San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has made it official: Colt McCoy is his backup quarterback.

This was what Harbaugh declared moments after the 49ers' 34-14 preseason victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, per CSN Bay Area. He said,"I feel real good about Colt as the backup quarterback."

McCoy said everything transpired quickly, as he agreed to new contract terms -- a pay cut from his original $1.5 million salary -- just a day before the game.

"It really happened quick. This is a tremendous team. It's well-coached. It's a great organization from top to bottom. And when I was approached. This is personal, but I'm glad to be here. That's new to me. I've never done anything like that. But it's all fine.

"Jim and I had a great week. We talked and met a lot. Between us, I think we figured each other out a lot better."

Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News recalls McCoy got off to a slow start during his first series against the Vikings as he threw an interception. However, he was able to regain his composure after that, producing a field goal and a touchdown.

He admitted he wasn't himself when he first took the field. He said,"I hadn't performed the way I know I can perform -- maybe I was thinking a little too much."

For the game, McCoy was 11 of 15 for 109 yards and an interception.

McCoy was acquired by the 49ers in April when he, together with a sixth-round draft pick, was shipped to San Francisco by his former team, the Cleveland Browns, in exchange for a fifth- and seventh-round draft pick.

His appointment as Colin Kaepernick's backup comes on the heels of an NFL.com report that he might get traded earlier in the day.
