Italy not arrogant, says Juve star

Jun 13 2013, 2:20am CDT | by

Rio de Janeiro, June 13 (IANS) Defender Giorgio Chiellini has denied claims that Italy has been afflicted by arrogance as they prepare for their Confederations Cup debut against Mexico, Sunday.

Rio de Janeiro, June 13 — Defender Giorgio Chiellini has denied claims that Italy has been afflicted by arrogance as they prepare for their Confederations Cup debut against Mexico, Sunday.

Veteran Azzurri goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had accused his teammates of having an "ounce of superficiality and arrogance" during the match against Caribbean minnows Haiti, reports Xinhua.

Buffon made the suggestion following Italy's shock 2-2 friendly draw with Haiti in Rio de Janeiro, Tuesday.

"Buffon is our captain and leader. We respect everything he says but maybe he made those comments in the heat of the moment," Buffon's Juventus teammate Chiellini said on Wednesday.

"We know what we are capable of and we have complete confidence in our team. It's our job now to make sure that we recover and are ready for Sunday's match."

Italy's clash at the Maracana stadium Sunday will be followed by duels against Japan June 19 and hosts Brazil three days later. The top two teams from each group will play off for a place in the final June 30.

Jul 16 2014 12:09pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The 2018 World Cup set to take place in Russia may seem ages away, but the thoughts of some nations are already turning toward that tournament following a poor showing at Brazil 2014. Germany's triumph in Brazil has been credited to a forward-thinking plan that was put in place over a decade ago. Oliver Holt, writing for the Mirror, quoted German national coach Joachim Low as saying after the final: “We realised more than 10 years ago that ...

World Cup winners list: A complete history

Jul 14 2014 1:13pm CDT | Source: SBNation

Only 8 of the 77 teams to participate in a World Cup have ever lifted the trophy. How unfair! In 1930, thirteen teams participated in the first World Cup held in Uruguay. Since then, the countries of the world have come together every four years (except in the 1940's-yes Germany, looking at you here) to play in the tournament, with 77 countries having participated in 20 tournaments as of 2014. Despite, the large number of count ...

Why Italy Are Dark Horses to Win the World Cup

Jun 16 2014 12:18am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

After all, the term "dark horse" is usually given to teams with little experience in the tournament yet lots of young talent: think Belgium and Colombia. Yet, there wasn't much talk about Italy going into this World Cup.  As hosts, Brazil have been immediately labelled the favorites— ...
