US send Jamaica out of FIFA World Cup

Oct 12 2013, 7:18am CDT | by IANS

Kansas City, Oct 12 (IANS/CMC) Jamaica's dream of qualifying for next year's football World Cup in Brazil ended with a 0-2 defeat against the US Friday night.

Kansas City, Oct 12 (IANS/CMC) Jamaica's dream of qualifying for next year's football World Cup in Brazil ended with a 0-2 defeat against the US Friday night.

Second half goals from midfielder Graham Zusi and forward Jozy Altidore rocked Jamaica after both teams were tied nil-all after an evenly contested first half at Sporting Park.

Jamaica pressed the attack in the opening minutes, dominating possession and pestering goalkeeper Tim Howard.

But the Americans turned up the heat in the second half and finally broke through with 13 minutes left in the game.

Zusi, a halftime substitute for Landon Donovan, delighted his hometown fans, cutting a low shot into the lower left corner off an assist from Alejandro Bedoya.

Altidore sealed Jamaica's fate with an 81st-minute goal, easily finishing a left-footed shot into a wide open net after Edgar Castillo calmly crossed the ball in from the left side with a rolling pass just above the six-yard box.

Jamaica's best scoring threat actually came on the final shot of the game as Theo Robinson's close-range blast from the right side was batted away.

It was another bitter defeat to the US for Jamaica, who lost 1-2 on June 7 in Kingston when Brad Evans scored in second-half stoppage time.

The defeat means that Jamaica have now been eliminated from the World Cup qualifying contention.

The Reggae Boyz entered the game against the US still mathematically in the running for a fourth-place playoff spot to face Oceania region winner New Zealand.

The US had already qualified for Brazil 2014, heading the CONCACAF table with 16 points while Jamaica sit at the bottom with a mere four points.

Burnley vs. Everton: Final score 1-3, Toffees moving up

Oct 26 2014 10:25am CDT | Source: SBNation

The Toffees are close to where they'd like to be after a rocky start to the season. Everton got off to a horrible start this season, but they're back into the top half, within sight of the top four, after their second successive win. They were tested by Burnley at times on Sunday, but their superior quality eventually won out in a 3-1 victory. The Toffees were on the board early through Samuel Eto'o, who started alongside Romelu Luk ...

AMSTERDAM – Tim Howard and Everton kicked off their first Premier League win streak since April on Sunday, topping nearby hosts Burnley 3-1 to vault into the better half of the table. The US star-on-hiatus required just two saves and a single cross claim to stop a two-game road slide for the Toffees, with two of his intrusions coming in the final 10 minutes. Howard was only beaten wh ...

Oct 23 2014 1:57pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Everton remained atop their Europa League group following a scoreless draw at French side Lille on Thursday evening at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Clear chances were scarce as the two teams cancelled each other out in what turned out to be a low-key meeting of the top two in Group H. Qatar’s Newest Idea For Hosting World Cup Games Without People Dying: 1 A.M. Start Times

Oct 21 2014 2:28pm CDT | Source: SportsGrid

Amazingly, Qatar has not yet been stripped of its World Cup hosting duties, which means we’re still eight years away from supporting what amounts to mass homicide (not to mention slavery and possibly terrorism?) in the name of soccer. But if that wasn’t bad enough — and I, like you, have a pretty low set of decency standards, so I feel ya — how about the prospect of making players kick off at 1 a.m.? This comes down to the extreme heat. Qatar, locat ...

Inside Out

Oct 17 2014 8:39am CDT | Source: Grantland

“I don’t do well with claustrophobic situations.” That’s Landon Donovan, talking in “The Finish Line,” the new Grantland Features series on his imminent retirement from soccer, about the aftermath of his most famous goal — the one against Algeria in the last skinny sliver of extra time, the one that sent the United States through to the knockout rounds of the 2010 World Cup. The one that made a million cameras in a million bars shake like they were recording an earthquake. The one th ...
