Denver Broncos defensive coordinator and former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio has emerged as a favorite to succeed Lane Kiffin as USC Trojans mentor.

Could Jack Del Rio possibly be the next USC Trojans head football coach?

Del Rio, who is currently the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator, hasn't left Denver yet and is highly vouched for by his boss, Broncos coach John Fox. According to Lindsay H. Jones of USA Today Sports, Fox quipped Del Rio is "definitely qualified" to take on the Trojans job.

Jones points out there are several Internet rumors saying Del Rio was spotted at Los Angeles International Airport but Fox promptly refuted these hearsays.

He said,"He wasn't at LAX. I was actually with him at Del Frisco's when that came out."

Del Frisco's is an "upscale steakhouse," per Jones, who adds Del Rio and Fox go a long way back, dating to their days with the Carolina Panthers when Fox was the head coach and Del Rio was defensive coordinator.

The Denver Post reported on September 30 that Del Rio will work through the 2013 NFL season and finish his contract with the Broncos, virtually ending speculation he will leave for USC anytime soon.

The report cites two Broncos sources who said "the team would not allow Del Rio out of his contract until it expires in February." Even if he doesn't get the USC job, he will still be a strong candidate for other NFL head coaching jobs that will be open.

The Trojans fired Kiffin on Sunday, less than six hours after the team lost 62-41 to the Arizona State Sun Devils. USC athletic director Pat Haden consulted with his advisers and made the decision after the Sun Devils scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter.

USC was 3-2 when Kiffin, who finished 28-15 overall, was dismissed.

Mile High Report Mailbag: Wizard of Oz edition

Aug 28 2014 3:00pm CDT | Source: milehighreport

This week I'll be discussing the ability of Brock Osweiler, DeMarcus Ware's playing time, and the 2nd most important Bronco. @Bronco_Mike251 what do you think the ceiling is for Brock Osweiler, average QB to top 5 QB, or somewhere in between. — Adam (@immaquasimodo) August 27, 2014 Speaking right now, Brock could step in and I believe fall into the top 1/3 of the league when ...

Denver Broncos: Why They Are Equipped to Replace Danny Trevathan

Aug 17 2014 12:17am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Last year, Denver Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan was irreplaceable. During the playoffs, with star pass-rusher Von Miller out, middle linebacker Wesley Woodyard struggling and aging veteran Paris Lenon being forced into action, Trevathan shined. According to Pro Football Focus, he posted a cumulative playoff grade of plus-5.6 , and he combined for three interceptions, two sacks and 56 tackles in the games in which Von Miller missed all ...

2014 Denver Broncos training camp: The final Kaptain's Log

Aug 15 2014 2:55pm CDT | Source: milehighreport

Practice report: Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end... The last day of the 2014 Denver Broncos training camp brings a sense of finality for me. Camp has been good and even better that I had the opportunity to work the sidelines as a credentialed member of the media. It is an experience I am unlikely to forget anytime soon. The weather cooperates and the temperature is somewhat cooler than some of the earlier practices. As I chart the player attendance this ...

What do NFL coaches look for during the preseason?

Aug 6 2014 5:22pm CDT | Source: milehighreport

Quotes from football coaching symposiums shed some light on what the exhibition games mean to NFL coaches. It's well known many fans dislike the preseason but those who do pay attention to it go in with some goals for their team. We know what we are looking for or we have a player, or players, we are excited to see in game. But coaches view the preseason slightly differently, while they obviously like to see their whole team play well, before ea ...

Denver Broncos Sleeper: Expectations for Quanterus Smith

Aug 1 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Denver Broncos have no problem taking a chance on a player returning from injury. That’s what they did when they selected defensive end Quanterus Smith in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL draft. This is the team that waited patiently for tight end Julius Thomas to get healthy. Their patience paid off last year as Thomas became a star. They showed patience again when dealing with safety Quinton Carter. He’s finally healthy, and Cart ...

How the Denver Broncos Have Changed for the Better This Offseason

Jul 31 2014 1:26pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

In last year’s Super Bowl, the Seattle Seahawks exposed a tremendous flaw in what had been a juggernaut of an offensive team during the regular season. The Denver Broncos, despite their record-breaking numbers, were woefully one-dimensional en route to a 43-8 route in Super Bowl XLVIII. Again, look at that score (and the record-breaking numbers). The Seahawks dismantled that offense with a strong d ...

Safety T.J Ward making an early impression on his teammates and coaches

Jul 29 2014 12:00pm CDT | Source: milehighreport

T.J Ward has added an element of physicality and toughness to the Broncos defense. While the signings of defensive end DeMarcus Ware, cornerback Aqib Talib, and receiver Emmanuel Sanders is getting much of the attention, the signing of T.J Ward might have the greatest impact on the 2014 Denver Broncos. The Broncos had their first padded practice of 2014 on Saturday, and Ward's toughness, and physicality is evide ...

Von Miller cuts weight, wants to bounce back

Jul 26 2014 4:13pm CDT | Source: Sportsnet.ca

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Von Miller wants to forget about last season, not just the way it began with a drug suspension and ended with a torn ACL but also how he experimented with packing on too much muscle. He’s dropped at least 25 pounds, saying, "a Ferrari isn’t built to carry luggage to and from the airport." "You just want to be light, streamlined and that’s just what I’m trying to get to," said Miller, who’s back in the 240s like he was ...
