The USC Trojans fired head football coach Lane Kiffin on September 29.

The Lane Kiffin era is officially over at USC.

The USC Trojans' official athletics website released the following statement on September 29:

"Lane Kiffin has been relieved of his duties as USC's head football coach, Trojan athletic director Pat Haden announced early today (Sept. 29).

"Haden informed Kiffin of his termination upon the team's charter's arrival back in Los Angeles early Sunday morning following USC's 62-41 loss at Arizona State.

"Kiffin's Trojans have lost 7 of their past 11 games, USC is 3-2 this year and has lost both of its Pac-12 games. His overall record in 4 years at USC is 28-15.

Haden will hold a press conference at USC on Sunday afternoon at a time and place to be announced."

Haden appointed Ed Orgeron as the Trojans' interim head football coach, per ESPN Los Angeles. Orgeron expressed confidence he and the team will be able to step up.

"I want to tell you we're here as a staff to answer the bell. We're all accountable for what happened as a staff and as players. Us Trojans know how to do it."

For his part, Haden felt the Trojans haven't lived up to the greatness they were known for in years past.

"I haven't felt particularly good even from the Hawaii game. I just felt like we haven't been the consistent team that we need to be at USC. We've played 125 years of some pretty dog-gone good football here at USC. We're just all a piece of the continuum.

"We're going to be playing football 125 years from now. I was just a tiny piece of it, Lane was, Pete Carroll was, and we all add up to this continuum of USC football, and we just realized that our history has been great, and we need to be great again."

The ESPN LA report adds Haden consulted with his advisers when the Arizona State Sun Devils scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter on Saturday. That was when Haden decided to fire Kiffin.

According to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, Kiffin "has been under fire" since the end of the 2012 season, when the Trojans lost their No. 1 ranking and plummeted to a 7-6 overall record.

Kiffin's tenure with USC saw the university being slapped with several severe penalties months after he took the job. Klein reports these penalties, which include two bowl bans and the cancellation of 30 scholarships covering a three-year period, are tied to former running back Reggie Bush.

In Klein's words,"The timing (of Kiffin's firing) also has recruiting ramifications because some top prospects in Southern California reportedly voiced concern about Kiffin's status."

The 38-year old Kiffin coached the NFL's Oakland Raiders from 2007-08 before returning to the collegiate ranks to be the mentor of the Tennessee Volunteers in 2009. He then began his head football coaching tenure in 2010 at USC, earning an estimated $2.6 million in 2011, the "most recent year for which salary figures are available," according to Klein.

Alabama Football: Depth Chart Analysis, Complete 2014 Preview and Predictions

Aug 22 2014 12:16pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The theme for the Alabama football team is pretty straightforward this year: get back to the top. Two losses to end the 2013 season, including a heartbreaker to their in-state rival that knocked them out of the national title picture, have left the Crimson Tide with a bad taste in their mouth. The idea of revenge has been on the team’s mind since it left New Orleans after an uninspiring 45-31 Sugar Bowl loss to Oklahoma. Another ...

Alabama Football: Don't Sleep on Kenyan Drake in 2014

Aug 19 2014 11:44am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Much has been made about Alabama’s vaunted backfield this offseason. There’s T.J. Yeldon, the returning starter who’s rushed for more than 1,000 yards in both of his first two seasons on campus and has a good chance at breaking Alabama’s career rushing record. And there’s sophomore Derrick Henry, a 6’3”, 241-pound beast of a human who, in his first significant game action of the season, rushed eight t ...

Why Recent Recruiting Losses Shouldn't Worry Crimson Tide Fans

Aug 18 2014 1:18pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The script flipped for Alabama this past weekend, as a pair of SEC opponents plucked two prized prospects from the Crimson Tide's clutches. Well on his way to an unprecedented fifth straight No. 1 recruiting class, head coach Nick Saban certainly won't wallow in despair about the duo's sudden departure. Supporters of the team in Tuscaloosa and beyond should adopt a similar attitude after experiencing a slight—and rare—step backward on the recruiting tr ...

The big 2014 Alabama football guide: A few questions ... and lots of answers

Aug 15 2014 8:00am CDT | Source: SBNation

For all of the talk of Alabama's weaknesses and Nick Saban's struggle against the hurry-up, it still took a miracle finish to keep the Tide out of the SEC Championship. And it might take a similar level of misfortune to keep them out of the Playoff. .m-sbnation-2014-college-football-countdown { display: block; width: 100%; } .m-sbnation-2014-college-football-countdown img { max-width: 100%; } C ...

Alabama Football: How OJ Howard Will Be Matchup Nightmare for SEC in 2014

Aug 13 2014 1:00pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — O.J. Howard is giving up Snickers. The Alabama tight end said it’s part of a personal focus for him on eating right, to gain weight and to help it stay there. He said he used to eat two of them a night. The only problem is what he’s replacing it with. “Ice cream, to be honest with you,” he said. “I had to do something else.” That doesn’t quite add up, but neither does a 6’6”, 240-pound human running this fast: Much has been made about Howard’s size and athleticism. Stil ...

Alabama Football: Week 1 Fall Camp Stock Report

Aug 8 2014 11:10am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Nick Saban’s point was so strong, he wanted to make it twice. He made his bold statement once last Friday at the start of fall camp, and then again two days later: “The time is now to resurrect the identity of the Alabama football program.” That’s been the theme so far after the first week of fall camp and will likely be the theme continuing into the 2014 season. The Crimson Tide have plenty of question marks and storylines this fall. The stock report will hit ...

2014 College Football Rankings: Most Underrated Teams in Opening Coaches Poll

Jul 31 2014 9:22pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The college football preseason polls are fun for debate, but they often look foolish by the end of the season. A year ago at this time, Florida State was not considered a top-10 team and Auburn did not even get a vote in the AP Poll. By January, these two teams were competing for the national championship, which was eventually won by the Seminoles. While Florida State will not sneak up on anyone this seaso ...

Alabama Football: Realistic Expectations for Derrick Henry in 2014

Jul 24 2014 11:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Have you heard the one about Derrick Henry? Superman wears Derrick Henry pajamas to bed. The Boogeyman checks under his bed for Derrick Henry before he goes to sleep at night. In many Alabama circles, the rising sophomore running back from Yulee, Florida, has already risen to legend status after his Sugar Bowl performance that included this now-famous stat line: eight carries, 100 yards, one touchdown, one catch, 63 y ...
