Former Butler Bulldogs point guard Brandon Miller will now coach at his alma mater.

Butler University officially appointed Miller as the men's basketball team's new head coach on Saturday, as reported on the school's official website. He will take over the post vacated by Brad Stevens, who was hired to coach the Boston Celtics.

Vice President and Director of Athletics Barry Collier said he is confident Miller will carry on the Butler tradition of excellence.

"I am confident that Brandon will carry on the Butler University basketball tradition of excellence, especially as we make the transition to the Big East Athletic Conference. As a player, assistant coach and person, Brandon has exemplified the Butler Way and brings a blend of energy, talent and integrity to this role. With Brandon's leadership, Butler is well positioned to expand upon the success of the last few years."

Collier is Miller's former coach with the Bulldogs. The newly-hired head coach told USA Today Sports he was thrilled at the opportunity, as has always been his dream to be a head coach.

"I was thrilled. It was a dream of mine to become a head coach, and to be able to become a head coach and your alma mater. It's Butler University, and with everything going on here with joining the new Big East...there's excitement."

Stevens reached an agreement last Wednesday to coach the Celtics for a six-year deal reportedly worth $22 million.

Miller was an assistant for six years at Ohio State under Thad Matta and one season at Illinois under John Groce. He worked as an assistant coach under Stevens at Butler in the 2007-08 season.

As a Butler Bulldog, Miller ranked among the university's all-time leaders in points (1,121), three-point field goals (189) and assists (305).

His hiring coincides with Butler University's first season in the Big East. The school bolsters the conference's 10-university lineup which also includes fellow new additions Creighton and Xavier.
