Spain beat Italy on penalties to reach final

Jun 28 2013, 4:12am CDT | by

Fortaleza, June 28 (IANS) Spain earned a place in the Confederations Cup final against Brazil with a dramatic 7-6 penalty-shootout victory over Italy here.

Fortaleza, June 28 — Spain earned a place in the Confederations Cup final against Brazil with a dramatic 7-6 penalty-shootout victory over Italy here.

Newly signed Manchester City winger Jesus Navas converted the winning spot-kick after Juventus winger Leonardo Bonucci sent his attempt over the bar at the Castelao Stadium Thursday night, reports Xinhua.

Both sides netted each of their first six penalty attempts after the scores were tied 0-0 at the end of extra-time. Sunday's final at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium will be the first match between Spain and Brazil since November 1999, when the sides drew 0-0 in Vigo.

"It was a really difficult match and in the end it was a lottery. They really took their penalties well and we were lucky. We are tired and have to rest now to get ourselves ready for Sunday. We know that it's not going to be easy playing against Brazil at the Maracana in front of thousands of their fans but we are ready," Spain captain Iker Casillas said.

As expected, Casillas began in goal for Spain after coach Vicente del Bosque rotated the keepers' role during the group phase. And the 2010 World Cup-winning skipper made an immediate impact as Italy took the initiative. He twice saved headers from Napoli defender Christian Maggio before fisting away a powerful Daniele De Rossi shot.

Spain's best chance of the first half came when Xavi's delicate touch released Fernando Torres, who spun around his marker before firing his shot wide. Both sides appeared to labour in the second half as the sapping tropical heat took its toll. But it was Spain who looked most likely to score as del Bosque's side began to find gaps in the Azzurri defence with their signature short passing game.

Andres Iniesta twice tried his luck from distance while second-half substitute Juan Mata failed to make clean contact after a Torres header. Emanuele Giaccherini then came within inches of putting his team ahead in extra time when he thumped a 25m shot against the post.

Minutes later it was Spain's turn to be denied by the woodwork when Xavi's swerving shot was palmed against the upright by Gianluigi Buffon.

David Silva's Absence Key in City's Manchester Derby Wobble

Nov 3 2014 3:48am CST | Source: Bleacher Report

One would think that a victory over their most hated rivals would be a cause for great celebration for Manchester City. And not just a victory—their fourth successive win over Manchester United, the first time since 1955 they have achieved that feat, and the first time ever they have managed such a run in the league. However, such are the reversed expectations in Manchester now that United will almost be the more pleased of the teams after the game, having caused City a numbe ...

Both teams enjoyed a decent spell of possession without posing too many threats in front of goal but it was City who had the better chances. PIC: ...

Aguero clinches Man City derby win over United

Nov 2 2014 9:41am CST | Source: Sportsnet.ca

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City maintained its supremacy over fierce rival Manchester United in unconvincing style on Sunday, winning a frenetic derby 1-0 through Sergio Aguero’s second-half goal after playing with an extra man for more than half the game. Man City vs. Man United: Score, Grades and Reaction from Manchester Derby

Nov 2 2014 9:40am CST | Source: Bleacher Report

Sergio Aguero’s second-half strike was the difference as Manchester City beat 10-man Manchester United 1-0 on Sunday in a game they could, and perhaps should, have won by a bigger margin. United were struggling to cope with City’s attacking intent at the Etihad Stadium even before Chris Smalling was dismissed for a second stupid challenge five minutes before half-time. Yet it took until the hour mark for City to finally break the deadlock, as Aguero ...

Why Sergio Aguero Will Be Manchester City's Key Player Against Manchester United

Oct 31 2014 12:15am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Sergio Aguero will be Manchester City's key player in this weekend's derby with Manchester United because Aguero is the only City player, save for Yaya Toure, who can create a goal from nothing. With Toure creating far more nothing than goals, Aguero will have to conjure some special magic to carry City's offense against the Red Devils. Especially since City boss Manuel Pellegrini set fire to his ow ...
