Dwight Howard scored 17 points and grabbed 26 rebounds in his Houston Rockets debut on Wednesday to lead his team to a 96-83 win over the visiting Charlotte Bobcats.

The Dwight Howard era officially kicked off in Houston on Wednesday as the Rockets beat the Charlotte Bobcats 96-83.

Howard was a major force in the middle, scoring 17 points and grabbing 26 rebounds in a dominating performance. Guard James Harden added 21 points in a supporting role to help Houston pull away late.

Leading by just four at 72-68, the Rockets uncorked a 14-4 run to lead by 14. Harden and Howard collaborated on an alley-oop dunk during that spurt which got the Toyota Center crowd on its feet.

Howard, who left the Los Angeles Lakers during the offseason to sign an $88 million contract with the Rockets, had a two-handed jam at the end of that run.

Houston saw several of its players limping on and off the court due to several injuries. Harden, Patrick Beverley and Jeremy Lin all went to the Rockets locker room at one point during the first half.

Beverley never came back as he was saddled with a rib injury. Lin and Harden eventually returned -- the latter shaking off a lower back issue and a 2-for-8, four-turnover start to finish second in scoring behind Howard.

Francisco Garcia made five three-point baskets on his way to 19 points for the Rockets. Lin scored 16 for Houston.

The Bobcats were led by forward Josh McRoberts who had 15 points.Center Al Jefferson, who signed a three-year, $41 million deal in the offseason, made his debut for Charlotte and had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Rookie Cody Zeller, the fourth overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft out of Indiana University, had two points and four rebounds for the Bobcats.

The Rockets will next take on their in-state rivals, the Dallas Mavericks, on Nov. 1 while the Bobcats head home to face the Cleveland Cavaliers on that same day.

Diagnosing Chicago Bulls' Remaining Roster Flaws

Aug 27 2014 10:50pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Chicago Bulls did an exceptional job filling out their roster this past summer, but there are still a couple of flaws in its construction—if we nitpick. The Bulls bolstered the frontcourt, adding two solid bigs in Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic. Trading with the Denver Nuggets for Doug McDermott was also a big addition for their perimeter shooting, an area of weakness over the past couple of years. And of course, there's the return of former MVP Derrick Rose. However, missing out on Ca ...

Can Steve Nash Erase Stigma of Last Two Seasons?

Aug 27 2014 6:31am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Steve Nash’s basketball world was just fine until he joined the Los Angeles Lakers. Sure, he was getting older and wasn’t the player he had once been, but he still averaged a double-double during his last season with the Phoenix Suns. But then came the summer of 2012 and the arrival of Nash and Dwight Howard in L.A., and the two became forever linked and identified by a doomed experiment. When Mike D’Antoni ...

Houston Rockets' Personnel Is Ready to Improve Defense

Aug 25 2014 11:22pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Houston Rockets need to be better defenders, and they know it. Superstar and team leader James Harden has begun to lead the charge toward improvement after a year spent getting humiliated by Internet video montages of his lax coverage. Harden has focused on his defense with Team USA this summer. This, from Bobby Gonzalez of Sheridan Hoops, is especially telling: I spoke to several members of the USAB staff, and behind the scenes they were ...

Why Andrew Wiggins Is a Better Franchise Building Block Than Kevin Love

Aug 25 2014 5:25pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Andrew Wiggins is not better than Kevin Love. The 2014 No. 1 overall pick is a lot of things—athletic, explosive, progressively confident, a perfect fit for the Minnesota Timberwolves—but he, of absolutely no real NBA experience, is not better than Kevin Love. For the Timberwolves' purposes, though, he is the better building block.  It sounds crazy to entertain. Love is a six-year veteran and top-10 superstar fresh off becoming the first player in league history to aver ...

Steve Nash Describes Kobe Bryant: ‘Motherf*cking A**hole’

Aug 25 2014 10:15am CDT | Source: slamonline

In an absolutely terrific longform article published by SI last week after trailing Kobe Bryant in China this summer, Steve Nash was asked to succinctly describe his relentlessly demanding Los Angeles Lakers teammate. Nash made Bryant extremely happy by calling him the ultimate a-hole (but in a good way … we think): It’s interesting that he equates joy with hard work, as if it must be earned. In Kobe’s world, anything that come ...

NBA Rumors: Examining Whether Rajon Rondo Should Be Next Star on Trade Block

Aug 25 2014 10:15am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

With the Kevin Love trade having gone from painstaking whirlwind of inevitability to completion over the weekend, there is a strange sense of emptiness floating around the NBA.  For the first time this decade, the superstar trade market seems dead. In the past five offseasons, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard and Love—all rightfully considered among the dozen best players in the league—have been traded. Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, although on their last legs, ...

Los Angeles Lakers' Future Still Rests in Kobe Bryant's Hands

Aug 22 2014 9:39am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Kobe Bryant's present with the Los Angeles Lakers is littered with question marks, and his future with the franchise might be better measured in months instead of years. But his position within the organization is the same one he's held the majority of his career. He is the Lakers' most important player for today and tomorrow. That fact is somehow equal parts entirely predictable and incredibly astounding. On one hand, Bryant is a historically prolific player ...

Timberwolves Have Themselves to Blame for Kevin Love's Impending Departure

Aug 22 2014 6:23am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

In June 2008, Kevin Love was a bright young NBA prospect—armed with a killer jump shot, a nose for rebounds and a knack for pretty outlet passes—a certified top-10 pick awaiting his destination. Among friends, Love openly dreamed of three teams:    The New York Knicks, who held the sixth pick. The Los Angeles Clippers, who had the seventh pick. And the Minnesota Timberwolves, who were picking third. Yes, Minnesota—the land of 10,000 lakes, brutal winters ...

Kevin Love and the Anatomy of Forcing an NBA Trade

Aug 21 2014 2:54pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Kevin Love's escape from Minnesota has been a long time coming. "My patience is not high," the star forward told Yahoo Sports' Marc J. Spears all the way back in the summer of 2012. "Would yours be, especially when I'm a big proponent of greatness surrounding itself with greatness? All these [Team USA] guys seem to have great players around them." Winning a gold medal with USA Basketball in London that summer s ...
