Atletico close gap on La Liga leaders

Madrid, Oct 28 (IANS) Atletico Madrid took advantage of Real Madrid's defeat against Barcelona to move five points ahead of their city rivals in second place and a point behind the leaders from Catalonia as they piled the misery on Betis, who are now in the relegation zone.

Madrid, Oct 28 — Atletico Madrid took advantage of Real Madrid's defeat against Barcelona to move five points ahead of their city rivals in second place and a point behind the leaders from Catalonia as they piled the misery on Betis, who are now in the relegation zone.

Youngster Oliver Torres put Atletico ahead as early as in the first minute, before David Villa rediscovered his scoring touch with two early goals in the second half and Diego Costa added to the win with his 11th goal of the campaign with 25 minutes remaining with Gabi scoring a fifth in injury time Sunday, reports Xinhua.

The 5-0 win at Vicente Calderon helped Atletico move to within a point of Barca who beat Real Madrid 2-1 in El Clasico Saturday.

Villarreal remain fourth after Giovani Dos Santos led their 4-1 thrashing of Valencia. The Mexican forward scored his side's last two goals of the game and was a handful for the Valencia defence in the entirre game.

He played a major part in the goals scored by Uche and Hernan Perez which put his side in control of the match.

Sevilla defeated 10-man Osasuna 2-1 in the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium with goals from Igor Rakitic and Jairo after Damia had been sent off late in the first half for the visitors. Oriol Riera netted a late consolation for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Almeria remain bottom of the table and without a win after losing 0-3 away to Real Sociedad. The result once again puts the future of Almeria coach Francisco Rodriguez in doubt.

Sep 22 2014 1:47pm CDT | Source: 101 great goals

Pablo Zabaleta is clearly still reeling from his sending off against Chelsea yesterday. He’d already apologized to Manchester City fans for his rash behaviour yesterday, but also added that Diego Costa should also have been sent off, thereby trying to absolve himself of some of the blame.Possibly realizing that the first apology was a bit half-arsed, he followed it up with a second this evening, wordless ...

Kompany gives his seal of approval for tremendous Mangala

Sep 22 2014 11:04am CDT | Source: Winner Sports

A few eyebrows were raised when Manchester City decided to splash a whopping British record £32million to sign Eliaquim Mangala from Porto this summer. On early showing though, it is easy to see why the Citizens splashed such a hefty amount on the French international. Mangala had to face a bit of baptism of fire after being handed his debut against the attacking talents of Chelsea yesterday but the 23-year old more than stood up to the massive task at hand and did wonderfully well to n ...

Chelsea takes page out of Man City’s playbook

Sep 22 2014 9:30am CDT | Source: Sportsnet.ca

You’d have to assume that Manchester City didn’t see this power shift coming. It’s been so sensible, after all. Back in May, the club finished four points clear of Chelsea and kept Jose Mourinho’s team at a relatively comfortable distance throughout the final stretch of the title race. Since then, City has added to its squad perfectly sensibly—Bacary Sagna, Fernando, Willy Caballero, Frank Lampard and Eliaquim Mangal ...

Jose Mourinho Answers Manuel Pellegrini's 'Small Club' and Frank Lampard Taunts

Sep 22 2014 2:30am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Jose Mourinho has hit back at Manuel Pellegrini's claims that Chelsea utilised the tactics of a "smaller club" during their 1-1 draw with Manchester City, a match which saw former Blues legend Frank Lampard net for the Etihad club.
