NBA: Mavericks Officially Sign G Monta Ellis to 3-Year Deal

Jul 24 2013, 6:33pm CDT | by

The Dallas Mavericks officially sign guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday to a three-year deal worth more than $25 million.

The Dallas Mavericks officially signed shooting guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. ESPN Dallas/Fort Worth's Tim MacMahon reports the deal is more than $25 million.  The Associated Press pegs the deal as between $25 to $30 million.

MacMahon adds Dallas wanted to make the deal official because it had to create additional cap space by waiving center Bernard James and guard Josh Akognon. They both had non-guaranteed minimum contracts.

Ellis had a player option worth $11 going into the 2013-14 season while still a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. In light of him rejecting Milwaukee's two-year, $25 million offer last fall, he chose to opt out of the final year of his contract last month. He became an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Ellis is expected to start right away at the 2-guard spot alongside Jose Calderon, a new free agent point guard acquisition. Together with center Samuel Dalembert, they are projected to be the three new starters for the Mavericks.

In spite of Ellis averaging 19.2 points with the Bucks last season, his shooting averages went down after he was traded from the Golden State Warriors in the 2011-12 NBA season that had center Andrew Bogut going to the Bay Area. He posted shooting percentages of 41.6 percent from the field and 28.7 percent from the three-point area, respectively, per ESPN.

For NBA his career, Ellis has averaged 19.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

Early Win-Loss Predictions for Dallas Mavericks Next Season

Aug 19 2014 10:36pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

After having one of their most active offseasons in recent years, the Dallas Mavericks seem to have their roster all figured out. They made their big trade with the New York Knicks, re-signed parts of the old guard and brought in some new blood as well and now look primed to put all the pieces together. All this activity of course wasn’t just for fun. The Mavs are serious about improving upon last season, hence sp ...

Can Dallas Mavericks Survive with Aging Point Guard Platoon?

Aug 15 2014 2:04pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Dallas Mavericks may lack star power at point guard, but they make up for it with depth. After trading away one of the more reliable game-managers and shooters in the game in Jose Calderon in order to acquire Tyson Chandler from the New York Knicks, the Mavericks are betting that a veteran platoon of guards will be able to share the load and keep one of the league's very best offenses chugging along. Who will be the man primarily tasked with that jo ...

Mavericks 2014-15 Schedule: Top Games, Championship Odds and Record Predictions

Aug 13 2014 5:21pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Dallas Mavericks barely qualified for the NBA playoffs last season before pushing the eventual champion San Antonio Spurs to seven games in the opening round. They will look to take another step forward during the 2014-15 campaign. Dallas' offseason moves went a long way in ensuring the team would have a more reliable starting group outside of Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis. A trade with the New York ...

How Dallas Mavericks Snuck Back into the NBA Title Conversation

Aug 6 2014 3:08pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The 2011 champions just might be back for more. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has made significant strides this summer in restoring his franchise to contender status. With the splashy acquisition of restricted free agent Chandler Parsons and several smaller moves, general manager and president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson has no doubt made his boss proud. In the process, he's also given the iconic Dirk Nowitzki serious reason to be hopeful. As ...

Why Chandler Parsons Is An Excellent Complement to Dirk Nowitzki

Jul 31 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Maybe Chandler Parsons' three-year, $46 million contract is a bit bloated; maybe it isn't. But no matter how much you value a promising offensive piece with three-point range and a solid game off the bounce, there's no question that he'll fit seamlessly into the Dallas Mavericks offense alongside Dirk Nowitzki.  With addition of Tyson Chandler to solidify the back end of the defense, Parsons will likely take over as the starting ...

Do Recent Additions Give Dallas Mavericks the NBA's Best Offense?

Jul 24 2014 6:36pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Dallas Mavericks haven't experienced much playoff success since taking down the Miami Heat in the 2011 NBA Finals.  In fact, they've advanced to the postseason in two of the three campaigns that have come to pass since they held up the Larry O'Brien Trophy but haven't even won a single playoff series during those appearances. In 2013-14, they came quite close, taking the San Antonio Spurs to seven games before succumbing to the eventual champions, but the ...

Breaking Down How Chandler Parsons and Dirk Nowitzki Can Thrive Together

Jul 18 2014 6:49am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

After the Houston Rockets refused to match the three-year, $46 million offer sheet he signed with Mark Cuban in a nightclub, Chandler Parsons is the newest member of the Dallas Mavericks. Parsons wasted no time this summer in finding this new situation, and it appears the Mavericks offered Parsons something he didn't feel the Rockets were prepared to give him—a feature role (via Marc J. Spears, Yahoo Sports): We got a cha ...

Lance Stephenson is 'certainly on the list' of Mavericks' targets

Jul 13 2014 2:47pm CDT | Source: SBNation

It appears the Mavericks will make an aggressive run at Lance Stephenson if the Rockets match their offer sheet on Chandler Parsons. The Dallas Mavericks have an offer sheet out to Chandler Parsons, but the team will need to look elsewhere if the Houston Rockets ultimately match. That could lead the Mavs to make a run at Indiana Pacers free agent Lance Stephenson, team owner Mark Cuban told reporters at Las Vegas Summer League on Saturday. "We'r ...
