NFL: Browns OC Turner Thinks RB Richardson Can Be Like Emmitt Smith or LT

Jul 24 2013, 10:57pm CDT | by

Clevelend Browns offensive coordinator Norv Turner believes running back Trent Richardson has what it takes to be as great as his former players Emmitt Smith or LaDanian Tomlinson.

Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson as the next Emmitt Smith or LaDanian Tomlinson?

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, this is certainly what Browns offensive coordinator Norv Turner thinks

"Just watching him and seeing him against us when I came here in October and then watching the tape, yeah, he's that type of runner. Obviously, he's the third pick in the draft. I think he has a lot of great days ahead of him. I always have a problem comparing players because each guy has his own unique style, but I think he's capable of doing great things."

Richardson happens to hail from the same Pensacola, Fla. high school as NFL greats Smith and Tomlinson.

Turner also believes Richardson will be in for a 300-carry season, in spite of current pass-oriented trends.

"Obviously, the trend in the league is to not do that, but I think it depends on your team and everyone around it. If that player is your best player, then I think it's probably a good thing to have him in the game and give him the ball. So I would hope Trent would have that many carries. That means he's playing healthy and playing at a pretty high level."

Turner was hired by the Browns to be their offensive coordinator back in January. When he coached the San Diego Chargers in 2012, he already marveled at Richardson's abilities at the running back position.

The particular game that stood out was Cleveland's 7-6 victory in which Richardson had 122 yards on 24 carries which included a 26-yard run for a touchdown.

Dan Hanzus of NFL.com says should Richardson get at least 300 carries and match his receptions from 2012 (51) , he would put himself in a position to have 350 touches next season. Such a number would put him in the top five in the NFL. Arian Foster led the way in this department with 391 in 2012.

Richardson had 267 carries for 950 yards for 11 touchdowns in 15 games last season.

Colts Have Flaws but Positioned Back on Top of AFC South

Oct 10 2014 5:10am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

It was a game, that for once, went exactly as planned.  Andrew Luck versus J.J. Watt, they said. Luck threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns, overcoming a phenomenal game by Watt, who finished with two sacks, seven tackles, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and three batted passes.  Check.  T.Y. Hilton would have his usual big game against the Houston Texans, they said. All the third-year receiver from Florida International did was catch all nine of his targets for 223 yards and a to ...

The Indianapolis Colts were only 16th in the NFL in rushing yards per game entering Thursday’s game with the Houston Texans, but running backs Ahmad Bradshaw and Trent Richardson made their mark early. In fact, both found the end zone in the first quarter, much to the delight of fantasy owners.  SportsCenter described the early action: Thursday’s performance is indicative of why fantasy owners should not give up on the Colts backfield, even if the rushing attack isn’t a ...

Colts' Pat McAfee Does It All on Onside Kick Recovery Versus Texans

Oct 9 2014 7:48pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee is off to a great start this season punting the ball, but he's also making an impact on kickoffs. For the second time this season, McAfee was able to help the Colts convert on an onside kick. This time, McAfee saw that there was no one close to him on the Texans return team, so he kicked the ball to himself. A couple of plays later, Trent Richardso ...

Oct 9 2014 7:00am CDT | Source: SBNation

It's a battle for AFC South supremacy Thursday night. Will the fantasy options show up to keep it interesting? The season scarcely could have started better for the Houston Texans. Coming off a disastrous 2013 season, the Texans opened up 2-0, while the AFC South favorite Indianapolis Colts were 0-2. Since, though, the Colts have rolled off three straight wins, and the Texans have lost two of three, bringing the two back into a tie atop the divisio ...

Start 'Em, Sit 'Em Week 6: Final Review Before Thursday Night Football

Oct 9 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Deciding to advise fantasy players to either start or sit players without knowing what their roster looks like or how their league format works can be a tricky exercise. After all, it's an unwise person who makes a decision or judgement without the proper context.  So when you read on, keep in mind that I'm deciding on whether or not a player should be started or sat in a vacuum. You might not have a choice but to start the ...

Colts Sit Atop AFC South, and Texans Aren't Even a Real Threat

Oct 5 2014 4:58pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Sometimes, preseason projections are made to look foolish. The New Orleans Saints are crashing and burning. The Kansas City Chiefs seem to be much better than statistical analysis of their 2013 season thought they'd be. The New England Patriots offense is in shambles. But sometimes, preseason projections are very much correct. And here we are, with the AFC South looking all but decided as Week 6 enters the picture.  The Houston Texans are 3-2, tied ...
