According to Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register, Selanne lost several teeth after he got high sticked by Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Luke Schenn in the third period of Anaheim's 3-2 road win on Tuesday.
Schenn was jostling for puck possession with Anaheim's Emerson Etem in the corner when he inadvertently caught a trailing Selanne flush on the mouth with his stick.
He needed 40 stitches to close his wounds.
Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau spoke about the unfortunate incident.
"You hate to see it. I just hate to see the whole teeth thing. Drives me nuts. It was a reckless use of the stick but what are you going to do?
"Hockey happens so fast. It was definitely not meant to hit him. But he could have had a little more control of his stick, which we're trying to get (into) the game. The players are in control of their stick. It's been called on us a couple times this year."
Selanne's incident is just the latest among a rash of injuries which has hit the Ducks. Goaltender Viktor Fasth suffered a lower body injury o Oct. 17 while forward Dustin Penner got concussed three days later.
The 43-year-old Selanne declared over the summer that the 2013-14 NHL season would be his last.
