The USC Trojans fired head football coach Lane Kiffin on September 29.

The Lane Kiffin era is officially over at USC.

The USC Trojans' official athletics website released the following statement on September 29:

"Lane Kiffin has been relieved of his duties as USC's head football coach, Trojan athletic director Pat Haden announced early today (Sept. 29).

"Haden informed Kiffin of his termination upon the team's charter's arrival back in Los Angeles early Sunday morning following USC's 62-41 loss at Arizona State.

"Kiffin's Trojans have lost 7 of their past 11 games, USC is 3-2 this year and has lost both of its Pac-12 games. His overall record in 4 years at USC is 28-15.

Haden will hold a press conference at USC on Sunday afternoon at a time and place to be announced."

Haden appointed Ed Orgeron as the Trojans' interim head football coach, per ESPN Los Angeles. Orgeron expressed confidence he and the team will be able to step up.

"I want to tell you we're here as a staff to answer the bell. We're all accountable for what happened as a staff and as players. Us Trojans know how to do it."

For his part, Haden felt the Trojans haven't lived up to the greatness they were known for in years past.

"I haven't felt particularly good even from the Hawaii game. I just felt like we haven't been the consistent team that we need to be at USC. We've played 125 years of some pretty dog-gone good football here at USC. We're just all a piece of the continuum.

"We're going to be playing football 125 years from now. I was just a tiny piece of it, Lane was, Pete Carroll was, and we all add up to this continuum of USC football, and we just realized that our history has been great, and we need to be great again."

The ESPN LA report adds Haden consulted with his advisers when the Arizona State Sun Devils scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter on Saturday. That was when Haden decided to fire Kiffin.

According to Gary Kline of the Los Angeles Times, Kiffin "has been under fire" since the end of the 2012 season, when the Trojans lost their No. 1 ranking and plummeted to a 7-6 overall record.

Kiffin's tenure with USC saw the university being slapped with several severe penalties months after he took the job. Kline reports these penalties, which include two bowl bans and the cancellation of 30 scholarships covering a three-year period, are tied to former running back Reggie Bush.

In Kline's words,"The timing (of Kiffin's firing) also has recruiting ramifications because some top prospects in Southern California reportedly voiced concern about Kiffin's status."

The 38-year old Kiffin coached the NFL's Oakland Raiders from 2007-08 before returning to the collegiate ranks to be the mentor of the Tennessee Volunteers in 2009. He then began his head football coaching tenure in 2010 at USC, earning an estimated $2.6 million in 2011, the "most recent year for which salary figures are available," according to Klein.

Bowl Projections: Predicting College Football Playoff Matchups After Week 10

Nov 4 2014 10:29pm CST | Source: Bleacher Report

The weird thing about the College Football Playoff committee issuing a poll every week is how weirdly unnecessary it'll all seem in a few weeks. In the BCS system, polling mattered. Only two teams were going to get a chance to play for a national championship, and everyone needed a look to see how this convoluted formula worked. There is no convoluted formula in the playoff system. There are 12 people in a room coming to a consensus, not unlike the se ...

College Football's Giants Have Lost Their Intimidation Factor

Nov 4 2014 9:37pm CST | Source: Bleacher Report

When Alabama plays at Louisiana State on Saturday the X factor won’t be how loudly Nick Saban growls on the sideline or how many trick plays Les Miles calls. No, the unmanageable intangible will be Tiger Stadium, and the non-stop wall of noise the Crimson Tide will have to battle at the place known as Death Valley. Ole Miss experienced the building’s lethal aspects two weeks ago, falling 10-7 to LSU in a game that led Rebels quarterback Bo Wallace to s ...

LSU Football: Tigers' Road to Making the College Football Playoff

Oct 28 2014 8:48pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

LSU has a chance, albeit slight, to make the College Football Playoff.  Despite the Tigers' losses against Mississippi State and Auburn, they can still go unbeaten the rest of the way and have a shot at making the top four. But that is only if LSU gets plenty of help elsewhere. The first set of rankings from the College Football Playoff Committee were announced Tuesday night. Three SEC teams were controversially included in the top four, ...

College Football Odds and Sods: LSU is Tough, Michigan is Delusional

Oct 27 2014 11:42am CDT | Source: The Big Lead

LSU beat Ole Miss 10-7. Conventional wisdom, congealed in rankings, suggests it was an upset. #Narrative rambles on about Tiger Stadium at night being the place where dreams go to die. Reality indicates what may be the 5th best team in the SEC West can beat any of the top four. The Rebels losing should not have surprised. Ole Miss edged Bama at home. They have not done much else. While that defense passes muster, the offense has been erratic. The Rebels don’t run the ball well (12th in yar ...

The weeks continue, but the battle for the four coveted College Football Playoff spots gets only murkier. With revised college football Top 25 polls coming Sunday afternoon, let's take an instant look at how last week's top six fared this weekend. The most noteworthy change will have something to do with Ole Miss falling at LSU, 10-7, but how far do you drop the No. 3 Rebels, considering they've already bea ...

Alabama vs. Tennessee: Score and Twitter Reaction

Oct 25 2014 10:15pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

In a game that was personal for both sides, Alabama escaped Knoxville with a win over Tennessee, 34-20, to make its case as the best one-loss team in the country. A week after blowing out Texas A&M 59-0, the Crimson Tide made another strong statement against the Volunteers. If Bama has any chance of making the first-ever College Football Playoff, it will need to continue the run after visiting Knoxville. Blake Sims and Amari Cooper spear ...
