Fenerbahce to submit 'match-fixing' defence to UEFA

Jun 20 2013, 6:10am CDT | by

Ankara, June 20 (IANS) Turkish football club Fenerbahce will submit its defence on match-fixing charges at the House of European Football in Nyo Thursday.

Ankara, June 20 — Turkish football club Fenerbahce will submit its defence on match-fixing charges at the House of European Football in Nyo Thursday.

In its defence, Fenerbahce will argue against being punished for the same crime twice and inconsistencies in UEFA's treatment of the club, reports Xinhua.

The Istanbul-based team was summoned by the Control and Disciplinary Body of UEFA June 10 regarding charges first leveled against the club at the end of the 2010-11 season. Also summoned by European football's governing body were fellow Istanbul team Besiktas and FC Steaua Bucharest of Romania.

"The UEFA disciplinary inspector has submitted his findings to the Control and Disciplinary Body, in the context of disciplinary proceedings against this club and five club officials," read a statement on UEFA's website.

The findings will be presented Saturday, June 22, and the results will be announced within the following week.

Earlier in the year, Europol announced its findings involving a vast criminal rigging and betting organisation that fixed matches in top football matches around the world. Turkey has struggled with the distinction of having the most rigged matches in the Europol investigation.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has found himself in a middle of a storm after resting no less than eight of his first team regulars for the Reds’ glamour UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid last night. Although the so-called reserve team acquitted themselves very well by only suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the all conquering Madrid, Rodgers was vehemently criticized by many for throwing in the towel even before the match had begun.  Rodgers under a lot of ...

Rogers' team selection vs Madrid

Nov 5 2014 1:17am CST | Source: RedCafe

(Balls to mega-threads) What I can't work out is whether or not rolling over and showing LFC's belly to Madrid was unprecedented or not? I know other teams (including United) have fielded weakened teams in dead rubber games but has any manager ever - in the history of the CL - fielded an under-strength team in such a big game, with qualification still in doubt? Also, will he be punished by UEFA for breaking one of the co ...
