San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh named Colt McCoy as Colin Kaepernick's official backup on Sunday.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has made it official: Colt McCoy is his backup quarterback.

This was what Harbaugh declared moments after the 49ers' 34-14 preseason victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, per CSN Bay Area. He said,"I feel real good about Colt as the backup quarterback."

McCoy said everything transpired quickly, as he agreed to new contract terms -- a pay cut from his original $1.5 million salary -- just a day before the game.

"It really happened quick. This is a tremendous team. It's well-coached. It's a great organization from top to bottom. And when I was approached. This is personal, but I'm glad to be here. That's new to me. I've never done anything like that. But it's all fine.

"Jim and I had a great week. We talked and met a lot. Between us, I think we figured each other out a lot better."

Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News recalls McCoy got off to a slow start during his first series against the Vikings as he threw an interception. However, he was able to regain his composure after that, producing a field goal and a touchdown.

He admitted he wasn't himself when he first took the field. He said,"I hadn't performed the way I know I can perform -- maybe I was thinking a little too much."

For the game, McCoy was 11 of 15 for 109 yards and an interception.

McCoy was acquired by the 49ers in April when he, together with a sixth-round draft pick, was shipped to San Francisco by his former team, the Cleveland Browns, in exchange for a fifth- and seventh-round draft pick.

His appointment as Colin Kaepernick's backup comes on the heels of an NFL.com report that he might get traded earlier in the day.

NFL Week 8 Picks: Early Predictions for Every Game

Oct 20 2014 7:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

After several Week 7 contests were decided in the waning seconds of action, the remaining weeks of the 2014 season may as well come with a warning label—this kind of excitement isn't for the faint of heart. The NFL continues to provide a very diverse slate of games. While some contests did, indeed, come with breathtaking conclusions, others were just one-sided affairs right out of the gate—although, these we ...

NFL Power Rankings: Initial Post-Sunday Breakdown Ahead of Week 8

Oct 20 2014 6:59am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Week 7 in the NFL taught us a few things. For one, the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning appear ready to challenge for another spot in the Super Bowl. All No. 18 did was set the all-time record for career touchdown passes and absolutely annihilate a solid San Francisco 49ers team. Interestingly, Week 7 also taught us that Manning’s previous team, the Indianapolis Colts, may be the biggest AFC challenger to his eventual Super Bowl s ...

DC Sports Bog: Redskins-Titans best and worst

Oct 19 2014 3:39pm CDT | Source: Washington Post Sports

Best and worst moments from Washington’s 19-17 home win over the Tennessee Titans. Best final drive: Hey, Colt McCoy. Weird. The third-string deploy-only-in-case-of-emergency quarterback came in after halftime, was perfectly competent, and eventually led Washington on a drive for the game-winning field goal. The final drive totaled 76 yards over 10 plays, and included McCoy going 5 for 5 for 38 yards, with another complet ...

Russell Wilson Faked Alec Ogletree Out on This Great 52-Yard Run

Oct 19 2014 2:39pm CDT | Source: The Big Lead

Russell Wilson and the suddenly much-maligned Seattle Seahawks trailed the Rams 21-3 in the first half, and briefly, it appeared as though they could be dropping to 3-3 and they’d have to answer Percy Harvin questions all week. But the Seahawks still have Wilson who enjoys doubling as a magician during football games. Case in point this 3rd and 9 conversion: Wilson pump-faked linebacker Alec Ogletree, who fell for it, and then the QB sped down the sideline for 52 yards. Seattle score ...

College Football Lacks Concussion Policy, Could Lead to Tragedy

The video is tough to watch. Shane Morris staggers after taking a direct hit to his helmet. He collapses, reaching for his teammate to keep him upright. Immediately, his teammates begin waving to the sidelines. Instead of an athletic trainer, Morris, a QB for Michigan, is met by Brady Hoke, the head coach.  Morris was sent back into the game moments later, despite appearing woozy and blinking slowl ...

Jay Gruden says Washington's loss wasn't on Kirk Cousins

Sep 26 2014 7:54am CDT | Source: SBNation

Despite a horrific performance from Kirk Cousins, the first-year head coach is laying blame on the entire team. Washington was humiliated by the New York Giants at FedEx Field on Thursday Night Football, beaten 45-14 to drop their record to 1-3. Perhaps the most embarrassing performance goes to Kirk Cousins, who threw four interceptions and lost a fumble in defeat. After the game, head coach Jay Gruden refused to lay blame for the blowout at the feet of his thir ...

The New Orleans Saints are favorites on the road this week, a spot in which they're just 2-4 straight up, 0-6 against the spread over the last couple of seasons. And their last game against Cleveland ended in a surprising result. Can the Saints avoid an 0-2 start? Or can they hand that fate to the Browns, who are far more accustomed to that record?   Point spread: The Saints opened as 6.5-point favorites; the total was 47.5. (Line updates and matc ...
