MacMahon adds Dallas wanted to make the deal official because it had to create additional cap space by waiving center Bernard James and guard Josh Akognon. They both had non-guaranteed minimum contracts.
Ellis had a player option worth $11 going into the 2013-14 season while still a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. In light of him rejecting Milwaukee's two-year, $25 million offer last fall, he chose to opt out of the final year of his contract last month. He became an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Ellis is expected to start right away at the 2-guard spot alongside Jose Calderon, a new free agent point guard acquisition. Together with center Samuel Dalembert, they are projected to be the three new starters for the Mavericks.
In spite of Ellis averaging 19.2 points with the Bucks last season, his shooting averages went down after he was traded from the Golden State Warriors in the 2011-12 NBA season that had center Andrew Bogut going to the Bay Area. He posted shooting percentages of 41.6 percent from the field and 28.7 percent from the three-point area, respectively, per ESPN.
