We are as good as Spain, says Italy coach

Fortaleza (Brazil), June 28 — Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said his team had proved they were on par with Spain after a 6-7 penalty shootout loss to the World Champions here.

The Confederations Cup semifinal defeat Thursday came almost a year after Spain routed the Azzurri 4-0 in the Euro 2012 final, reports Xinhua.

"It is clear that there is no longer a gap between the teams. I am proud of my players. Today we showed Italy's soul. We haven't always been able to play this way and it's important now that we maintain this form. We will leave the tournament knowing that we can have great results in the future," Prandelli said.

Italy will Sunday play off for third place against Uruguay in Salvador. Prandelli criticised the tournament's fixturing saying his team would not have enough time to recover.

"I think the schedule needs to be revised. I don't even know if we are going to train before the match against Uruguay. We have a day less to prepare and then a long trip ahead," Prandelli said.

Sneijder relieved to avoid Liverpool’s Balotelli

Sep 20 2014 8:53am CDT | Source: forzitalianfootball

Galatasaray and ex-Inter star Wesley Sneijder says he is relieved not to be facing Liverpool and Mario Balotelli in the Champions League group stage. The Dutch playmaker was teammates with Balotelli during their time at Inter, in which they won many trophies together, and Sneijder is aware of the talent Balotelli possesses.  ”For us it is better that he does not play so he can’t score against us,” Sneijder said to Turkish Football. “Nevertheless, I regret th ...

Giuseppe Rossi: A career that could have been

Sep 16 2014 5:34am CDT | Source: forzitalianfootball

Football can be a cruel sport at times, and Giuseppe Rossi knows this too well. The 27-year-old has been savaged by injury for much of his career, and has prevented him from perhaps becoming a household name in world football. You could forgive Rossi for throwing in the towel and losing faith in football after his recent setback, ruled out for at least five months following an injury to his knee meniscus. This latest injury to the Italian follows a wretched run of serious injuries d ...

Galatasaray vs. Anderlecht, 2014 UEFA Champions League: Team news and game preview

Sep 16 2014 2:00am CDT | Source: SBNation

The two sides likely battling for third place in Group D open their campaigns with a key match. For the neutral football fan, there's probably not much appeal to Tuesday's Group D match between Galatasaray and Anderlecht. For fans of the two clubs, it's a massive match because these two teams are expected to be battling for third place in the group. That position would allow their team to continue European play in the Eu ...

Mattia Destro Must Take His Chance to Remind Roma Just How Good He Can Be

Sep 12 2014 12:12am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

This has been a summer of highs and lows for Mattia Destro. It began with the player being selected for Cesare Prandelli’s 30-man Italy squad ahead of the World Cup, only to eventually miss out on a place in the final 23. It continued with him being linked to a lucrative Premier League move, only to instead start the season as an unused substitute in Roma’s win over Fiorentina.  That is not to suggest that the striker was sad to stay with the Giallorossi. Des ...

Simone Zaza: The man who replaced Mario Balotelli

Sep 10 2014 9:13am CDT | Source: forzitalianfootball

Enigmatic striker Mario Balotelli has unsurprisingly become the scapegoat after Italy’s early elimination from the 2014 World Cup. Antonio Conte’s predecessor, Cesare Prandelli, relied on ‘Super Mario’ to be a prolific finisher for the Azzurri, a task which Balotelli overall failed to accomplish on the world stage. Conte did not call-up Balotelli for the matches against the Netherlands and Norway in the latest international break, giving the opportunity to other ...
