According to USA Today Sports' Mike Brehm, Halpern's contract is one-year, two-way one. This means he will receive a lower salary if he gets called down to the minors. Terms of the deal weren't divulged.
Halpern will be playing in the NHL after a short stint in Finland with TPS Turku, which means waivers must be cleared before he gets to pay for Phoenix. Sarah McLellan of AZ Central Sports reports the Coyotes have to make a roster change in order to accommodate Halpern into the 23-man roster limit.
Either Tim Kennedy or Brandon Yip, who were both recently called up from the Coyotes' AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates, are most likely going to be dropped from Phoenix's NHL roster.
Halpern had three points in the 2012-13 lockout-shortened season with the Canadiens and Rangers. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Capitals on March 29, 1999.
He went on to become Washington's team captain in the 2005-06 NHL season.
