The Ottawa Senators named center Jason Spezza as team captain on Saturday.

According to Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun, Spezza is the first Canadian to be named Senators team captain since the honor was passed from Randy Cunneyworth to Alexei Yashin in 1988.

Chris Phillips and Chris Neil were proclaimed as Spezza's assistants.

Spezza couldn't be more excited. He said,"Having the chance to be the captain of an NHL team is a dream every Canadian kid has. And today I get that chance. I'm very excited about it."

He also added he will use his position as team captain to make the entire team as successful as possible.

"The fact I've played here my whole career will give me reason to want to stay, I think. I haven't thought about ever moving on, and now that I'm the captain of the team I want to do as good a job as possible to make us successful as possible.

"I don't think (the contract) plays into anything but I'm defintely happy I'm the captain and excited about the challenge, and I want to make us a winning team."

He takes over the spot vacated by Daniel Alfredsson, who left for the Detroit Red Wings on a one-year, $5.5 million deal.

Senators owner Eugene Melnyk expressed his voted of confidence for Spezza in a statement released by the team.

"Jason has been an intergral member of this franchise for the duration of my time as owner of the club and his passion for the game, his teammates and, above all, his desire to see this team attain ultimate success makes him a great fit to be our next captain."

The 30-year-old Spezza, who becomes the eighth team captain in Senators history, was selected second overall by Ottawa in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He has 228 goals, 393 assists in his career.
