Diamond League: Bolt recovers to win

Aug 30 2013, 4:30am CDT | by IANS

Zurich, Aug 30 (IANS/CMC) Usain Bolt recovered from a poor start before sprinting to victory in the 100m at the Zurich Diamond League at the Letzigrund Stadium.

Zurich, Aug 30 (IANS/CMC) Usain Bolt recovered from a poor start before sprinting to victory in the 100m at the Zurich Diamond League at the Letzigrund Stadium.

The six-time Olympic champion began extremely slowly but stormed back late to win in 9.90 seconds, reports CMC.

Bolt finished ahead of teammate Nickel Ashmeade (9.94) and American Justin Gatlin was third in 9.96 seconds.

"I wasn't as fit. The more the season goes, the more tired I get. I'm just trying to get through the season injury free," Bolt told reporters.

"I have to go and prepare, see what I can to do improve my start."

The other Jamaicans Nesta Carter and Kemar Bailey-Cole were sixth and seventh respectively.

Gatlin, although finishing in third place, is the winner of this season's Diamond League 100m title.

Bolt and Gatlin went gold-silver at the World Championships in Moscow earlier this month, where Bolt won in 9.77 to Gatlin's 9.85.

Bolt is expected to race in the Diamond League finale in Brussels, Belgium, Sep 6.

World leader Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was first in the women's 200 metres, sprinting a comfortable 22.40 seconds.

The win makes Fraser-Pryce the female 200m Diamond League champion for 2013.

Mourielle Ahoure from the Ivory Coast, in a repeat of Moscow World Championships, was second in 22.66, while the Ukraine's Mariya Ryemyen was third in 22.67.

American Tiffany Townsend was disqualified after a false start.

Meanwhile, Grenada's Olympic 400 metres champion Kirani James finished a close second to World champion LaShawn Merritt.

Merritt ran into James very early and stayed close to the Grenadian to push ahead close to the finish to win in 44.13 seconds.

James was second in 44.32 and Pavel Maslák of the Czech Republic third in 44.91.

Merritt's win confirms him as the Diamond League 400m title winner this season.

Big-Game Experience Should See Mario Balotelli Get Chance vs. Real Madrid

Oct 22 2014 4:44am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

It has been an incredibly bizarre start to the season for Liverpool. After last season's incredible performance in the Premier League, losing Luis Suarez was always going to make it tough for Brendan Rodgers' side to replicate those heroics. Yet despite barely getting out of second gear all season, they are ahead of the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal in the league table. While Chelsea and Manchester City are streaking away from the rest quicker than Usain Bolt on an Olym ...

Is Lag Slowing Your Swing Down?

Oct 20 2014 1:14pm CDT | Source: GolfWRX

In my last article, “Who is the Greatest Driver of the Ball, Ever?” we introduced the techniques that separate the longest drivers of the golf ball from most amateur and tour players. We established that the turning and thrusting system of the legs, pelvis and torso is the motor and primary energy generator in the golf swing. The supple arms wind tightly up and around this system on the backswing, and then simply react to it and unwin ...

Royals rookie Terrance Gore thinks he’s faster than Usain Bolt — and he’s probably right

Oct 20 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: Washington Post Sports

These are heady days for Terrance Gore, a rookie who will play in his first World Series despite having had all of one official at-bat in the bigs. All because “that’s what speed do,” as their catchphrase puts it. Speed is something Gore, 23, knows all about. He stole 52 bases at Class AAA Omaha and in the majors after his Aug. 31 call-up. During the Royals’ postseason run, Gore has appeared in five games, each ...

Gatlin takes criticism, accolades in stride

Oct 11 2014 1:56pm CDT | Source: Sportsnet.ca

Justin Gatlin is far more interested in winning races than popularity contests. Still, the American sprinter with a doping history doesn’t quite understand the backlash over his nomination for track and field athlete of the year. Gatlin went undefeated in the 100 and 200 metres this season, a year that didn’t include a major meet and one in which Usain Bolt chose to give his nagging injuries time to heal. But Gatl ...
