Ernie Els made honorary member of Asian Tour

Jul 16 2013, 3:47am CDT | by

Muirfield (Scotland), July 16 (IANS) Ernie Els, a four-time Major champion and a World Golf Hall of Famer, has accepted an invitation to become an honorary member and international ambassador of the Asian Tour.

Muirfield (Scotland), July 16 — Ernie Els, a four-time Major champion and a World Golf Hall of Famer, has accepted an invitation to become an honorary member and international ambassador of the Asian Tour.

The South African star, who will defend his Open Championship title at Muirfield this week, said he was delighted to receive the recognition from Asia's premier Tour which is celebrating its milestone 10th season as a players' organisation this year.

"It is a great honour for me to receive an honorary membership from the Asian Tour. This is absolutely wonderful. I've played in Asia for many, many years and for them to do that, to basically be their international ambassador as well, is something which I will take seriously," said Els.

A former world number one, Els has been a huge supporter of the Asian Tour where he has featured in a total of 26 tournaments across the region dating back from 2004 when the Tour was established by the players. He has an impressive record with two victories and 16 other top-10s in those appearances across the region.

This season, the 43-year-old, who has 70 professional victories worldwide including the recent BMW International Open in Munich, featured in two Asian Tour tournaments where he finished tied 14th at the inaugural Chiangmai Golf Classic in Thailand and runner-up at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters.

"I've played in Asia twice already this year. I've played over there since I've been a professional golfer. I've seen a lot of the players coming through. Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee, you know, he's my age, and he's played his whole career with a lot of success and to also see the youngsters coming through from the Asian Tour is wonderful," said Els, who is nicknamed the "Big Easy".

Els will join Fiji's Vijay Singh, Jeev Milkha Singh of India and Korean duo Y.E. Yang and K.J. Choi as honorary members of the Asian Tour.

Hunt: Advanced break down of Tiger’s stats under Harmon, Haney and Foley

Sep 4 2014 9:58am CDT | Source: GolfWRX

Last week Tiger Woods announced that he was parting ways with instructor Sean Foley. I wanted to examine Tiger’s game over the course of his professional career to get a better understanding of what was going on and what may have caused him to change swing coaches over the years. Please bear with me as many of the key metrics listed below were not available during these years. Nonetheless, we can still get a pretty good idea of Tiger’s game during the But ...

Rory McIlroy: Is Grand Slam Next? His Golf Plan for Rest of Season and 2015

Aug 12 2014 10:49pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Let's see. Rory McIlroy has already won the U.S. Open, The British Open and two PGA Championships. That's three-fourths of a Grand Slam. What else could Rory McIlroy possibly want in golf? "To be one ( major championship) behind Phil, one behind Seve, level with Ernie, level with Raymond Floyd, I mean, I never thought I'd get this far at 25 years of age," McIlroy said after his victory. "I was happy being a two‑time ma ...

McIlroy wins PGA Championship for back-to-back major victories

Aug 10 2014 6:31pm CDT | Source: GolfWRX

The PGA of America must be smiling broadly. It produced the intriguing, unexpected tournament denouement that the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship wish they might have offered in 2014. Understand that Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy turned in wonderful performances to claim major championships in 2014; the only knock is that they did it (for the most part) in Secretariat fashi ...

PGA Championship 2014: How to View Live Leaderboard Scores, Updates on Day 2

Aug 8 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

After the allure of Wednesday was over, Tiger Woods made his return in Valhalla Golf Club on Day 1 of the 2014 PGA Championship. Unfortunately, it was much of the same from Woods, as his inconsistencies became one of the many headlines on Thursday. While Woods struggled to finish at three-over 74 on Day 1, several other golfers rose to the occasion to stand atop the leaderboard. One of the early leaders was Kevin Chappell, who comes in as the No. 71 gol ...

LET THEM HAVE COKE: 6 Reasons Why Cocaine (And Other Drugs) Should Be Legal On The PGA Tour

Aug 1 2014 2:27pm CDT | Source: SportsGrid

Paulina Gretzky’s husband and apparently a professional golfer, Dustin Johnson, tested positive for cocaine in a recent tour mandated drug test. Do we have to now boo him in a subdued, courteous manner? [very tame noise of golf jeers fills the gallery] If you’re anything like me, the news that a guy used cocaine on a professional golf tour is hardly interesting/news at all. First off, he’s dating a ...
