The Ottawa Senators named center Jason Spezza as team captain on Saturday.

According to Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun, Spezza is the first Canadian to be named Senators team captain since the honor was passed from Randy Cunneyworth to Alexei Yashin in 1988.

Chris Phillips and Chris Neil were proclaimed as Spezza's assistants.

Spezza couldn't be more excited. He said,"Having the chance to be the captain of an NHL team is a dream every Canadian kid has. And today I get that chance. I'm very excited about it."

He also added he will use his position as team captain to make the entire team as successful as possible.

"The fact I've played here my whole career will give me reason to want to stay, I think. I haven't thought about ever moving on, and now that I'm the captain of the team I want to do as good a job as possible to make us successful as possible.

"I don't think (the contract) plays into anything but I'm defintely happy I'm the captain and excited about the challenge, and I want to make us a winning team."

He takes over the spot vacated by Daniel Alfredsson, who left for the Detroit Red Wings on a one-year, $5.5 million deal.

Senators owner Eugene Melnyk expressed his voted of confidence for Spezza in a statement released by the team.

"Jason has been an intergral member of this franchise for the duration of my time as owner of the club and his passion for the game, his teammates and, above all, his desire to see this team attain ultimate success makes him a great fit to be our next captain."

The 30-year-old Spezza, who becomes the eighth team captain in Senators history, was selected second overall by Ottawa in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He has 228 goals, 393 assists in his career.

Is Brad Richards the No. 2 Centre the Chicago Blackhawks Have Been Waiting For?

Jul 12 2014 4:36pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

For years, the most obvious flaw in a largely exceptional Chicago Blackhawks roster was at centre. Jonathan Toews is a brilliant No. 1 pivot, but the second-line job featured a revolving door of mostly underwhelming candidates. Is Brad Richards the long-awaited solution to that longstanding issue? At first glance, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Richards posted 51 points in 2013-14, which is pretty good production for that slot. It’s his worst season ...

Jul 9 2014 3:40pm CDT | Source: Sportsnet.ca

Signing players to long-term contracts can be risky business for NHL general managers. Even when reliable building blocks such as Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews are locked up to eight-year extensions, it’s worth asking whether the team has made a smart investment. There have been plenty of deals that have worked out in recent years, but there’s also been a few mistakes – see David Clarkson or Dion Phaneuf. With that in mind, here’s a look at five of the best and worst long-term con ...

If you like taking long shots, it never hurts to take them from a long ways out. The Stanley Cup odds for 2015 were released Monday—because when you’re a true degenerate, it’s never too early—and, yes, there’s very little value to be found in betting on favoured teams 12 months away from the final games. All it takes is a couple of injuries, a contract dispute or a coach’s words falling at long last on deaf ears to ...
