NBA: Mavericks Officially Sign G Monta Ellis to 3-Year Deal

Jul 24 2013, 6:33pm CDT | by

The Dallas Mavericks officially sign guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday to a three-year deal worth more than $25 million.

The Dallas Mavericks officially signed shooting guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. ESPN Dallas/Fort Worth's Tim MacMahon reports the deal is more than $25 million.  The Associated Press pegs the deal as between $25 to $30 million.

MacMahon adds Dallas wanted to make the deal official because it had to create additional cap space by waiving center Bernard James and guard Josh Akognon. They both had non-guaranteed minimum contracts.

Ellis had a player option worth $11 going into the 2013-14 season while still a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. In light of him rejecting Milwaukee's two-year, $25 million offer last fall, he chose to opt out of the final year of his contract last month. He became an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Ellis is expected to start right away at the 2-guard spot alongside Jose Calderon, a new free agent point guard acquisition. Together with center Samuel Dalembert, they are projected to be the three new starters for the Mavericks.

In spite of Ellis averaging 19.2 points with the Bucks last season, his shooting averages went down after he was traded from the Golden State Warriors in the 2011-12 NBA season that had center Andrew Bogut going to the Bay Area. He posted shooting percentages of 41.6 percent from the field and 28.7 percent from the three-point area, respectively, per ESPN.

For NBA his career, Ellis has averaged 19.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

San Antonio Spurs v Dallas Mavericks - Game Four
The Dallas Mavericks haven't experienced much playoff success since taking down the Miami Heat in the 2011 NBA Finals.  In fact, they've advanced to the postseason in two of the three campaigns that have come to pass since they held up the Larry O'Brien Trophy but haven't even won a single playoff series during those appearances. In 2013-14, they came quite close, taking the San Antonio Spurs to seven games before ...

Breaking Down How Chandler Parsons and Dirk Nowitzki Can Thrive Together

Jul 18 2014 6:49am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Phoenix Suns v Dallas Mavericks
After the Houston Rockets refused to match the three-year, $46 million offer sheet he signed with Mark Cuban in a nightclub, Chandler Parsons is the newest member of the Dallas Mavericks. Parsons wasted no time this summer in finding this new situation, and it appears the Mavericks offered Parsons something he didn't feel the Rockets were prepared to give him—a feature role (via Marc J. Spears, Yahoo Sports): We got a chance to win. Coach [Rick] Carlisle is the best coac ...

This is another installment of Court Changes—a summer breakdown of trades and free-agency signings. The series will get into the motivations behind the moves and how these transactions will affect teams’ trajectories. All opinions are those of the writer. Lance Stephenson is 'certainly on the list' of Mavericks' targets

Jul 13 2014 2:47pm CDT | Source: SBNation

Op, Nina Agdal & Chandler Parsons Kick Off Spring
It appears the Mavericks will make an aggressive run at Lance Stephenson if the Rockets match their offer sheet on Chandler Parsons. The Dallas Mavericks have an offer sheet out to Chandler Parsons, but the team will need to look elsewhere if the Houston Rockets ultimately match. That could lead the Mavs to make a run at Indiana Pacers free agent Lance Stephenson, team owner Mark Cuban told reporters at Las Vegas Summer League on Saturday. ...

5 2014 NBA Draft Prospects Dallas Mavericks Must Target

Jun 17 2014 12:12am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Phoenix Suns v Dallas Mavericks
It's finally time for the Dallas Mavericks to blend a little youth into the roster. There's no better way for an aging team to get an adrenaline shot than by drafting some young studs in June. And given that of the top seven players in minutes played only Monta Ellis is younger than thirty, a young prospect sounds like just what the doctor ordered. But of course with a veteran-laden team, there isn't a lot of playing time to go around. So ...

Q+A: Rodney Hood

Jun 3 2014 2:16pm CDT | Source: slamonline

2014 NBA Draft
Before arriving at Duke University in July of 2012, Rodney Hood earned SEC All-Freshmen honors as a starter for Mississippi State. The Meridian, MS, native then moved on to Durham, where—after sitting out his transfer year—he’d finish his college career as an All-ACC player and team captain for Mike Krzyzewski’s Blue Devils. Now, the versatile, 6-8 wing with a sweet stroke from long-range is preparing to continue his lifelong journey from Mississippi to the League. Regarded by ...

James Harden Somehow Got Two All-Defensive Team Votes

Jun 2 2014 2:09pm CDT | Source: SportsGrid

Maxim Hot 100 Event - Arrivals
The NBA’s All-Defensive Teams were released today, and the first and second teams are pretty solid. You could argue that LeBron James should have made the first team, or that either DeAndre Jordan or Anthony Davis earned a spot over Roy Hibbert, but overall, the voters got it right. There are, however, two people who gave James Harden, one of the league’s laziest and plain worst defenders, All-Defense votes. It’s hard to overstate how ridiculous this ...

Lance Stephenson’s Free Agent Market Is Reportedly ‘Already Drying Up’

May 31 2014 12:21pm CDT | Source: slamonline

Toronto Raptors v Miami Heat
Between the trash talking, the blowing in LeBron’s ear, the love tap on his face, the palm blow to Norris Cole’s dome and other “buffoonery” to try to get under the Heat’s proverbial skin, Lance Stephenson may have sabotaged his free agent market value. ESPN reports: When the week began, “Larry [Bird] will stick by Lance tooth and nail” was still the way it was being put to us.   By week’s end, after too many ill-conceived attempts to mess with LeBron’s psyche to list, it was impossible to resis ...

Pairing Dante Exum and Victor Oladipo Is No-Brainer for Orlando Magic

May 30 2014 7:48pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Orlando Magic v Chicago Bulls
For many teams on draft night, there's an internal struggle of selecting the best player available or finding the best fit. That might not be an issue for the Orlando Magic if they hone in on Dante Exum. The Australian point guard prospect may not be as exposed as some of his peers, but he doesn't seem to have very many areas of weakness. Let's allow Jonathan Tjarks of SB Nation to introduce you to the young guard who should be a lock for a top-f ...
