Del Potro sets up Djokovic final in Shanghai

Oct 13 2013, 4:10am CDT | by IANS

Shanghai, Oct 13 (IANS) Argentine sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro set up a final showdown against defending champion Novak Djokovic at the Shanghai Masters after pulling off a 6-2, 6-4 win over World No.1 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals here.

Shanghai, Oct 13 — Argentine sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro set up a final showdown against defending champion Novak Djokovic at the Shanghai Masters after pulling off a 6-2, 6-4 win over World No.1 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals here.

With the crucial win Saturday, del Potro also secured a berth in the ATP World Tour Finals, reports Xinhua.

Del Potro, who just won an ATP title in Tokyo a week ago, continued his top form and wrapped up the convincing victory in one hour and 46 minutes. The Argentine used only 25 minutes to build up a 4-0 lead in the opening set. Nadal held serve for the first time in the fifth game but it was too far from enough to catch up with del Potro, who drew first blood at 6-2.

Nadal revitalised a little in the second set but del Potro continued to hit scorching winners from both sides with his deadly forehand. Nadal created four breaking points in the set but just could not convert on any one of them.

Del Potro took the decisive break in the third game of the set and never really tested in the remaining time.

Earlier, top seed and defending champion Djokovic withstood a strong challenge from seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France to prevail 6-2, 7-5. The opening set proved to be a routine job for the defending champion but he had to deal with a surging comeback from the Frenchman before sealing the victory in one hour and 33 minutes.

"It's important for me to get into another final. My serving was very controlled, very efficient. I was trying to open up the court and move him around. I know he likes to have targets, he likes to play from the backhand corners so I tried not to let him into that comfort zone," the Serb said.

Djokovic owns a 9-3 edge in the head-to-head against del Potro with the Serb prevailing in their most recent meeting, a five set thriller at the Wimbledon semifinals this year.

Will We See a Novak Djokovic-Rafael Nadal Showdown at 2014 US Open?

Jul 18 2014 3:01am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Tennis legends Pete Sampras (L), Jim Cou
It’s actually quite remarkable that Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have met in the U.S. Open finals as the top two players in the world in two of the last three years. While it should be the odds-on-favorite matchup, recent history shows that No. 1 vs. No. 2 rarely happens at the U.S. Open. What makes it so difficult for the top two players to endure to the U.S. Open finals? Conversely, why is New York’s final now unable to stop the exceptional tide that is Nadal vs. Djo ...

Wimbledon 2014 will not be the final time Roger Federer competes at a major venue, but is it the last time he will realistically have a chance to win his 18th Grand Slam title? Never mind that Federer is nearing his 33rd birthday (August 8) and that he is trying to become the oldest man to win a major title since Andres Gimeno in 1972. What else would he be playing for? The love of the game? The travel and the gr ...

Nadal vs. Murray: French Open Semifinal Is Must-Watch Match

Jun 5 2014 8:17pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Cast Of "Nashville" In Concert - New York, NY
When Rafael Nadal faces Andy Murray in a French Open semifinal, it will be a must-watch match for all of the obvious reasons. Both are top players in the world today, and the two of them have won five of the last eight Grand Slam titles.  But this match is also tantalizing for a different reason altogether—these two rarely do battle these days. While they met in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open—Nadal won a heck of a match—it was the first time they had actually played a match against on ...

The Championships - Wimbledon 2014: Middle Sunday
It has been easy to forget that Novak Djokovic is the best tennis player in the world. He finished 2013 on a 24-0 run. His record this year is 24-3; his winning percentage is the highest among players on the tour. He has won three titles this year, all ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, the level just below the Grand Slams. He has beaten Rafael Nadal, his biggest rival, the world no. 1, the last four times they played — and those matches were not close. In the final of the Italian Open i ...

Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro reacts
So the Indian Wells final will be Rafa Nadal vs Juan Martin Del Potro. Nadal beat Berdych in straight sets some hours back after beating Federer in straight sets in the Quarters. Really surprised to see Rafa in the finals because this is just his 1st hard court tournament since Miami last March and just his 4th tournament since his 7 month injury lay off and the first one where any of the top 3 have been involved. He was quite won ...

Novak Djokovic is aware that he is playing for tennis history at the 2014 French Open. It’s his goal, his single-minded passion and the most important completion to his legacy.
