Roger Mason, Jr. as the next NBPA president?

USA Today Sports' Jeff Zillgitt reports Mason is a strong candidate to replace Derek Fisher. Mason cites his being with the NBPA for 10 years and serving as vice president of the executive committee as grounds for his candidacy.

Mason maintains he has no problems associating with people in the NBA, regardless of position - whether it be incoming NBA commissioner Adam Silver, MVP LeBron James or a bench warmer.

"What the NBPA needs is someone who is a representative of the majority of our players - somebody who understands where we've been, where we are now and where we need to go and I can humbly say that's me.

"As an executive committee, we've been pretty quiet, but steadily, we've been rebuilding the PA over the past six months, and we'll have some really exciting news next week after our meeting. As an executive committe, we've been evaluating everything from finances to productivity to player services - the top to the bottom. We've really been leading the charge to rebuild and relaunch the NBPA. We're excited to share our plan next week at the meeting."

The meeting Mason was referring to was with the players' union in Las Vegas, where he will officially declare his candidacy.

James was previously interested in the presidency but informed his Miami Heat teammates and NBPA secretary-treasurer James Jones on August 12 that he won't run anymore due to a very tight schdule.

Mason is a 10-year NBA veteran who averaged 5.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists with the then-New Orleans Pelicans in 2012-13.

He is currently a free agent but expects to sign with a new team before next season unfolds.
