The Florida Panthers signed veteran center Scott Gomez to a one-year deal

According to George Richards of the Miami Herald, the contract is worth $900,000. Richards writes Gomez is expected to be a bottom-six forward for the Panthers due to the decline in his offensive production in recent seasons.

In spite of this, Florida general manager Dale Tallon believes Gomez can add much-needed depth and leadership to the team.

"Scott is a veteran center who adds further depth to the middle of our lineup. He is a quick and skilled forward, with a wealth of hockey experience including two Stanley Cup titles, who will be a leader for our younger players."

Gomez's experience will certainly help a center rotation that includes Nick Bjugstad, Marcel Goc, Drew Shore, Shawn Matthias and first-round draft pick Aleksander Barkov.

Gomez, 33, leads all active U.S.-born players with 530 assists and 701 points. He was a member of the United States men's national hockey team for the 2006 Winter Olympics.

He has previously played for the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and San Jose Sharks. He was with the Devils' 2000 and 2003 Stanley Cup championship teams.
