MLB: Mets Pitcher Matt Harvey 'Embarrassed' By Men's Journal Article

Jul 22 2013, 2:17am CDT | by

New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey says he is "embarrassed" by a Men's Journal article which claims he admires New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter and his penchant for dating beautiful women.

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey says he is "embarrassed" by a recent Men's Journal article which has him talking about New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter's love life.

A CBS New York report dated July 18 says Harvey "sounded like a guy who wanted to be seen as the standard for dating, fashion and just about, well, everything else" in reference to the Men's Journal piece which says Harvey looks up to Jeter in terms of the women he's dated and how he's kept this life aspect a secret.

"That guy is the model. I mean, first off, let's just look at the women he'd dated. Obviously, he goes out - he's meeting these girls somewhere - but you never hear about it. That's where I want to be."

Harvey, a Connecticut native, also professed his love for New York City in the article by saying,"Man, do I f------ love this city."

However, the 24-year-old pitching ace shed some light on his Men's Journal comments when he spoke with the New York Times' Andrew Keh, saying they are not an accurate depiction of his true persona.

Keh tweeted Harvey's sentiments on the matter on July 22.

"Matt Harvey:'I read the articles and obviously was embarrassed by it. The way I was portrayed is not who I am and not the person I am.'"

Harvey then said he wanted "to deal with it on the field," according to Newsday's Marc Carig via Sports Illustrated. This is supplemented by an ESPN New York blog from Adam Rubin dated July 21 which has Mets manager Terry Collins saying Harvey played with "a little anger" in their 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field on Sunday.

"I think Matt was  on a little bit of a mission today to silence all the other stuff that's going on and let everybody know he's here to pitch and he's here to play baseball. I think today he went out there with a little anger."

Harvey, who is 8-2 in 2013 with a 2.23 ERA, posed nude in ESPN the Magazine's "The Body" issue.

This season in Triple-A, as he waits for his call to the Mets, the team’s top pitching prospect, Noah Syndergaard, is 9-7 with a 4.67 ERA in 25 starts. “Me and Harvey both said, being down there [after awhile] you get bored,’’ Wheeler told Kevin Kernan, when ...

Mets still debating whether to add Syndergaard in Sept.

Aug 27 2014 9:20am CDT | Source: mets blog

The Mets have still not decided whether to add RHP prospect Noah Syndergaard to their 40-man roster and promote him in September, Sandy Alderson said before Tuesday’s game. Alderson said Syndergaard could benefit from being around the team, and seeing the big leagues, even if he only makes an occasional in-game appearance. However, he added, “We don’t have 40-man roster spots readily available for everybody we potentially want to see in September.” The te ...

Aug 26 2014 8:54am CDT | Source: mets blog

Bartolo Colon cleared waivers (Fox Sports, August 25), meaning he can now be traded to any team. The Angels, Dodgers and Royals are expected to have the most interest in acquiring him, an AL executive told reporter Andy Martino (Daily News, Aug. 25). “The Angels will be all over him,” the executive said. “They don’t have many prospects, but I believe the Mets want to clear the money.” The Pirates, Orioles (CBS Sports, July 31), Royals ...

The case for keeping Bartolo Colon

Aug 20 2014 11:35am CDT | Source: mets blog

benberkon For the first time in three decades, the Mets have an abundance of young starting pitching. Especially with Matt Harvey set to return in 2015, the Mets will boast as many as eight legitimate rotation options for next season. In a sea of comparatively green, twenty-somethings vying for a slot, Bartolo Colon, the 17-year veteran whom the Mets signed to a two-year, $20 million contract this past offseason, could be the odd man out. C ...

The Mets' Matt Harvey problem is a Mets problem

Aug 19 2014 2:10pm CDT | Source: SBNation

Why would do the Mets constantly carp and grump about their most exciting pitching prospect in a generation? Because it's what they do. There is no good kind of sports team owner, really. Some are demonstrably better than others, but when the most desirable options are Distant Globetrotting Billionaire With Open Checkbook and Stubborn Octogenarian Pillar Of The Community, Possibly Wearing A Hat, Also With Open Checkbook, we are not dealing in ideal outcomes. There is, ...
