The USC Trojans fired head football coach Lane Kiffin on September 29.

The Lane Kiffin era is officially over at USC.

The USC Trojans' official athletics website released the following statement on September 29:

"Lane Kiffin has been relieved of his duties as USC's head football coach, Trojan athletic director Pat Haden announced early today (Sept. 29).

"Haden informed Kiffin of his termination upon the team's charter's arrival back in Los Angeles early Sunday morning following USC's 62-41 loss at Arizona State.

"Kiffin's Trojans have lost 7 of their past 11 games, USC is 3-2 this year and has lost both of its Pac-12 games. His overall record in 4 years at USC is 28-15.

Haden will hold a press conference at USC on Sunday afternoon at a time and place to be announced."

Haden appointed Ed Orgeron as the Trojans' interim head football coach, per ESPN Los Angeles. Orgeron expressed confidence he and the team will be able to step up.

"I want to tell you we're here as a staff to answer the bell. We're all accountable for what happened as a staff and as players. Us Trojans know how to do it."

For his part, Haden felt the Trojans haven't lived up to the greatness they were known for in years past.

"I haven't felt particularly good even from the Hawaii game. I just felt like we haven't been the consistent team that we need to be at USC. We've played 125 years of some pretty dog-gone good football here at USC. We're just all a piece of the continuum.

"We're going to be playing football 125 years from now. I was just a tiny piece of it, Lane was, Pete Carroll was, and we all add up to this continuum of USC football, and we just realized that our history has been great, and we need to be great again."

The ESPN LA report adds Haden consulted with his advisers when the Arizona State Sun Devils scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter on Saturday. That was when Haden decided to fire Kiffin.

According to Gary Kline of the Los Angeles Times, Kiffin "has been under fire" since the end of the 2012 season, when the Trojans lost their No. 1 ranking and plummeted to a 7-6 overall record.

Kiffin's tenure with USC saw the university being slapped with several severe penalties months after he took the job. Kline reports these penalties, which include two bowl bans and the cancellation of 30 scholarships covering a three-year period, are tied to former running back Reggie Bush.

In Kline's words,"The timing (of Kiffin's firing) also has recruiting ramifications because some top prospects in Southern California reportedly voiced concern about Kiffin's status."

The 38-year old Kiffin coached the NFL's Oakland Raiders from 2007-08 before returning to the collegiate ranks to be the mentor of the Tennessee Volunteers in 2009. He then began his head football coaching tenure in 2010 at USC, earning an estimated $2.6 million in 2011, the "most recent year for which salary figures are available," according to Klein.

Ole Miss player: 'We don't think Bama is as good as they have been'

Sep 28 2014 3:06pm CDT | Source: SBNation

Just what Alabama-Ole Miss needed. No. 2 Alabama travels to No. 11 Ole Miss next Saturday. Probably the biggest game of the season so far. "College GameDay" is making its first-ever trip to Oxford. The winner gets a leg up in maybe the toughest division in college football history. What more could this game possibly need? Oh, that's right. It needs some BULLETIN-BOARD MATERIAL. Ole Miss safety Cody Prewitt obliges: We understand that ...

SEC East Chaos Will Continue with Tennessee's Trip to Georgia

Sep 23 2014 8:32am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

So far this season, the SEC East has been the land of the lost—as every team that has played at least one SEC game has at least one SEC loss. Weird? Maybe, but more chaos is yet to come. If there's one thing we know about Georgia, it's that the Bulldog defense hasn't solved its issues in pass defense the way head coach Mark Richt and new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt would have liked. The Bulldogs are giving u ...

Florida vs. Alabama final score: 3 things we learned from Tide's 42-21 blowout

Sep 20 2014 6:20pm CDT | Source: SBNation

Despite a record-breaking day by Alabama's offense, one of the ugliest Crimson Tide games in recent memory resulted in ... actually, exactly what you expected from this Tide team playing this Florida team. No. 3 Alabama is a definitive 4-0 after plastering the Florida Gators in Tuscaloosa, but not without 30 minutes or so of scares. The Tide did just about everything they could to keep Florida in the game, coughing up four turnovers and making other varieties of mi ...

In Tanner McEvoy, Wisconsin Badgers Get What They Want, Not What They Need

Sep 20 2014 6:04pm CDT | Source: SportsGrid

It’s a good week for Tanner McEvoy. He and the Wisconsin Badgers beat Bowling Green 68-17. McEvoy threw 9-of-16 for 112 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He rushed for a Badger record 158 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. It’s what the Badgers said they wanted — a mobile quarterback. But he completed 33 percent of his passes in the Badgers’ loss to the LSU Tigers. During that game, he didn’t score a rushi ...

Amari Cooper Is College Football's Most Unassuming Superstar

Sep 19 2014 7:10am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Amari Cooper is better than you, and he knows it. “Could you have envisioned the start that you’ve had through the first three weeks?” he was asked on Monday at a routine press conference. “Yeah.” “You talked in the spring about Lane Kiffin and how you’d seen Marqise Lee and you were looking forward to that. Is this that why you anticipated this?” “Yeah, that’s the exact reason.” It’s not arrogance. He was asked, after all, if there was ...

Alabama Football: After 3 Weeks, No Question Blake Sims Should Be the Starter

Sep 17 2014 11:41am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — There was never going to be a bold announcement or proclamation. Nick Saban was never going to hang up a banner or put out a press release announcing who the winner of Alabama’s quarterback competition is. It didn’t happen in 2011. AJ McCarron and Phillip Sims split reps against Kent State, McCarron started and played the whole game against Penn State, and then just…kept starting. And it’s happening this year, too. Blake Sims pla ...

College Football Playoff Threat Watch, Week 3: The only way to lose is to play

Sep 14 2014 6:35am CDT | Source: SBNation

Every time you send your football team onto the field, you run the risk of looking bad. If you look bad, you probably aren't going to make the Playoff. Therefore, you should never send your team onto the field. What We Learned About Alabama's QB Competition in Week 3

Sep 13 2014 9:17pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Three weeks into the 2014 season, Alabama coach Nick Saban has steadfastly refused to name a starting quarterback between Blake Sims and Jake Coker. But following the Crimson Tide’s 52-12 drubbing of Southern Miss, it is clear that Saban really doesn’t need to. Saban and offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin’s division of playing time says it all: Sims is the guy. Sims completed 12 of 17 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns, while Coker hit on five of seven fo ...

Sep 11 2014 10:39am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

It's Not Over Quite Yet Alabama's quarterback battle between senior Blake Sims and junior Jake Coker is still technically ongoing after Coker passed for 202 yards and a touchdown last week against Florida Atlantic. Fans will get to witness another audition this week when the two split time against Southern Miss. “We're making those evaluations on a day-to-day basis,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said on Monday, according to B/R's Marc Torrence. “We're ...
