NBA: Doc Rivers and LA Clippers Reportedly Have Mutual Interest

Jun 13 2013, 11:00pm CDT | by

Boston Celtics head coach Glenn "Doc" Rivers and the Los Angeles Clippers reportedly have a strong mutual interest, according to several sources.

Boston head coach Doc Rivers and the Los Angeles Clippers reportedly have a strong mutual interest, according to several sources.

ESPN cites sources in its June 13 update which says Rivers is highly intrigued by the possibility of him coaching the Clippers after nine seasons and one championship with Boston in the event he parts ways with the Celtics. The Clippers would instantly put Rivers at the top of their list of coaching prospects which include Brian Shaw, Byron Scott and Lionel Hollins should the possibility come up.

CBS Sports' Matt Moore says the Celtics would want significant compensation from any team that hires Rivers as he is still reportely has three years and $21 million left in his contract which he re-signed over the summer

Moore also reports via his colleague Ken Berger and his sources that Rivers does not want to be involved in any potential rebuilding situation.

"[Doc] has been pretty open that he doesn't want to coach in a rebuilding environment. And if they don't make some moves, they're not going to have a rebuilding environment. That's Danny's challenge.

Berger says Ainge agrees with Rivers that a rebuilding situation isn't ideal for the Celtics. However, an aging core and a payroll "is pushing up against the dreaded luxury-tax apron" limits Boston's options.

If the Celtics do rebuild, Rivers may find himself going for the Clippers' coaching vacancy as ESPN's Chris Brouchard cited a source on Wednesday who said the Boston coach feels it's time for a change.

"Doc loves coaching. He loves coaching in Boston. But he feels it may be time for a change."

NBC Sports' Dan Feldman says "The Celtics are within their legal and ethical rights to block Rivers from defecting to the Clippers. Rivers is also well within his rights to explore with the Celtics a move to Los Angeles.

The NBA universe will now await Doc Rivers' next move.

Why Donald Sterling can't appeal the sale of the Clippers

Jul 28 2014 8:26pm CDT | Source: SBNation

With the approval of code 1310(b), Shelly Sterling's sale of the Clippers to Steve Ballmer will have no more roadblocks. In the most difficult decision in the courtroom saga between the husband-and-wife duo of Donald and Shelly Sterling, the case's biggest impact was the judge's decision to approve Shelly's request for the court to utilize Section 1310(b) of California probate cod ...

Fully Rebuilt Dallas Mavericks Still Fly or Fall with Dirk Nowitzki

Jul 25 2014 7:13pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Dallas Mavericks have been arguably the NBA's busiest team this offseason. They started off the league's silly season in June when they traded for Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton, kept it going in full force in July by prying Chandler Parsons from the Houston Rockets for a substantial sum (three years, $46 million) and have since capped things off by filling out the roster with the likes of Jameer Nelson, Richard Jefferson and Al-Farouq Amin ...

Jul 25 2014 11:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

With August just around the corner, the Los Angeles Lakers still haven't hired a head coach. Pardon the world for speculating, but it certainly doesn't appear that the team is ecstatic about hiring former player Byron Scott to fill the void. Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders believes contract length may be the sticking point. For weeks, it has appeared as though the Lakers could make Scott's hiring official, but for wha ...

Chris Paul Confirms: There May Be A Clippers Boycott Next Year

Jul 25 2014 10:31am CDT | Source: SportsGrid

We first heard about the possibility of members of the Clippers leaving the team altogether from the team’s interim CEO. Dick Parsons said Doc Rivers has considered not returning L.A. if Donald Sterling is still the owner by the start of next season — and that his exit could lead to exits by the players as well. We’ve been talking about the idea of Clippers players finding new NBA teams, mostly in jest, because there’s no way the entire Clippers franchise ...

Lakers Rumors: Latest Buzz Involving Ongoing Head Coaching Search

Jul 25 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Los Angeles Lakers really need to hire a head coach. This offseason should be considered critical for this franchise due to a healthy Kobe Bryant, a new-look roster and some great rookie talent following a disastrous 2013 season. If this team is to complete its bounce-back bid, a coach must be in the fold. Los Angeles has been taking its sweet time looking for its replacement for Mike D'Antoni. That was alright in the early stages of the offseason, as plenty of options were ou ...

Chris Paul: Clippers May Boycott if Donald Sterling Isn’t Removed

Jul 25 2014 8:45am CDT | Source: slamonline

LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling was banned for life by NBA commissioner Adam Silver, thereby stamping out talk of a player boycott during the NBA Playoffs last season. According to All-Star point guard and NBA Players Association president Chris Paul, so long as Sterling hasn’t been completely stripped of his ownership, the idea of sitting out games isn’t quite dead. CP3 says that Clippers players and coaches are discussing the possibility with the season about two months away from start ...

Is Ray Allen the One Veteran Cleveland Cavaliers Still Really Need?

Jul 24 2014 9:33am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

When LeBron James took his talents back to the Cleveland Cavaliers, he joined a team that was high on potential, but short on veteran experience and three-point shooting. Ray Allen could relieve both itches with a single scratch, an act he'd surely execute with picturesque form and flawless footwork. After spending the past two seasons with James in South Beach, the 39-year-old sharpshooter is reportedly considering following James' lead to ...
