The Oakland Raiders have released backup quarterback Matt Flynn

Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated first broke the news. It was then verified by a league source to CSN California before the Raiders issued a statement about Flynn's dismissal from the team

Terrelle Pryor's play under center plus Flynn's horrid play in a 24-14, Week 4 loss to the Washington Redskins all but sealed the latter's fate, per CSN Bay Area's Scott Bair, who was able to get Raiders head coach Dennis Allen's thoughts on the matter.

"I don't know exactly what the reason was for why it didn't work. It just didn't work. Terrelle came in and took over the job. He's earned the position that he's in. We felt like it was best to move on from that."

In that game, Flynn threw a pick-six, lost a fumble and was sacked seven times.

NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal writes Allen "was harshly critical of Flynn after the (Redskins) game and then demoted him to No. 3 on the depth chart, behind undrafted rookie Matthew McGloin."

Rosenthal also cites his colleague Ian Rapoport, who says former Houston Texans and New York Giants quarterback David Carr as well as Pat White are in Oakland for a workout with the Raiders.

Raiders free safety Charles Woodson chimed in on Flynn's release, per Jerry McDonald of InsideBayArea.com.

"When Flynn got another opportunity last week and wasn't able to deliver, I think they just weren't able to deal with it. It just kind of mounted up against him, and it didn't work out."

Rosenthal labeled the development as "embarrassing" for Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie, who gave up a fifth-round pick in 2014 and more than $6 million in salary to obtain Flynn's services.

Schaub looks for fresh start as Raiders QB

Jul 29 2014 1:07pm CDT | Source: Sportsnet.ca

NAPA, Calif. — The anointed starting quarterback for the Oakland Raiders is strengthening his hold on the position this training camp instead of losing it. Matt Schaub is showing signs that last year’s disastrous season in Houston might have been an aberration as he looks in complete command as Oakland’s starter. The performance comes in stark contrast to what happened with Matt Flynn last summer. Acquired to be the starter in the off-season, Flynn lacked the necessary arm strength in ...

Vikings Must Continue Making Teddy Bridgewater Truly Earn Starting QB Gig

Jul 28 2014 11:24am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

As the superlatives trickle out of Mankato, Minnesota, temptation may arise to anoint rookie Teddy Bridgewater as the Vikings' starting quarterback—and sooner rather than later.  But despite Bridgewater's strong start at training camp, the Vikings have an established plan at quarterback, and they will be smart to stick with it throughout the next month. Any true competition can't be won or lost during the first few days of camp.  According to Jay Gl ...

Why Jordy Nelson is the NFL's Most Grossly Underrated Player

Jul 26 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The ESPN text alert regarding Jordy Nelson's desire for a deal worth $10 million per season said it all Thursday afternoon.  "Packers receiver Jordy Nelson (zero Pro Bowls) seeking contract of at least $10 million per season," read the alert, which preceded a report from ESPN.com's Rob Demovsky detailing Nelson's wish to become the ninth active receiver to have a contract averaging at least $10 million per season.  Without explicitly sa ...

Can Derek Carr Take the Starting QB Job in Oakland in Rookie Season?

Jun 11 2014 8:50am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Oakland Raiders haven’t had a winning season since 2002. One big reason for that painful truth has been the team’s inability to find a franchise quarterback since the retirement of Rich Gannon. No matter how improved the defense or offensive line is in 2014, the play of the team's starting quarterback is going to dictate how the Raiders perform. If the Raiders get bad play from their starting quarterback, they may ...
