Golfer Barr in joint first round lead in Macau

Oct 17 2013, 8:26am CDT | by IANS

Macau, Oct 17 (IANS) Australian Scott Barr battled to a three-under-par 68 for the joint first round lead at a wind-swept Macau Open Thursday, renewing his affair with the $800,000 Asian Tour tournament.

Macau, Oct 17 — Australian Scott Barr battled to a three-under-par 68 for the joint first round lead at a wind-swept Macau Open Thursday, renewing his affair with the $800,000 Asian Tour tournament.

The 41-year-old produced a measured performance at the par-71 Macau Golf and Country Club shooting four birdies against a lone bogey to set the early pace with rookie Ben Campbell of New Zealand, who shot the tournament's first hole-in-one, and Finland's Kalle Samooja.

Birthday boy Ernie Els of South Africa salvaged a 71 after fighting back from being four-over-par through his opening seven holes to lie three shots behind the leaders.

Two-time champion Zhang Lian-wei rolled back the years with a 69 for a share of fourth place with Thai teenager Jazz Janewattananond and Prom Meesawat, Australian Marcus Both and Bangladeshi Siddikur, who led on four-under before bogeying his closing two holes.

Barr broke onto the Asian scene 10-years-ago here when he lost in a play-off to Colin Montgomerie after agonisingly lipping out a birdie putt for victory on the 72nd hole.

"I hit the ball good enough and made some up and downs early in the round and kept it going. The ball wasn't flying early this morning. It was very windy, very dark and murky. I knew it was going to be tough. I'm not sure what the forecast is going to be but if it stays like this, I'm actually looking forward to it," said Barr, who is still seeking the elusive first Asian Tour victory.

Leaderboard:

68 - Scott BARR (AUS), Kalle SAMOOJA (FIN), Ben CAMPBELL (NZL).

69 - Marcus BOTH (AUS), ZHANG Lian-wei (CHN), Jazz JANEWATTANANOND (THA), Prom MEESAWAT (THA), SIDDIKUR (BAN), Jason KNUTZON (USA).

Aug 12 2014 10:49pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Let's see. Rory McIlroy has already won the U.S. Open, The British Open and two PGA Championships. That's three-fourths of a Grand Slam. What else could Rory McIlroy possibly want in golf? "To be one ( major championship) behind Phil, one behind Seve, level with Ernie, level with Raymond Floyd, I mean, I never thought I'd get this far at 25 years of age," McIlroy said after his victory. "I was happy being a two‑time major champion comi ...

McIlroy wins PGA Championship for back-to-back major victories

Aug 10 2014 6:31pm CDT | Source: GolfWRX

The PGA of America must be smiling broadly. It produced the intriguing, unexpected tournament denouement that the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship wish they might have offered in 2014. Understand that Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy turned in wonderful performances to claim major championships in 2014; the only knock is that they did it (for the most part) in Secretariat fashion. Two ...

Aug 8 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

After the allure of Wednesday was over, Tiger Woods made his return in Valhalla Golf Club on Day 1 of the 2014 PGA Championship. Unfortunately, it was much of the same from Woods, as his inconsistencies became one of the many headlines on Thursday. While Woods struggled to finish at three-over 74 on Day 1, several other golfers rose to the occasion to stand atop the leaderboard. One of the early leaders was Kevin Chappell, who comes in as the No. 71 golfer on the PGA Tour. With more missed cuts ...

LET THEM HAVE COKE: 6 Reasons Why Cocaine (And Other Drugs) Should Be Legal On The PGA Tour

Aug 1 2014 2:27pm CDT | Source: SportsGrid

Paulina Gretzky’s husband and apparently a professional golfer, Dustin Johnson, tested positive for cocaine in a recent tour mandated drug test. Do we have to now boo him in a subdued, courteous manner? [very tame noise of golf jeers fills the gallery] If you’re anything like me, the news that a guy used cocaine on a professional golf tour is hardly interesting/news at all. First off, he’s dating a party animal. ...

RBC Canadian Open 2014: Tee times, TV schedule, online streaming for Friday

Jul 25 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: SBNation

An unknown amateur stole the show late on Thursday, but Friday will feature the Canadian Open's top group out in the afternoon during the broadcast window. A benign Royal Montreal setup on Thursday was open to several scores in the mid-60s, and a pretty deep set of players will start round two in the red. But even with the solid group under-par, the story of the first day was probably an unk ...

MONTREAL — It was at Royal Montreal 60 years ago that Pat Fletcher won the Canadian Open. No other Canadian has won his national open golf tournament since then, but the PGA Tour event is back at the tree-lined course that played host to the 2007 Presidents Cup. Mike Weir, Graham DeLaet and David Hearn are among the 19 home-grown players looking to end the losing run. brightcove.createExperiences(); "It’s hard to believe ...
