Dwight Howard scored 17 points and grabbed 26 rebounds in his Houston Rockets debut on Wednesday to lead his team to a 96-83 win over the visiting Charlotte Bobcats.

The Dwight Howard era officially kicked off in Houston on Wednesday as the Rockets beat the Charlotte Bobcats 96-83.

Howard was a major force in the middle, scoring 17 points and grabbing 26 rebounds in a dominating performance. Guard James Harden added 21 points in a supporting role to help Houston pull away late.

Leading by just four at 72-68, the Rockets uncorked a 14-4 run to lead by 14. Harden and Howard collaborated on an alley-oop dunk during that spurt which got the Toyota Center crowd on its feet.

Howard, who left the Los Angeles Lakers during the offseason to sign an $88 million contract with the Rockets, had a two-handed jam at the end of that run.

Houston saw several of its players limping on and off the court due to several injuries. Harden, Patrick Beverley and Jeremy Lin all went to the Rockets locker room at one point during the first half.

Beverley never came back as he was saddled with a rib injury. Lin and Harden eventually returned -- the latter shaking off a lower back issue and a 2-for-8, four-turnover start to finish second in scoring behind Howard.

Francisco Garcia made five three-point baskets on his way to 19 points for the Rockets. Lin scored 16 for Houston.

The Bobcats were led by forward Josh McRoberts who had 15 points.Center Al Jefferson, who signed a three-year, $41 million deal in the offseason, made his debut for Charlotte and had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Rookie Cody Zeller, the fourth overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft out of Indiana University, had two points and four rebounds for the Bobcats.

The Rockets will next take on their in-state rivals, the Dallas Mavericks, on Nov. 1 while the Bobcats head home to face the Cleveland Cavaliers on that same day.

Are Houston Rockets Still a Top-4 Western Conference Team?

Jul 29 2014 6:24pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Who are the Houston Rockets? As they continue to work through an NBA offseason that was once dressed in promise and optimism and grand ambitions but is now steeped in disappointment, it's a fair question. And it's a malleable inquiry at that, not one stringently limited to the scope of how it's phrased. With one question, we're asking a vast number of different things. Are the Rockets w ...

How Will Kevin Love Trade Stack Up Against Recent Blockbuster Moves?

Jul 29 2014 6:16pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The consensus is that Kevin Love will be leaving the Minnesota Timberwolves at some point this offseason as part of a blockbuster trade. Unfortunately, that's where certainty on the topic stops. Nobody knows exactly when such a move will happen or how it will take shape. Where is also hazy, as a handful of teams have assets on offer, including the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers and, maybe, the Golden State Warriors. The why part is ...

2014 NBA Free Agency Proves Shooting Is King

Jul 29 2014 3:31pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The premium on shooting in the NBA has quietly become a bigger story over the past decade or so, but it reached a point at which it was no longer possible to ignore during this summer's free-agency period. For posterity, we'll call that point "The Jodie Meeks Watershed." The Detroit Pistons agreed to pay Meeks $20 million on a three-year contract at the outset of the July free-agenc ...

How Should Cleveland Cavaliers Proceed If They Miss on Kevin Love Trade?

Jul 29 2014 12:56pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Sure things don't exist in the NBA, as teams are wont to find out. Things go wrong. Strategies change. Injuries happen. Players leave. Trades fall through. Backup plans take center stage. Active participants in the Kevin Love fox-trot are not exempt from such uncertainty. So, the Cleveland Cavaliers are not inoculated against such ambiguity. Their hot pursuit of a third superstar could end with ...

Do Chicago Bulls Need Kevin Love in Order to Win NBA Title This Year?

Jul 28 2014 8:26pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Kevin Love is on the trading block, and it’s all anyone can talk about. The Chicago Bulls, along with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors, are in the mix for his services. But do they need to be? Love will be a free agent next July. His contract runs out at the end of the 2014-15 season, so any team who acquires him will be faced with the task of convincing him to stay. The three-time All-Star and UCLA alum can make as many verbal commitments as he likes to whatever tea ...

Which Roy Hibbert Will Indiana Pacers Get Next Season?

Jul 28 2014 6:29pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

We saw two versions of Roy Hibbert last season, and the Indiana Pacers should be praying the better one shows up in 2014-15. Their season will depend on it. Rapid, startling declines like the one Hibbert endured last season are rare, and it's hard to pick out the specific spot when things went south. But the difference between the big man's pre- and post-break numbers is stark enough to make the point: Everyone seems to remember H ...

Why Did Houston Rockets Give Up After Striking out on Chris Bosh?

Jul 27 2014 9:18pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

After hitting home runs in the offseason of 2012 with James Harden and 2013 with Dwight Howard, the Houston Rockets went for a third. But, after attempting to nab either Carmelo Anthony or Chris Bosh, they struck out and then seemingly quit. There were other high-caliber—albeit restricted—free agents available, such as Eric Bledsoe of the Phoenix Suns and Greg Monroe of the Detroit Pistons. So why didn’t the Rockets keep gunning for a big name rather ...

Jul 27 2014 2:30pm CDT | Source: dime mag
