MLB: Mets Pitcher Matt Harvey 'Embarrassed' By Men's Journal Article

Jul 22 2013, 2:17am CDT | by

New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey says he is "embarrassed" by a Men's Journal article which claims he admires New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter and his penchant for dating beautiful women.

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey says he is "embarrassed" by a recent Men's Journal article which has him talking about New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter's love life.

A CBS New York report dated July 18 says Harvey "sounded like a guy who wanted to be seen as the standard for dating, fashion and just about, well, everything else" in reference to the Men's Journal piece which says Harvey looks up to Jeter in terms of the women he's dated and how he's kept this life aspect a secret.

"That guy is the model. I mean, first off, let's just look at the women he'd dated. Obviously, he goes out - he's meeting these girls somewhere - but you never hear about it. That's where I want to be."

Harvey, a Connecticut native, also professed his love for New York City in the article by saying,"Man, do I f------ love this city."

However, the 24-year-old pitching ace shed some light on his Men's Journal comments when he spoke with the New York Times' Andrew Keh, saying they are not an accurate depiction of his true persona.

Keh tweeted Harvey's sentiments on the matter on July 22.

"Matt Harvey:'I read the articles and obviously was embarrassed by it. The way I was portrayed is not who I am and not the person I am.'"

Harvey then said he wanted "to deal with it on the field," according to Newsday's Marc Carig via Sports Illustrated. This is supplemented by an ESPN New York blog from Adam Rubin dated July 21 which has Mets manager Terry Collins saying Harvey played with "a little anger" in their 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field on Sunday.

"I think Matt was  on a little bit of a mission today to silence all the other stuff that's going on and let everybody know he's here to pitch and he's here to play baseball. I think today he went out there with a little anger."

Harvey, who is 8-2 in 2013 with a 2.23 ERA, posed nude in ESPN the Magazine's "The Body" issue.

Jacob deGrom is coming close to his innings limit

Jul 23 2014 3:30pm CDT | Source: mets blog

Mets rookie RHP Jacob deGrom has logged 119 innings this season between Triple-A and the Mets. According to multiple reports, the organization will cap him at 185 total innings this season, meaning he has roughly 10 starts left in 2014. “As we all know, fatigue is what leads to injuries,” Terry Collins said Tuesday, when asked how the team intends to handle deGrom down the stretch of the season. “We don’t need to have another Matt Harvey on our hands.” Matthew Cerrone, Lead ...

Opinion: There is no good reason for a team to acquire Colon before July 31

Jul 23 2014 1:45pm CDT | Source: mets blog

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer The way I see it, there is no good reason for a team to acquire Bartolo Colon before July 31, unless they’re really, really desperate. Otherwise, they wait, and so do the Mets. Why? I suspect Sandy Alderson took a calculated risk giving Colon a second year on his contract because Alderson felt the Mets would be able to move Bartolo before the end of the season in some way, shape or form. So, if giving him the second ye ...

Jeremy Hefner made his third rehab start coming back from Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. Hefner allowed one run on two hits in three innings in the Gulf Coast League. He did not walk a batter and struck out one. Hefner said recently that he may be able to pitch in the major league game in 2014 (ESPN, June 22). “If there’s a need here, and they want me here, I can foresee that,” Hefner said. Hefner underwent Tommy John surgery on August 28, 2013, six weeks before Matt Harvey had the same surg ...

This is the year Noah Syndergaard learned to pitch

Jul 21 2014 10:20am CDT | Source: mets blog

21-year-old Mets RHP prospect Noah Syndergaard will remember 2014 as the year he learned to pitch, he told reporter Jared Diamond (Wall Street Journal, July 18). “I feel like my stuff is there from the physical part of the game,” Syndergaard said, according to Diamond. “It’s just all about the mental aspect.” He is 7-5 with a 5.74 ERA in 17 starts for Triple-A Las Vegas. He has thrown 84.2 innings, leaving him to make around 10-12 st ...

He recently threw a perfect inning for the GCL Mets on July 13. Hefner said recently that he may be able to pitch in the major league game in 2014 (ESPN, June 22). “If there’s a need here, and they want me here, I can foresee that,” Hefner said. Taking Stock: The 2014 Starting Rotation

Jul 16 2014 9:25am CDT | Source: mets blog

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer The Mets have used 8 different starting pitchers in 2014. They have combined for a 3.62 ERA, which is slightly above average and good for seventh-best in the National League at the All Star break. Overall, the rotation has been good, not great. Their collective performance is commensurate with the names on the list. That said, I actually think they are capable of being better than what they’ve shown the first half of the seaso ...

Matt Harvey will keep waiting to throw off a mound

Jul 15 2014 8:31am CDT | Source: mets blog

The Mets told Matt Harvey he will have to wait to throw from a mound until after July, he said to reporter Kristie Ackert (Daily News, July 15). Harvey told reporters in late May that he expected to be throwing off a mound that week, but Sandy Alderson put it on hold. He said in June that he expected to throw off a mound in July. Instead, he’ll continue to throw off flat ground. “I know if I get on a mound and something happens, it will be awfu ...

The last time the Mets only had one All-Star…

Jul 14 2014 3:00pm CDT | Source: mets blog

Sarah LangsAs the All-Stars assemble in Minnesota on Monday, the Mets lone representative this year will be 2B Daniel Murphy. David Wright has made the All-Star Game almost every year he’s been in the bigs, but didn’t have the numbers this year. The pitching has been good, but no one on par with the Wainwrights and Kershaws of the league. Thus, a singular Flushing feature representing this year, Murphy. It’s been more than ten years since the Mets ...

Boras: ‘Tommy John’ rehab best at 14-16 months

Jul 12 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: mets blog

Mets pitcher Matt Harvey wants to get on the mound sooner rather than later as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. His agent, Scott Boras, wants him to take it slow. Boras is in the conservative camp when it comes to returning from the ligament replacement surgery in the elbow and believes the highest success rate for a full recovery is 14-16 months (ESPN, July 11).  “The doctors are always telling us 14 to 16 months they’re having the higher success rates than they are the ...
