MLB: Mets Pitcher Matt Harvey 'Embarrassed' By Men's Journal Article

Jul 22 2013, 2:17am CDT | by

New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey says he is "embarrassed" by a Men's Journal article which claims he admires New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter and his penchant for dating beautiful women.

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey says he is "embarrassed" by a recent Men's Journal article which has him talking about New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter's love life.

A CBS New York report dated July 18 says Harvey "sounded like a guy who wanted to be seen as the standard for dating, fashion and just about, well, everything else" in reference to the Men's Journal piece which says Harvey looks up to Jeter in terms of the women he's dated and how he's kept this life aspect a secret.

"That guy is the model. I mean, first off, let's just look at the women he'd dated. Obviously, he goes out - he's meeting these girls somewhere - but you never hear about it. That's where I want to be."

Harvey, a Connecticut native, also professed his love for New York City in the article by saying,"Man, do I f------ love this city."

However, the 24-year-old pitching ace shed some light on his Men's Journal comments when he spoke with the New York Times' Andrew Keh, saying they are not an accurate depiction of his true persona.

Keh tweeted Harvey's sentiments on the matter on July 22.

"Matt Harvey:'I read the articles and obviously was embarrassed by it. The way I was portrayed is not who I am and not the person I am.'"

Harvey then said he wanted "to deal with it on the field," according to Newsday's Marc Carig via Sports Illustrated. This is supplemented by an ESPN New York blog from Adam Rubin dated July 21 which has Mets manager Terry Collins saying Harvey played with "a little anger" in their 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field on Sunday.

"I think Matt was  on a little bit of a mission today to silence all the other stuff that's going on and let everybody know he's here to pitch and he's here to play baseball. I think today he went out there with a little anger."

Harvey, who is 8-2 in 2013 with a 2.23 ERA, posed nude in ESPN the Magazine's "The Body" issue.

Alderson talks fences, pitching, coaches

Sep 28 2014 3:59pm CDT | Source: mets blog

The Mets are “likely” to move the center and right-center fences in at Citi Field next season, general manager Sandy Alderson told reporters Sunday after the season’s final game. Alderson said the changes to the fences will be “limited” as he touched on a number of subjects Sunday: Alderson is bullish on the pitching, saying it has “quality and depth”. He isn’t the only one who is optimistic: Matt Harvey told Terry Collins after the game “We’re going to do it next year.” The manager added ...

MLB Rookie of the Year 2014: Breaking Down Best Candidates from Both Leagues

Sep 25 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

As the end of the 2014 MLB season approaches, much of the focus will rightly be on the playoff picture and pennant races. However, the first-year stars who made the biggest splashes are in battles of their own to secure top honors as the most distinguished rookies. There are two front-runners in the American League and National League, respectively. Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu has been a phenom since he set foot on the field, and he appears to be a lock as the ...

Is Jon Niese the odd man out, considering weak infield defense?

Sep 23 2014 12:03pm CDT | Source: mets blog

In the event the Mets go with Wilmer Flores and Daniel Murphy on the infield in 2015, Jon Niese may find himself the odd man out of the starting rotation since he is not a strikeout pitcher and stands to lose the most from a step backward in defense. Maggie Wiggin, MetsBlog Contributor: Zack Wheeler is considered one of the team’s young core pitchers and Niese is a lefty with a very team-friendly contract. I expect both to be back with the Mets next year. ...

Mets nearing extension with GM Sandy Alderson

Sep 22 2014 2:05pm CDT | Source: SBNation

Alderson has run the Mets despite the Wilpons' awfulness for this long, so he's been rewarded with additional babysitting. The Mets have been a mess under general manager Sandy Alderson, but not because of Sandy Alderson. He's been mostly silent about the Wilpons poor management of the Mets, however, and has made the most of what little money he's been handed to work with over the years. Knowing that Alderson is capable of keeping his head down and staying quiet ...

NL Notes: Cubs, Arrieta, Pirates, Revere

Sep 20 2014 11:14am CDT | Source: MLB Trade Rumors

The Cubs top the list of teams who could improve substantially in 2015, Richard Justice of Sports On Earth writes. That was probably an easy call, given the amount of young talent the Cubs have on the verge of making an impact. Justice also lists the Mets (who are set to re-introduce Matt Harvey into a strong core of young pitching), Red Sox, Marlins and Astros as teams who could take big steps forward. Here’s more from the National League. The Cubs h ...

Mets mathematically eliminated from MLB playoffs

Sep 19 2014 9:09pm CDT | Source: SBNation

Terry Collins sees his Mets eliminated from the playoffs, the eighth consecutive season they won't see postseason play. The Mets season has long been over, but the books officially closed on their 2014 playoff hopes on Friday night. New York is leading the Braves, but the second Wild Card-leading Pirates (83-70) beat the Brewers on Friday, giving them Pittsburgh more win than is possible for the 73-80 Mets. Whil ...

Jacob deGrom's Unexpected Emergence Is Exactly What New York Mets Fans Need

Sep 19 2014 1:47pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The New York Mets and their fans have desperately needed a story like Jacob deGrom's. In a year where the team was faced with the familiar feeling of not making the playoffs, staring in the face of a long 162 games without Matt Harvey taking the mound and a season where Curtis Granderson—who has hit under .250 every season except one since 2009—was instantly the biggest offensive threat on the roster when he left the cross ...
