Spain beat Italy on penalties to reach final

Jun 28 2013, 4:12am CDT | by

Fortaleza, June 28 (IANS) Spain earned a place in the Confederations Cup final against Brazil with a dramatic 7-6 penalty-shootout victory over Italy here.

Fortaleza, June 28 — Spain earned a place in the Confederations Cup final against Brazil with a dramatic 7-6 penalty-shootout victory over Italy here.

Newly signed Manchester City winger Jesus Navas converted the winning spot-kick after Juventus winger Leonardo Bonucci sent his attempt over the bar at the Castelao Stadium Thursday night, reports Xinhua.

Both sides netted each of their first six penalty attempts after the scores were tied 0-0 at the end of extra-time. Sunday's final at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium will be the first match between Spain and Brazil since November 1999, when the sides drew 0-0 in Vigo.

"It was a really difficult match and in the end it was a lottery. They really took their penalties well and we were lucky. We are tired and have to rest now to get ourselves ready for Sunday. We know that it's not going to be easy playing against Brazil at the Maracana in front of thousands of their fans but we are ready," Spain captain Iker Casillas said.

As expected, Casillas began in goal for Spain after coach Vicente del Bosque rotated the keepers' role during the group phase. And the 2010 World Cup-winning skipper made an immediate impact as Italy took the initiative. He twice saved headers from Napoli defender Christian Maggio before fisting away a powerful Daniele De Rossi shot.

Spain's best chance of the first half came when Xavi's delicate touch released Fernando Torres, who spun around his marker before firing his shot wide. Both sides appeared to labour in the second half as the sapping tropical heat took its toll. But it was Spain who looked most likely to score as del Bosque's side began to find gaps in the Azzurri defence with their signature short passing game.

Andres Iniesta twice tried his luck from distance while second-half substitute Juan Mata failed to make clean contact after a Torres header. Emanuele Giaccherini then came within inches of putting his team ahead in extra time when he thumped a 25m shot against the post.

Minutes later it was Spain's turn to be denied by the woodwork when Xavi's swerving shot was palmed against the upright by Gianluigi Buffon.

Aug 30 2014 12:33pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

MANCHESTER—Etihad Stadium For much of the final 20 minutes of this match, Stoke had all 11 players camped in their own defensive third. Manchester City, desperately committing men forward, tried everything to break through the sea of red and white in front of them and maintain their excellent start to the Premier League season. But with the creativity and inventiveness that has become the hallmark of their play under Manuel Pellegrini deserting ...

Manchester City vs. Stoke: Final score 0-1, Potters earn shock win

Aug 30 2014 10:53am CDT | Source: SBNation

Visiting teams don't win at the Etihad. Especially not visiting teams like Stoke City. But Manchester City's first loss of the season does indeed come at home, and it does indeed come at the hands of former boss Mark Hughes and his rather industrious side. It's a shock result for the defending champions, who only lost one Premier League match on home turf last season, and it means a very early shakeup in the ti ...

Liverpool Must Not Panic-Buy in Transfer Window After Manchester City Defeat

Aug 26 2014 7:27am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Liverpool's 3-1 defeat to Manchester City wasn't the perfect, confidence-boosting start to his side's away campaign Brendan Rodgers had hoped for, but it was far from disastrous. In an age in which every man and his dog have their two cents on the performances of professional sportspeople within seconds of the action, fans can easily panic. A weak header from Dejan Lovren followed by a slow reaction to clear the ball by new signing Albert ...

Stevan Jovetic's Form Gives Manchester City Leg Up in Premier League Title Chase

Aug 25 2014 6:58pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Manchester City continued their excellent start to the new Premier League campaign on Monday. A 3-1 win over the team they pipped to last season's title, Liverpool, leaves them as one of just four teams—alongside Tottenham, Chelsea and Swansea—to win each of their first two matches. A brace from Stevan Jovetic sent City on their way before Sergio Aguero blasted home a third less than half a minute after emerging off the bench. An unfortunate own goal that ...

Manchester City vs. Liverpool: Final score 3-1, Stevan Jovetic the star

Aug 25 2014 3:53pm CDT | Source: SBNation

Manchester City are setting the pace at the top of the Premier League, and in impressive fashion. They were clearly the better side in their 3-1 win over Liverpool on Monday, taking their chances with fantastic precision. The first half was rather uneventful, though not devoid of quality. Both teams passed the ball around well and got into dangerous areas, but the defending was of an equally high standard, and chances didn ...
