New Jersey governor Chris Christie isn't exactly endeared by the New York Daily News.

It all started when Chrstie co-hosted WFAN's "Boomer & Carton" morning radio show on Monday. He ripped New York Daily News sports beat writer Manish Mehta for asking New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan if Geno Smith had any realistic shot at being the starting quarterback in spite of his sub-par performance in their preseason game against the New York Giants.

"Idiot. The guy's a complete idiot. Self-consumed, underpaid, reporter...the only way he's empowered is because we're spending all this time talking about Manish Mehta this morning...who, by the way, I couldn't pick out of a lineup and no Jets fan gives a damn about Manish Mehta.

"We shouldn't be giving this dope, you know, the amount of airtime we've given him already."

The tabloid fired back on Monday by running the headline "Who you calling an idiot, fatso!" with a picture of Christie below it.

Jeff Goldman of the Newark Star-Ledger cited some excerpts from New York Daily News columnist Mike Lupica, who called out Christie for his comments about Mehta.

"So Christie, who is expected to run for President in a couple of years, went after (Mahish) Mehta. And showed in the process that he can be just as thin-skinned with reporters asking somebody else questions as he is when they ask him something he doesn't like."

The actual commentary from Lupica also indicates Ryan is Christie's "pal."

In spite of this, Lupica still pays homage to the New Jersey governor by saying he's "great company" when they spent some time talking about baseball at the New York Mets home stadium, Citi Field.

Lupica also writes "how tremendous Christie was in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy."

Sports fans in the states of New York and New Jersey can only hope this controversy comes to a peaceful end.
