NBA: Mavericks Officially Sign G Monta Ellis to 3-Year Deal

The Dallas Mavericks officially sign guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday to a three-year deal worth more than $25 million.

The Dallas Mavericks officially signed shooting guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. ESPN Dallas/Fort Worth's Tim MacMahon reports the deal is more than $25 million.  The Associated Press pegs the deal as between $25 to $30 million.

MacMahon adds Dallas wanted to make the deal official because it had to create additional cap space by waiving center Bernard James and guard Josh Akognon. They both had non-guaranteed minimum contracts.

Ellis had a player option worth $11 going into the 2013-14 season while still a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. In light of him rejecting Milwaukee's two-year, $25 million offer last fall, he chose to opt out of the final year of his contract last month. He became an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Ellis is expected to start right away at the 2-guard spot alongside Jose Calderon, a new free agent point guard acquisition. Together with center Samuel Dalembert, they are projected to be the three new starters for the Mavericks.

In spite of Ellis averaging 19.2 points with the Bucks last season, his shooting averages went down after he was traded from the Golden State Warriors in the 2011-12 NBA season that had center Andrew Bogut going to the Bay Area. He posted shooting percentages of 41.6 percent from the field and 28.7 percent from the three-point area, respectively, per ESPN.

For NBA his career, Ellis has averaged 19.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

When the Dallas Mavericks scooped up Chandler Parsons with a massive three-year, $46 million offer (with a gaudy $16 million player option for year three, according to ShamSports.com), the team's offensive ceiling was raised a few notches.  Through four games, the Mavericks appear determined to shatter that ceiling.  After holding on to defeat the Boston Celtics, 118-113, Monday night, the Mavericks (3 ...

Marcus Smart flashes his potential in breakout performance vs. Mavericks

Nov 4 2014 1:24pm CST | Source: SBNation

The Celtics' rookie showed why the team believes in him so much during a furious Boston rally on Monday. Marcus Smart's NBA career had gotten off to a rather nondescript start before Monday night. Smart is averaging 6.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 21.3 minutes per game through three contests, and he's shooting just 28.6 percent overall and 14.3 percent from three. But Smart showed flashes of his immense potential during a thrilling second-half rally in ...
