Gersson Rosas is the new general manager of the Dallas Mavericks

This was confirmed by no less that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban in a July 22 featured article written by Corbett Smith of the Dallas News. Former general manager Donnie Nelson will retain his role as the Mavericks' president of basketball operations.

Cuban thought Gersson typified the kind of front office personnel he wanted, as stated on ESPN Dallas KESN-FM.

"We try to take pride in being one of the most technologically advanced teams out there in all of professional sports, not just the NBA.

"And to keep on pushing the envelope into new directions that I wanted to go, we wanted...to add not just brain power, but organizational, management and process power. And I asked Donnie to go out there and find out who we thought would be the best person to do this, and he came up with Gersson's name."

According to the Associated Press, Rosas, who is a native of Colombia, will report to Nelson. He progressed in the Houston Rockets organization from being an intern to their vice president of basketball operations, spending nine years in all with the franchise. He was also a key part of the Rockets' pursuit of coveted center Dwight Howard, who the Mavericks also wanted.

Rosas also assumed general manager responsibilities for the Rockets' developmental league team, the Rio Grande Vipers. Aside from his tenure with the Houston Cougars as a graduate assistant when he was staring out, Rosas was also the coordinator of the Venezuelan national team at the 2002 world championships.

His departure marks the second major front office departure for the Rockets. Another former Houston executive, Sam Hinkie, relinquished his role as executive vice president of basketball operations to accept general manager duties with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Mavericks were negotiating with Rosas for the past month. The NBA's highest-ranked Hispanic front office executive of basketball operations will now take his act to Dallas.

Poch de la Rosa follows all major U.S. sports: NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and the NCAA. His favorite teams are the Colts, Braves, Pacers, Sharks and Irish, respectively.
