Detroit Tigers first baseman Prince  Fielder has reportedly filed for divorce from his wife of eight years, Chanel.

According to Matthew B. Mowery of the Dearborn Press & Guide, Fielder filed for the divorce on May 28 in Orange County, Fla. - where the Fielders reside during the offsesason - citing the website LarryBrownSports.com.

In Mowery's words,"A search of the Orange County Clerk of Courts website turned up a record of a dissolution of marriage for the two parties, filed on that date."

Tigers right fielder Torii Hunter defended Fielder's sub-par on-field performance when he went on the air for a radio interview with Detroit's WMGC-FM on Monday.

"Prince is a strong guy. A lot of people don't know what's going on in his life. This guy's a strong guy. He's out there every day. He won't come out of the lineup, no matter what's going on off the field or on the field. He's a strong guy. Us as players, we know what's really going on and we appreciate him going out there every day."

When told about Hunter's comments, Fielder quickly brushed them off, saying,"Yeah? Well, I'm gonna turn the story off. It's fine. Everything's fine," according to USA Today Sports.

Fielder's father Cecil, himself a former major leaguer, said there's a price to pay for being a public figure but believes his son will handle the situation just fine, per the Detroit News

"But it's something that comes with the beast. You're a public figure, you're one of the Tigers favorites, and he's gonna deal with it and he's gonna be fine.

"It's gonna be a tough situation. He's got my grandchildren involved. He's gonna handle this situation like a man and deal with it, and it's gonna come out for the best."

Fielder and his now ex-wife were married in 2005 during the Triple-A All-Star break while he was with the Nashville Sounds.

The 29-year-old Fielder is in his second season with the Tigers (ninth overall). He is currently batting on a .260 average with 19 home runs and 85 RBIs through 124 games played in the current 2013 MLB season.
