ESPN's Marc Stein cites knowledgeable sources when he wrote about the trade on July 4. The package would have Evans moving to New Orleans in a sign-and-trade, New Orleans guard Greivis Vasquez transferring to Sacramento and New Orleans center Robin Lopez going to Portland.
In addition, the Blazers will send 2013 second-round pick Jeff Withey to the Pelicans and two future second-round picks to the Kings. In return, Portland will acquire New Orleans guard Terrel Harris as well. Stein adds the trade can only be completed on July 10.
USA Today Sports' Sam Amick notes the acquisition of former Philadelphia 76er All-Star guard Jrue Holiday via a draft day trade made Vasquez expendable. Vasquez's impedning departure may also mean Eric Gordon staying in New Orleans, per Amick.
Scooby Axson of Sports Illustrated adds the deal sprang to life when free agent point guard Jose Calderon declined an offer to play for the Kings. His agent, Mark Bartelstein, said the timing wasn't right.
"They showed him a great vision, made a great offer, but the timing wasn't right."
Evans, a restricted free agent, reportedly agreed to a four-year, $44 million deal with the Pelicans on Wednesday. He averaged 18 points, five rebounds and four assists with the Kings last season.
Vasquez chipped in with 13.9 points, nine assists and 4.3 rebounds per game with the then-Hornets in 2012-13. Lopez contributed 11.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 1.6 blocks per outing with New Orleans a season ago.
