Blatter tells Brazilian fans to respect their president

Jun 16 2013, 1:41am CDT | by

Brasilia, June 16 (IANS) FIFA president Sepp Blatter urged fans to show more respect after Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was roundly booed before the opening Confederations Cup match between Brazil and Japan.

Brasilia, June 16 — FIFA president Sepp Blatter urged fans to show more respect after Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was roundly booed before the opening Confederations Cup match between Brazil and Japan.

The crowd of almost 70,000 fans at Mane Garrincha Stadium showed their disapproval Saturday when Rousseff's name was read out by Blatter during a speech to officially inaugurate the tournament, reports Xinhua.

"Brazilian football fans, where is the respect and fair play, please?" Blatter had said.

Rousseff's popularity has tumbled in recent weeks amid rising inflation and concerns that billions of dollars of public money is being spent on World Cup and Olympic projects instead of essential public services.

Anger escalated this week amid mass protests in the cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro against higher public transport fares.

Argentina forward Lionel Messi continued a surprising trend over the weekend, becoming the fifth consecutive winner of the World Cup's Golden Ball who did not come from the tournament-winning side, per ESPN's Paul Carr. The prize was little consolation for Messi, who played an excellent tournament on the whole but failed to make his mark on Sunday's final. Recife - Venues for FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013
After three World Cups, Lionel Messi has yet to lift the biggest prize in world soccer. He's on Pele and Diego Maradona's level anyway. With Argentina trailing Germany in the 120th minute of the World Cup final, Lionel Messi drew a foul on the edge of the penalty area. He had a chance to score the latest goal in the tournament's history, send the match to penalties and end any d ...

Will Germany become the new Spain?

Jul 13 2014 7:12pm CDT | Source: Sportsnet.ca

Sepp Blatter Meets Mahmoud Abbas In West Bank
Even if Sepp Blatter wasn’t booed mercilessly by an entire stadium (and likely hundreds of millions of TV viewers worldwide), I still would have been very happy with Sunday’s World Cup final and how things played out between Germany and Argentina. Some random thoughts… • It really was a World Cup featuring possession vs. the counter attack—and that is how the final unfolded, with Argentina happy to secede possession ...
