The Boston Celtics could have unrestricted free agent Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith on board.

CBS Boston reports should the Celtics trade Paul Pierce and receive a trade exception in return, they already have a sign-and-trade package ready to offer the Atlanta Hawks for Smith.

The Celtics have until June 30 to decide if they want to pick up Pierce's option, buy him out for $5 million, or trade him. Since the Celtics are over the salary cap, they would need to acquire a trade exception in any trade of Pierce in order for the sign-and-trade for Smith to materialize.

CBS Boston also adds the Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks have shown interest in Pierce, who said he prefers to play for a contender. Any team over the salary cap would not be able to take on Pierce's contract without sending a player back with a matching salary.

Lauren Moranor of Sports World Report writes the Hawks have been looking to get rid of Smith and his history with the Celtics would potentially make for a good fit. Smith joined the Celtics in Los Angeles last summer for pre-season workouts because he is friends with Rajon Rondo.

Moranor also observes Smith has shown flashes of greatness but has yet to help lead a team to real success. He, however, could thrive if paired with a point guard like Rondo.

As early as February, the Celtics have shown interest in the high-flying Smith. Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times said "Boston is salivating over Atlanta forward Josh Smith and would be receptive to unloading Brandon Bass and Jeff Green to obtain him."

Smith averaged 17.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 76 games with the Hawks in the 2012-13 NBA season, per ESPN stats
