NCAA: Ex-Buckeyes Coach Jim Tressel To Teach in Akron

Former Ohio State Buckeyes head football coach Jim Tressel is set to co-teach a "General Principles of Coaching" class this fall at the University of Akron.

Former Ohio State Buckeyes head football coach Jim Tressel will take his act to the classroom.

Zac Jackson of Fox Sports Ohio writes Tressel, who has been serving as Vice President for Student Success at the University of Akron, will teach a class called "General Principles of Coaching" at the school this fall together with another former football coach, Jim Dennison

His class will be open to a variety of people which includes undergraduates, graduate students, high school coaches and the general public. It will also be facilitated via long distance learning at five other campus locations.

University of Akron professor and department chairman Victor Pinheiro says the course will help students become more productive coaches, per the school's official website.

"The principles taught in this class will help them become more productive, more effective and more confident. Every coach has a different leadership style, but their ultimate job is to teach the science and the art of the sport and prepare student athletes for competition, pressure and good citizenship."

Speakers include current Akron Zips head football coach Terry Bowden, Akron head basketball coach Keith Dambrot and former head football coach of Division III Mount Union, Larry Kehres.

Tressel spent 10 years as the head coach of the Buckeyes, winning a national title in 2002 before resigning from his post two years ago due to a scandal involving several of his players.

His desire to coach has waned considerably due to his new responsibilities at Akron, He told Fox Sports Ohio last spring he's "been so busy (he) hasn't been yearning to coach."

On the other hand, Dennison stepped down from coaching and working as an Associate Athletic Director at Walsh University in 2012. All in all, he spent 53 years as a coach and administrator and still owns the distinction as the Akron Zips' all-time winningest football coach (80-62-2) during his 12-year tenure from 1973-85.

Tressel gives Dennison credit for helping him getting his coaching career started off on the right foot.

"He gave me my first opportunity to coach, and he provided guidance that has lasted me a lifetime."

For a good long while, it’s been fashionable to talk about SEC football in terms of passion and tradition and occasionally even religion. (It’s been pretty profitable, too.) It was more fun when he was a player,1 and even m ...
