NBA: Mavericks Officially Sign G Monta Ellis to 3-Year Deal

Jul 24 2013, 6:33pm CDT | by

The Dallas Mavericks officially sign guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday to a three-year deal worth more than $25 million.

The Dallas Mavericks officially signed shooting guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. ESPN Dallas/Fort Worth's Tim MacMahon reports the deal is more than $25 million.  The Associated Press pegs the deal as between $25 to $30 million.

MacMahon adds Dallas wanted to make the deal official because it had to create additional cap space by waiving center Bernard James and guard Josh Akognon. They both had non-guaranteed minimum contracts.

Ellis had a player option worth $11 going into the 2013-14 season while still a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. In light of him rejecting Milwaukee's two-year, $25 million offer last fall, he chose to opt out of the final year of his contract last month. He became an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Ellis is expected to start right away at the 2-guard spot alongside Jose Calderon, a new free agent point guard acquisition. Together with center Samuel Dalembert, they are projected to be the three new starters for the Mavericks.

In spite of Ellis averaging 19.2 points with the Bucks last season, his shooting averages went down after he was traded from the Golden State Warriors in the 2011-12 NBA season that had center Andrew Bogut going to the Bay Area. He posted shooting percentages of 41.6 percent from the field and 28.7 percent from the three-point area, respectively, per ESPN.

For NBA his career, Ellis has averaged 19.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

Entering the last season of his current contract with the Portland Trail Blazers, Wesley Matthews is brimming over with confidence.  The shooting guard is coming off a season in which his perimeter shooting and defensive prowess fit in perfectly with the rest of the Blazers, helping them get off to a roaring start and still earn the No. 4 record in the brutal Western Conference despite cooling off during the stretch run. Matthews, then in his fifth season since leav ...

Is It Realistic to Assume Tyson Chandler Can Regain 2011 Form for Mavs?

Oct 9 2014 12:03pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

When the Dallas Mavericks struck a deal with the New York Knicks in June to land Tyson Chandler, the fans rejoiced. The 7'1" center was one of the key cogs in Dallas' 2011 championship run, and Chandler's return has allowed those fuzzy, warm memories to resurface. But that was four seasons ago. Many expect Chandler, 32, to jump right back in and anchor what has been a faltering defense in h ...

#SLAMTop50: Dirk Nowitzki, no. 21

Oct 7 2014 11:00am CDT | Source: slamonline

Dirk Nowitzki has been the face of the Dallas Mavericks for more than a decade. His one-legged fadeaway is one of the most iconic shots in NBA history and has been the source of many big-time buckets throughout the years. The burden has been great…but the load might finally become lightened. The Big German wasn’t himself two seasons ago when he fell below 20 ppg for the first time since his sophomore season. He underwent knee surgery that kept him out for the first third of the se ...

#SLAMTop50: DeMar DeRozan, no. 30

Oct 2 2014 2:00pm CDT | Source: slamonline

Enjoying three warm chocolate chip cookies straight out of the oven rather than two. Praying with your eyes closed for the official at the scorer’s table to add just one more second to the game clock following a hectic play in the fourth quarter, as the sweat drips down your face and onto the hardwood. Losing a Game 7 in the first NBA Playoffs series of your career 104-103 by a single point on your home floor. What a difference the number one makes. For DeM ...

How Dirk Nowitzki's New Shot Release Will Help His Production

Sep 30 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Speed and strength have never been the calling card of Dallas Mavericks superstar Dirk Nowitzki. Footwork, craftiness and one of the deadliest jump shots ever have carried him for 16 NBA seasons and will one day lead him into the Hall of Fame.  Without superior athletic gifts, Nowitzki has also relied on a constant tinkering of his game in the offseason to keep defenders off-balance. According to Nowitzki, via ESPN.com's Ma ...
