The Oakland Raiders have released backup quarterback Matt Flynn

Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated first broke the news. It was then verified by a league source to CSN California before the Raiders issued a statement about Flynn's dismissal from the team

Terrelle Pryor's play under center plus Flynn's horrid play in a 24-14, Week 4 loss to the Washington Redskins all but sealed the latter's fate, per CSN Bay Area's Scott Bair, who was able to get Raiders head coach Dennis Allen's thoughts on the matter.

"I don't know exactly what the reason was for why it didn't work. It just didn't work. Terrelle came in and took over the job. He's earned the position that he's in. We felt like it was best to move on from that."

In that game, Flynn threw a pick-six, lost a fumble and was sacked seven times.

NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal writes Allen "was harshly critical of Flynn after the (Redskins) game and then demoted him to No. 3 on the depth chart, behind undrafted rookie Matthew McGloin."

Rosenthal also cites his colleague Ian Rapoport, who says former Houston Texans and New York Giants quarterback David Carr as well as Pat White are in Oakland for a workout with the Raiders.

Raiders free safety Charles Woodson chimed in on Flynn's release, per Jerry McDonald of InsideBayArea.com.

"When Flynn got another opportunity last week and wasn't able to deliver, I think they just weren't able to deal with it. It just kind of mounted up against him, and it didn't work out."

Rosenthal labeled the development as "embarrassing" for Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie, who gave up a fifth-round pick in 2014 and more than $6 million in salary to obtain Flynn's services.

Derek Carr Has Given Raiders Reason to Name Him Starting QB over Matt Schaub

Aug 29 2014 12:58am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Start the Carr. It doesn’t get any more obvious. After Thursday’s impressive performance against the defending Super Bowl champions, rookie Derek Carr has done everything he can do to force the Oakland Raiders to make him the starting quarterback Week 1 versus the New York Jets. Head coach Dennis Allen attempted to avoid a quarterback controversy by naming Matt Schaub his starting quarterback, but by sticking with him now, he’s only delaying the inevitable.   When the Raiders selected Car ...

Derek Carr Deserves Starting Nod over Matt Schaub After Preseason Performance

Aug 29 2014 12:50am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Preseason games don't count, but Derek Carr's dominant display against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night gives the Oakland Raiders a worthy excuse to jettison Matt Schaub as their starting quarterback. In the fourth and final exhibition content, Oakland reached the end zone in all four of Carr's series. He finished his night with 143 yards and three touchdowns, completing 84 percent of ...

Jimmy Garoppolo's Strong Preseason Not Enough for Patriots to Cut Ryan Mallett

Aug 28 2014 11:05pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

After a few strong preseason performances, New England Patriots rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had begun to earn the nickname "Jimmy Gameday." After struggling in the Patriots' 16-13 loss to the New York Giants, perhaps we should just stick with "rookie" for the time being. Garoppolo looked promising for a stretch, but it is simply too early to trust him with the keys to the car in the event that Tom Brady should miss any amou ...

Oakland Raiders QB Matt Schaub Stuck In No-Win Situation

Aug 27 2014 12:04am CDT | Source: Rant Sports

Shockingly enough, some folks out there don’t seem to like Oakland Raiders QB Matt Schaub very much. When Schaub missed a couple of practices with elbow tendinitis, his detractors, across dozens of articles, began drawing the obvious – and completely ridiculous – comparison between Schaub and last season’s QB experiment gone wrong, Matt Flynn. […] ...

Michael Sam Doing Everything Right, but It Might Not Be Enough to Make His Mark

Aug 16 2014 7:46pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Green Bay Packers were deep in the St. Louis Rams' end of the field, threatening to score another touchdown and put the game out of reach. A holding penalty and a dropped pass set up a 3rd-and-19, though, and everyone on the field knew Packers quarterback Matt Flynn would have to air it out. St. Louis Rams defensive end Michael Sam knew it was time. Opportunities like this come so rarely for players like Sam. They get so few reps in today's shorter, one-a-da ...
