Pato eyeing Brazil World Cup spot

Sep 4 2013, 3:19am CDT | by IANS

Rio de Janeiro, Sep 4 (IANS) Alexandre Pato hopes his return to Brazil's football national team for Saturday's friendly against Australia will pave the way for a dream World Cup berth.

Rio de Janeiro, Sep 4 — Alexandre Pato hopes his return to Brazil's football national team for Saturday's friendly against Australia will pave the way for a dream World Cup berth.

Pato has been drafted into Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad for the match at Brasilia's Mane Garrincha stadium after the withdrawal of Fred due to injury, reports Xinhua.

"I feel honoured. I was 17 when I scored my first goal for the national team and started the road to where I am now," Pato said Tuesday.

"Unfortunately there have been some pauses, some injuries that didn't allow me to show my best form. But now I'm back and I'm going to try to hold on to my place until the (2014) World Cup."

Pato's return to the international fold comes after a harrowing three-year period. Injuries forced him out of contention for the 2010 World Cup and he managed just 25 games in the following two seasons for AC Milan before his January move to Corinthians.

After his inauspicious start for the Brazilian club, Pato has found his best form. Arguably his best match of the season came Sunday, when he scored twice in Corinthians' 4-0 win over Flamengo.

He is now intent on repaying Scolari's faith.

"This is what I have been wanting since I came back to Brazil," Pato said.

"My objective has always been to play for my country. I've been able to string some games together and now I'm ready to do my best for the Selecao."

In all walks of life there are turning points. Moments that force you to stop, contemplate what has gone and fundamentally shape the future. On a personal level that kind of event may be marriage, parenthood, achieving a career goal. An occasion that marks the “then” and “now” of an epic journey. For Brazil and their incredibly successful national side, one such moment came on July 8, 2014. On that fateful evening, the five-time world champions suffered ...

Brazil Right to Call Up Born Winner, Champions League Ace Luiz Adriano

Oct 23 2014 12:16pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Luiz Adriano’s Brazil call-up is as sensible as it is richly-deserved. Sensible, for a national side in desperate need of an in-form centre-forward, and richly-deserved, for a player who scored a Champions League quintuple on Wednesday and, at 27, is Shakhtar Donetsk’s record goalscorer. Selecao manager Dunga made the decision on Thursday, as per the Guardian, and also brought the striker’s Shakhtar teammate, Douglas Costa, into the fol ...

Should Brazil Be Looking to the Future Rather Than Thinking About Kaka?

Sep 26 2014 4:03am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

There is a little bit of the old Dunga left, so it would seem. The new Brazil boss has been rightfully praised for introducing a new, or rather discarded, style of play in this month's friendlies against Colombia and Ecuador. On Wednesday evening, however, an old name, a favourite of Dunga's first reign, was brought up in conversation. The Selecao coach was a guest on Fox Sports Brasil's Expedient ...
