Derek Fisher and team president Phil Jackson began implementing during summer league play. Nor is it a lingering sensation of shock stemming from the team's decision to trade into, as opposed to out of, an NBA draft. It's something else. It's hope; it's confidence that, for once, the Knicks are ...
