US Open: Nadal, Federer through, Kvitova, Wozniacki out (Roundup)

Sep 1 2013, 4:04am CDT | by IANS

New York, Sep 1 (IANS) The sixth day of competition at the US Open saw second seed Rafael Nadal and seventh seed Roger Federer advance, while women's singles seventh seed Peta Kvitova and sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki were eliminated from the Flushing Meadows here.

New York, Sep 1 — The sixth day of competition at the US Open saw second seed Rafael Nadal and seventh seed Roger Federer advance, while women's singles seventh seed Peta Kvitova and sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki were eliminated from the Flushing Meadows here.

The 2010 US Open champion Nadal needed just two hours to defeat Ivan Dodig from Croatia 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, keeping the 'no set dropped' record intact to reach the fourth round Saturday, reports Xinhua.

"I think I played a correct match today. Happy with 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 against a player who came to this tournament winning against tough opponents like Davydenko and Verdasco," said Nadal.

The 27-year-old Spaniard missed the 2012 edition because of a knee injury but took home nine ATP titles in a single year, the best among all male players. The owner of 12 Grand Slam titles kept winning to claim titles in Cincinnati and Montreal and entered the US Open with 10-0 record, which has now become 13-0.

"When you are playing well, you have the chance to play more aggressively. I am just trying to adjust small things to be a better player, as I have done all my career," said Nadal, who would meet the winner of the match between John Isner and Philipp Kohlschreiber in the next round.

Seventh seed Federer also enjoyed an easy outing, beating Adrian Mannarino from France 6-3, 6-0, 6-2. Fourth seed David Ferrer, eighth seed Richard Gasquet also advanced to the last 16.

However, the female seeds were less lucky.

Sixth seed Wozniacki won the first set but still lost to 21-year-old Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 while seventh seed Kvitova was beaten by local talent Alison Riske 6-3, 6-0.

It was a perfect day in office for Indians too as Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna, Sania Mirza and Divij Sharan advanced to the third round in their respective groups.

In second round men's doubles action, Paes, Sharan and Bopanna won their respective matches while Sania won her women's doubles tie to move ahead.

The Championships - Wimbledon 2014: Middle Sunday
This is the year of sporty power couples breaking off their engagements. First, it was Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki. That one was weird — golfer McIlroy reportedly broke up with tennis player Woz by telephone. Now, the shoe’s on the other foot, as tennis-er Maria Kirilenko confirmed that she ended her engagement to hockey star Alexander Ovechkin on Sunday. Kirilenko, 27, isn’t a household tennis name at this point (most people probably associate that surname wi ...

Bill Clinton Speaks At AIDS Conference
My Rory McIlroy update app is working overtime these days. He reportedly had a spectator ejected during the British Open; won the event and then was booed while accepting the trophy; won $170K for his dad (on a 10-year-old bet the elder McIlroy made when Rory was 15); and then partied into this morning with family and friends. Featured during the celebration was Rory doing Jagerbombs out of the British Open trophy. Name the drink that’s going into th ...

Jul 21 2014 7:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open - Day Two
Rory McIlroy has won major championships two other times, but his win at the 2014 Open Championship was his biggest.  The 25-year-old led wire-to-wire as he outlasted a strong challenge from Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler. Here's a look at the final leaderboard. As good as McIlroy was during the tournament, he wasn't smart enough to know that he shouldn't mention the fact that he's a Manchester United fan in front of a huge crowd in Liverpool. Well, nobody is perfec ...

143rd Open Championship - Round Four
Sunday’s final round of the British Open began with the widespread expectation that Rory McIlroy would glide to his first triumph at golf’s oldest major. He got there all right, bringing outright elation from a home crowd eager to see someone from the United Kingdom take possession of the Claret Jug, but it was good to see the Northern Irishman get squeezed a little along the way. Amazingly, the ability to win a major with someone nipping at his heels was one of th ...
