Lt. Chris Van Brackel of the Lexington Police Department said the brothers were charged with possession of a controlled substance at 12:45 a.m. on July 6. Van Brackel couldn't provide more information about the incident although a report from Tallahassee.com confirms the two weren't arrested.
Kentucky athletics department spokesman Tony Neely affirmed the dismissal although he did not specify the infraction, per the Associated Press.
"I just learned of the situation of Kadeem and Khalid and I am just stunned. We are certainly behind them and will try to help support them through this situation."
Pancho Thomas, a sophomore linebacker, recorded 12 tackles in 10 games while backing up senior Avery Williamson. He also saw action on special teams.
His younger brother Khalid is a freshman running back who helped Godby High win the class 5A state championship. He was also named All-Big Bend Co-Player of the Year last fall. He had 1,471 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.
According to the Wildcats' SB Nation football site, the dismissal of the Thomas brothers is the latest in a string of depatures from the team which began with cornerbacks Jonathan Reed and Marcus Caffey being dismissed themselves in January. Running back Justin Taylor transferred two months ago while five players followed suit last month.
The Wildcats finished just 2-10 in the 2012 NCAA season, finishing dead last in the SEC East.
