The USC Trojans fired head football coach Lane Kiffin on September 29.

The Lane Kiffin era is officially over at USC.

The USC Trojans' official athletics website released the following statement on September 29:

"Lane Kiffin has been relieved of his duties as USC's head football coach, Trojan athletic director Pat Haden announced early today (Sept. 29).

"Haden informed Kiffin of his termination upon the team's charter's arrival back in Los Angeles early Sunday morning following USC's 62-41 loss at Arizona State.

"Kiffin's Trojans have lost 7 of their past 11 games, USC is 3-2 this year and has lost both of its Pac-12 games. His overall record in 4 years at USC is 28-15.

Haden will hold a press conference at USC on Sunday afternoon at a time and place to be announced."

Haden appointed Ed Orgeron as the Trojans' interim head football coach, per ESPN Los Angeles. Orgeron expressed confidence he and the team will be able to step up.

"I want to tell you we're here as a staff to answer the bell. We're all accountable for what happened as a staff and as players. Us Trojans know how to do it."

For his part, Haden felt the Trojans haven't lived up to the greatness they were known for in years past.

"I haven't felt particularly good even from the Hawaii game. I just felt like we haven't been the consistent team that we need to be at USC. We've played 125 years of some pretty dog-gone good football here at USC. We're just all a piece of the continuum.

"We're going to be playing football 125 years from now. I was just a tiny piece of it, Lane was, Pete Carroll was, and we all add up to this continuum of USC football, and we just realized that our history has been great, and we need to be great again."

The ESPN LA report adds Haden consulted with his advisers when the Arizona State Sun Devils scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter on Saturday. That was when Haden decided to fire Kiffin.

According to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, Kiffin "has been under fire" since the end of the 2012 season, when the Trojans lost their No. 1 ranking and plummeted to a 7-6 overall record.

Kiffin's tenure with USC saw the university being slapped with several severe penalties months after he took the job. Klein reports these penalties, which include two bowl bans and the cancellation of 30 scholarships covering a three-year period, are tied to former running back Reggie Bush.

In Klein's words,"The timing (of Kiffin's firing) also has recruiting ramifications because some top prospects in Southern California reportedly voiced concern about Kiffin's status."

The 38-year old Kiffin coached the NFL's Oakland Raiders from 2007-08 before returning to the collegiate ranks to be the mentor of the Tennessee Volunteers in 2009. He then began his head football coaching tenure in 2010 at USC, earning an estimated $2.6 million in 2011, the "most recent year for which salary figures are available," according to Klein.

College Football Odds and Sods: Starkville is the Epicenter, Dan Mullen is the Alpha Dog

Oct 13 2014 11:25am CDT | Source: The Big Lead

The Magnolia teams are for real, everyone. No letdowns. Mississippi State hosted GameDay and fed from the energy, dumping Auburn 38-23 at home in a partial sloppy monsoon. Following a third emphatic win over a Top 10 divisional opponent, the Bulldogs have vaulted to No. 1 in both polls. Dak Prescott, after slogging it out for 121 yards on the ground, may be the Heisman front runner. College football’s epicenter is in Starkville, but for ...

Can anybody score on this defense? In a game between the SEC's top defense and the SEC's top offense, defense reigned supreme. The Ole Miss Rebels dominated the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station Saturday, shutting down Kevin Sumlin's prolific offense en route to a 35-20 victory. AJ McCarron Off-Base in Criticism of Nick Saban, Alabama Offense

Oct 8 2014 1:04pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

One loss has created plenty of drama at Alabama, and some of it is coming from a highly decorated former Crimson Tide quarterback. AJ McCarron—he of three national titles and two as a starting quarterback—told Ryan Fowler of Tide 99.1 in Tuscaloosa that this particular Crimson Tide team lacks the leadership that previous Crimson Tide teams had, including in McCarron's final season in 2013 (the first and second segments of the interview are available onlin ...

AJ McCarron criticizes Alabama offense after Ole Miss loss

Oct 8 2014 10:02am CDT | Source: SBNation

The former Tide quarterback has some recommendations for Lane Kiffin and Blake Sims. Times are tough in Tuscaloosa. Alabama is alone in fifth place in the SEC West (no, really), and the Tide's margin for error in the Playoff race has all but evaporated after a 23-17 loss to Ole Miss. In the resultant sturm und drang, Alabama fans have been second-guessing virtually everything about the program— ...

Former Alabama QB AJ McCarron Says Tide Lack 'True Leaders'

Oct 8 2014 9:10am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron went on the radio Tuesday and said a bunch of things to make Alabama fans angry, continuing a trend he started in the offseason. (Apparently, backing up Andy Dalton and Jason Campbell in Cincinnati is not taking up too much of his time.) Speaking his mind after the Crimson Tide lost their first game of the season at Ole Miss, McCarron questioned the leadership on the current roster. "I think one of the things that this team is lacking that hurts t ...

Oct 4 2014 6:14pm CDT | Source: SBNation

The Rebels are 5-0 for the first time since the John F. Kennedy administration, says Verne Lundquist. "College GameDay" for the first time ever. The Grove. No. 3 Alabama in the house. Celebrities in the house. Possibly insane celebrities in the house. Massive recruiting stakes. The highest expectations and hopes for Oxford in decades. And the No. 11 Rebels delivered. Ole Miss is now 5-0, 2-0 in the SEC. The Rebels are assured of their highest AP ranking since at least 200 ...

Can the Rebels show they're for real, or will the Tide remind us they're still the boss?
