Del Bosque pleased as Spain reach World Cup finals

Oct 16 2013, 4:55am CDT | by IANS

Madrid, Oct 16 (IANS) Spain coach Vicente del Bosque was understandably a happy man after leading his side to the 2014 World Cup finals with an easy 2-0 victory over Georgia.

Madrid, Oct 16 — Spain coach Vicente del Bosque was understandably a happy man after leading his side to the 2014 World Cup finals with an easy 2-0 victory over Georgia.

Although they needed just a point from their home game against Georgia in order to book a ticket for Brazil next summer, goals from Alvaro Negredo and Juan Mata saw the Spanish team to a comfortable win, reports Xinhua.

"It's practically routine for us because we keep on qualifying for tournaments but we have to remember that it's an important success for the federation, because Spain were qualifying for tournaments long before me and my team arrived," said Del Bosque.

Spain have qualified for Brazil by dropping just four points in draws at home to Finland and France, but Del Bosque insisted that despite it being routine reaching major finals, his side had been forced to work hard.

"It hasn't been easy, we had problems against smaller teams and we competed with a very good French side to finish top of our group. However, we have been able to qualify and we have done so with austerity and moderation," he said.

Negredo's second goal in two games came at a time when there is a debate over whether Spain should nationalise Atletico Madrid's Brazilian born forward, Diego Costa, who is currently the top scorer in the Spanish Primera Liga.

Del Bosque has already said Spain are interested in Costa, but said there should be more to come from Negredo.

"He is a striker who doesn't play as well as his ability permits. He still hasn't discovered his full potential," said the coach, who again discussed Costa after this week the Brazilian Football Federation said they wanted to count on the player who has already played a friendly game for the country of his birth.

"We've already spoken with him, but we won't prevent him from playing for the country he wants to play for. He feels Spanish as well as Brazilian," he commented.

Aug 26 2014 2:15am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The transfer window, just like every other area of football, is black and white. It is consists of those who got a bargain and others who were ripped off, with nothing in between. Like everything else, it is composed of winners and losers, with no room for nuance. Except maybe that’s not always true. As La Liga opened this weekend, and a new-look Barcelona negotiated a few bumps in the road to finally coast past Elche, we had a look at how a major refit to their engine room mi ...

Xavi Hernandez – Spain’s Greatest Ever Midfielder - originally posted on Soccerlens.com If you where to take a casual stroll past one of the many Plaza’s that you could come upon in any one of the Spanish cities, or towns across the length and breadth of the nation. Marca pay tribute to one of Spain’s all-time greats: “Xavi hangs up his boots” [Picture]

Aug 5 2014 6:40pm CDT | Source: 101 great goals

It was a sad day for Spanish football when Xavi Hernandez confirmed that he had called time on his international career and retired from Spain duty. The Barcelona maestro had been integral to the Spain side that conquered all before them in a four year period from 2008 to 2012. When Vicente del Bosque’s team crumbled at the World Cup in Brazil it felt like the end of an era in more ways than one and it seemed like even then we knew we’d never see the likes of Xavi ...

Jesus Navas Faces Battle to Establish Himself in Manchester City Starting XI

Jul 18 2014 8:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Jesus Navas’ first season at Manchester City can almost certainly be considered a success. He offered out-and-out width after a season defined by City’s inability to switch from their narrow formation when things weren’t going according to plan. He added pace to a forward line that badly needed it, and he scored the third goal in the League Cup final win over Sunderland at Wembley, ending Manuel Pellegrini’ ...
