NFL: Browns OC Turner Thinks RB Richardson Can Be Like Emmitt Smith or LT

Jul 24 2013, 10:57pm CDT | by

Clevelend Browns offensive coordinator Norv Turner believes running back Trent Richardson has what it takes to be as great as his former players Emmitt Smith or LaDanian Tomlinson.

Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson as the next Emmitt Smith or LaDanian Tomlinson?

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, this is certainly what Browns offensive coordinator Norv Turner thinks

"Just watching him and seeing him against us when I came here in October and then watching the tape, yeah, he's that type of runner. Obviously, he's the third pick in the draft. I think he has a lot of great days ahead of him. I always have a problem comparing players because each guy has his own unique style, but I think he's capable of doing great things."

Richardson happens to hail from the same Pensacola, Fla. high school as NFL greats Smith and Tomlinson.

Turner also believes Richardson will be in for a 300-carry season, in spite of current pass-oriented trends.

"Obviously, the trend in the league is to not do that, but I think it depends on your team and everyone around it. If that player is your best player, then I think it's probably a good thing to have him in the game and give him the ball. So I would hope Trent would have that many carries. That means he's playing healthy and playing at a pretty high level."

Turner was hired by the Browns to be their offensive coordinator back in January. When he coached the San Diego Chargers in 2012, he already marveled at Richardson's abilities at the running back position.

The particular game that stood out was Cleveland's 7-6 victory in which Richardson had 122 yards on 24 carries which included a 26-yard run for a touchdown.

Dan Hanzus of NFL.com says should Richardson get at least 300 carries and match his receptions from 2012 (51) , he would put himself in a position to have 350 touches next season. Such a number would put him in the top five in the NFL. Arian Foster led the way in this department with 391 in 2012.

Richardson had 267 carries for 950 yards for 11 touchdowns in 15 games last season.

Every once in a while, national, fantasy or other-market analysts will ask me an interesting question: How do Colts fans feel about offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton? The question, to some degree, just makes me laugh because of the complexity of the situation.  How do Colts fans feel about Pep Hamilton?  I don't know if I could give a succinct, accurate answer, but I'll say this: They like him a heck of ...

Nov 3 2014 9:00am CST | Source: SBNation

Another member of the Manning family gets to take on rising star Andrew Luck. In each of the last two years, Andrew Luck faced off with Peyton Manning in some of the most ballyhooed (and enjoyable) games of their respective seasons. Luck gets his chance at the younger Manning brother when his Indianapolis Colts take on the New York Giants. The Colts began the season off slow, dropping their first two games behind the frustrating offensive game plan of Pep Hamilton. ...

NFL Week 9 Picks: Final Overview of Consensus Picks

Nov 2 2014 9:00am CST | Source: Bleacher Report

It's not uncommon for NFL bettors to want to know what the general public thinks of impending matchups. Some even base their final decisions around how much action a team is—or isn't—getting prior to its contest. Compiling consensus picks allows us to gauge how the everyday person views a certain game. While it can be used as a betting tool, it's also just plain, old-fashioned fun to see if the average Joe likes your team's chances of winnin ...

Week 9 ends with two teams coming off losses. Who will get back to the good? Things were looking up for the New York Giants a few weeks ago, when they were 3-2 and in the thick of things in the NFC East. Since then, they've lost two games and had a bye, and watched the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles distance themselves. The Indianapolis Colts, meanwhile, looked like world-beaters from W ...

Nov 2 2014 6:28am CST | Source: SBNation

Ahmad Bradshaw has been one of the best values in all of fantasy football. Will that continue? The Indianapolis Colts are cruising on offense. Quarterback Andrew Luck is an MVP candidate, but running back Ahmad Bradshaw has been an unheralded star. Bradshaw has eight scores on the season and he's rushing the ball at a 4.9 yards-per-carry clip. His backup, Trent Richardson, is banged up with an injury, but should play Monday night vs. the New York Giants. Howe ...

Fantasy Football Week 9 Rankings: Projections for Players with Matchups We Love

Halloween is a pretty amazing holiday, but certain behaviors would just be weird at a different time in the year. Can you imagine asking a random stranger for candy in the middle of the summer? Or randomly dressing up in a superhero costume on some random day in the spring (Comic-Con attendees are obviously the exception)? Or decorating your yard with skeletons and witches for Christmas? The point is, some activi ...
