The USC Trojans fired head football coach Lane Kiffin on September 29.

The Lane Kiffin era is officially over at USC.

The USC Trojans' official athletics website released the following statement on September 29:

"Lane Kiffin has been relieved of his duties as USC's head football coach, Trojan athletic director Pat Haden announced early today (Sept. 29).

"Haden informed Kiffin of his termination upon the team's charter's arrival back in Los Angeles early Sunday morning following USC's 62-41 loss at Arizona State.

"Kiffin's Trojans have lost 7 of their past 11 games, USC is 3-2 this year and has lost both of its Pac-12 games. His overall record in 4 years at USC is 28-15.

Haden will hold a press conference at USC on Sunday afternoon at a time and place to be announced."

Haden appointed Ed Orgeron as the Trojans' interim head football coach, per ESPN Los Angeles. Orgeron expressed confidence he and the team will be able to step up.

"I want to tell you we're here as a staff to answer the bell. We're all accountable for what happened as a staff and as players. Us Trojans know how to do it."

For his part, Haden felt the Trojans haven't lived up to the greatness they were known for in years past.

"I haven't felt particularly good even from the Hawaii game. I just felt like we haven't been the consistent team that we need to be at USC. We've played 125 years of some pretty dog-gone good football here at USC. We're just all a piece of the continuum.

"We're going to be playing football 125 years from now. I was just a tiny piece of it, Lane was, Pete Carroll was, and we all add up to this continuum of USC football, and we just realized that our history has been great, and we need to be great again."

The ESPN LA report adds Haden consulted with his advisers when the Arizona State Sun Devils scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter on Saturday. That was when Haden decided to fire Kiffin.

According to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, Kiffin "has been under fire" since the end of the 2012 season, when the Trojans lost their No. 1 ranking and plummeted to a 7-6 overall record.

Kiffin's tenure with USC saw the university being slapped with several severe penalties months after he took the job. Klein reports these penalties, which include two bowl bans and the cancellation of 30 scholarships covering a three-year period, are tied to former running back Reggie Bush.

In Klein's words,"The timing (of Kiffin's firing) also has recruiting ramifications because some top prospects in Southern California reportedly voiced concern about Kiffin's status."

The 38-year old Kiffin coached the NFL's Oakland Raiders from 2007-08 before returning to the collegiate ranks to be the mentor of the Tennessee Volunteers in 2009. He then began his head football coaching tenure in 2010 at USC, earning an estimated $2.6 million in 2011, the "most recent year for which salary figures are available," according to Klein.

What We Learned About Alabama's QB Competition in Week 3

Sep 13 2014 9:17pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Three weeks into the 2014 season, Alabama coach Nick Saban has steadfastly refused to name a starting quarterback between Blake Sims and Jake Coker. But following the Crimson Tide’s 52-12 drubbing of Southern Miss, it is clear that Saban really doesn’t need to. Saban and offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin’s division of playing time says it all: Sims is the guy. Sims completed 12 of 17 passes for 168 yards and ...

Jake Coker's Upside Is Obvious in Week 2, but He Is Still Not Ready

Sep 6 2014 2:48pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Jake Coker will be Alabama's starting quarterback, it's just a matter of "when." The much-discussed transfer from Florida State, finally got meaningful snaps in Alabama's 41-0 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa. Splitting time with starter Blake Sims, Coker completed 15-of-24 passes for 202 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Grading the Top 5 College Football Offenses Heading into Week 2

Sep 3 2014 12:54pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Typically, Week 1 is a cupcake-fest for the best teams in college football, allowing the top offenses to post numbers that (even by their standards) stick out as a little too gaudy. This year, however, four of the five best projected offenses in the country (per the F/+ projections at Football Outsiders) matched up with an FBS opponent, three matched up with a power-conference opponent and one even matched up with a ranked opponent. This allowed a better early look than usual at the stat ...

College Football Odds and Sods: Week One

Sep 2 2014 11:09am CDT | Source: The Big Lead

College Football’s first weekend was not so eventful. But it almost was. Games that seemed like a fait accompli, after eight months of talking, proved not to be. World outlooks weren’t nuked. But, had a few plays gone differently, they could have been. It was a week of impressive showings and moral victories. Oklahoma State crawled out of the shell craters and kept it within a touchdown against Florida ...

Derrick Henry Deserves to Be Lead Running Back in Nick Saban's System

Aug 30 2014 9:03pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Alabama clearly has an embarrassment of riches at running back, with Derrick Henry and T.J. Yeldon all set to dish out plenty of punishment to college defenses in 2014. The pair combined for 239 yards and three touchdowns in the Crimson Tide's 33-23 victory over West Virginia University on Saturday. Head coach Nick Saban always seems to have two exemplary running backs under his command to take turns mowing down opposing defenses. It's a strategy that has brought Al ...
