The New York Islanders signed center Josh Bailey to a five-year deal on Monday.

ESPN New York reports the deal to be worth $16.5 million, per a source with knowledge of the situation. Islanders general manager Garth Snow says Bailey is part of a young core which will ensure the team's status as perennial playoff contenders.

"Josh has become an important member of the young core of the players we have in our dressing room. We're excited to come to terms with him on a deal that will ensure he is a member of this team as we solidify ourselves as consistent playoff contenders."

USA Today Sports' Jimmy Hascup confirms Bailey's new deal buys out his first three years of unrestricted free agency.

The 23-year-old center and Ontario native tallied 30 points on 11 goals and 19 assists in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 NHL season. The ninth-overall selection of the 2008 NHL Draft, Bailey has career numbers of 58 goals and 81 assists in 329 career games with the Islanders.
