About Richard Costello (www.longtrailahead.blogspot.com)

Richard Costello is a prolific adventure sports athlete with a uniquely diverse background. Once a former 352 lb. record-holding Scottish Highland Games/Strongman athlete, Richard‘s main focus has shifted more towards the endeavors of endurance sporting events.

As a former off road triathlete, Richard has produced impressive appearances on national, world championship, and global levels. Past accomplishments include being a 6x competitor at the Off Road Triathlon World Championships, 4x U.S. National Championship participant, as well as tour stops at the German Championship and European Championships held in Austria.

Richard also has several long distance open water swims to his credit, with solo appearances made at Alcatraz Island, Donner Lake, and the Maui Channel swim. In 2012, Richard focused solely on a series of trail running races, designed in part to test and challenge runners skills and fitness levels. Richard's participation in that series ultimately culminated with an appearance at the Trail Run World Championships, held later on that same year in Oahu, HI.

A change in athletic direction and purpose found Richard looking towards active participation in a different type of sporting event. In 2013, Richard's attention was placed entirely on accomplishing the Tour Divide race - the longest and arguably most challenging mountain bike race on the planet. Traveling from Banff, Alberta, and down to the border of Mexico, Richard cycled 2,859.11 miles in 30 days, 9 hours, 48 minutes. During that time, he traversed 18 different mountain passes, and climbed nearly 174,000 total feet. Out of the 143 athletes who started the race, Richard was one of only 82 who ultimately finished.

Continuing on in 2014, Richard Costello will remain committed to endurance-style cycling and is officially scheduled to take part in the inaugural 2014 Trans AM Bike Race. Starting in Astoria, Oregon, on June 7, 2014, he’ll be cycling across 10 states, eventually crossing the finish line in Yorktown, Virginia. The entire route consists of over 4,223 miles and racing must be done in self-supported fashion.

About American Mustache Institute (www.americanmustacheinstitute.org)

Founded in 1965 and committed to battling a demonstrated discriminatory culture against people of Mustached American heritage, the American Mustache Institute is the world’s leading facial hair advocacy organization and think tank protecting the rights of, and fighting discrimination against, Mustached Americans by promoting the growth, care, and culture of the lower nose forest.

Broadly considered the bravest organization in the history of mankind behind only the U.S. military and the post-Jim Henson Muppets, the Institute serves as the ACLU of the downtrodden Mustached American people, making its headquarters in the City of St. Louis, as it is home to the world’s largest mustache – the Gateway Arch.

AMI continues to battle negative stereotyping that has accompanied the mustache since those glory years of the 1970s – the peak of mustache acceptance – fighting to create a climate of acceptance, understanding, flavor saving, and upper lip warmth for all mustached Americans alike.
