MLB: Mets Pitcher Matt Harvey 'Embarrassed' By Men's Journal Article

Jul 22 2013, 2:17am CDT | by

New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey says he is "embarrassed" by a Men's Journal article which claims he admires New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter and his penchant for dating beautiful women.

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey says he is "embarrassed" by a recent Men's Journal article which has him talking about New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter's love life.

A CBS New York report dated July 18 says Harvey "sounded like a guy who wanted to be seen as the standard for dating, fashion and just about, well, everything else" in reference to the Men's Journal piece which says Harvey looks up to Jeter in terms of the women he's dated and how he's kept this life aspect a secret.

"That guy is the model. I mean, first off, let's just look at the women he'd dated. Obviously, he goes out - he's meeting these girls somewhere - but you never hear about it. That's where I want to be."

Harvey, a Connecticut native, also professed his love for New York City in the article by saying,"Man, do I f------ love this city."

However, the 24-year-old pitching ace shed some light on his Men's Journal comments when he spoke with the New York Times' Andrew Keh, saying they are not an accurate depiction of his true persona.

Keh tweeted Harvey's sentiments on the matter on July 22.

"Matt Harvey:'I read the articles and obviously was embarrassed by it. The way I was portrayed is not who I am and not the person I am.'"

Harvey then said he wanted "to deal with it on the field," according to Newsday's Marc Carig via Sports Illustrated. This is supplemented by an ESPN New York blog from Adam Rubin dated July 21 which has Mets manager Terry Collins saying Harvey played with "a little anger" in their 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field on Sunday.

"I think Matt was  on a little bit of a mission today to silence all the other stuff that's going on and let everybody know he's here to pitch and he's here to play baseball. I think today he went out there with a little anger."

Harvey, who is 8-2 in 2013 with a 2.23 ERA, posed nude in ESPN the Magazine's "The Body" issue.

New York Mets free agent projections: starters

Nov 1 2014 9:28pm CDT | Source: Yardbarker: MLB

Earlier this week I analyzed the New York Mets’ needs in the bullpen. Now I’ll stick with pitching but move into the starting rotation. As it so happens the Mets are very deep at starter going into 2015. Much of the rotation is young and under team control and the one wily, old veteran, Bartolo Colon, has one more year and $11 million left on his contract. As a result of controlling the contracts of 7 or 8 starting pitchers, it’s unlikely that the Mets ...

They also reinstated Bobby Parnell and Matt Harvey from the 60-day disabled list. This now puts the  Mets 40-man roster now stands at 34. October 30 MLB Trade Rumors posted their projected arbitration awards for nine eligible Mets players. Arbitration Eligible Salary Projections Bobby Parnell, RP – $3.7MM Daniel Murphy, 2B – $ ...

Why isn’t Jose Reyes on the Mets?

Oct 22 2014 2:11pm CDT | Source: mets blog

Matthew Cerrone: I got unwillingly sucked in to a thread this morning on Twitter about Jose Reyes, David Wright, injuries, production, etc. The general premise by one fan was that the Mets could only choose to keep one of Wright or Reyes and they chose David because he was less of an injury risk than Jose. Of course, while the two have essentially played in the same numbers of games since Reyes left, Jose appears mo ...

Selling High On Jacob deGrom

Oct 13 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Yardbarker: MLB

Jacob deGrom has been the Mets’ most exciting player this season.  He’s lit up the radar gun, struck out 144 batters, and put himself in prime position to land the coveted NL Rookie of the year award. But in a Mets’ organization flush with talented arms, is the time to trade Jacob deGrom now? The Mets have serious holes around the diamond, but even without deGrom, starting pitching will be their biggest strength.  Sans deGrom, the Mets will still sport a rotation of Matt Harvey, ...

D-Backs, Cubs and M’s have SS to deal, is there a match with Mets?

Oct 9 2014 5:44am CDT | Source: mets blog

It doesn’t seem new GM Dave Stewart is interested in doing much in trade, even though he has three young shortstops, any one of which could be used to acquire a starting pitcher (AZ Republic, Oct. 9). According to the report, SS Didi Gregorius or prospect Nick Ahmed could net them a young, controllable, top-of-the-rotation pitcher. “You’re not getting back Matt Harvey or Jacob deGrom, but maybe you get back Rafael Montero,” one scout told reporter Nick Piecoro. Inside the 2014 Numbers of Each MLB Team's Regular-Season Injury Impact

Oct 8 2014 10:22pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

For the past 10 years, I've been keeping track of injuries in baseball. Using a proprietary database, the difference in how teams manage injuries has often led to insights. Some teams are good at keeping their players healthy; some aren't. Some teams take injuries seriously; some just shrug and say it's part of the game. Some are consistent; some aren't. In 2014, there's some clear insights to be gained. There are only two ways to win in baseball: ...

The Mets have already won the offseason

Oct 5 2014 2:34pm CDT | Source: Yardbarker: MLB

With an eagerness and hunger to make it into the playoffs next season, the Mets need to have a successful offseason. Sandy Alderson will be looking to get either a shortstop or left fielder to help make the Mets’ offense better than it was this season. Even without signing a free agent, the Mets will be a winner this offseason, as the ace of the team, Matt Harvey is set to return. The free agent market has good starting pitching available, with stars such as Jon Lester, Max Scherzer and ...

Opinion: The Mets Finally Have a Core to Build Around

Oct 3 2014 12:20pm CDT | Source: mets blog

Brian P. Mangan, Contributor to MetsBlog: The Mets finally appear to have a core group of players worth building around – and not just mysterious, highly-touted prospects, but young, cost-controlled players who are already in the Major Leagues, and who can bring sustained success to Flushing. In Juan Lagares, Lucas Duda, Daniel Murphy, Jacob deGrom, David Wright and Matt Harvey, the Mets have a group of players to build around the likes of which this team hasn’t seen in year ...
