ESPN cites sources in its June 13 update which says Rivers is highly intrigued by the possibility of him coaching the Clippers after nine seasons and one championship with Boston in the event he parts ways with the Celtics. The Clippers would instantly put Rivers at the top of their list of coaching prospects which include Brian Shaw, Byron Scott and Lionel Hollins should the possibility come up.
CBS Sports' Matt Moore says the Celtics would want significant compensation from any team that hires Rivers as he is still reportely has three years and $21 million left in his contract which he re-signed over the summer.
"[Doc] has been pretty open that he doesn't want to coach in a rebuilding environment. And if they don't make some moves, they're not going to have a rebuilding environment. That's Danny's challenge.
Berger says Ainge agrees with Rivers that a rebuilding situation isn't ideal for the Celtics. However, an aging core and a payroll "is pushing up against the dreaded luxury-tax apron" limits Boston's options.
If the Celtics do rebuild, Rivers may find himself going for the Clippers' coaching vacancy as ESPN's Chris Brouchard cited a source on Wednesday who said the Boston coach feels it's time for a change.
"Doc loves coaching. He loves coaching in Boston. But he feels it may be time for a change."
NBC Sports' Dan Feldman says "The Celtics are within their legal and ethical rights to block Rivers from defecting to the Clippers. Rivers is also well within his rights to explore with the Celtics a move to Los Angeles.
