Dwight Howard scored 17 points and grabbed 26 rebounds in his Houston Rockets debut on Wednesday to lead his team to a 96-83 win over the visiting Charlotte Bobcats.

The Dwight Howard era officially kicked off in Houston on Wednesday as the Rockets beat the Charlotte Bobcats 96-83.

Howard was a major force in the middle, scoring 17 points and grabbing 26 rebounds in a dominating performance. Guard James Harden added 21 points in a supporting role to help Houston pull away late.

Leading by just four at 72-68, the Rockets uncorked a 14-4 run to lead by 14. Harden and Howard collaborated on an alley-oop dunk during that spurt which got the Toyota Center crowd on its feet.

Howard, who left the Los Angeles Lakers during the offseason to sign an $88 million contract with the Rockets, had a two-handed jam at the end of that run.

Houston saw several of its players limping on and off the court due to several injuries. Harden, Patrick Beverley and Jeremy Lin all went to the Rockets locker room at one point during the first half.

Beverley never came back as he was saddled with a rib injury. Lin and Harden eventually returned -- the latter shaking off a lower back issue and a 2-for-8, four-turnover start to finish second in scoring behind Howard.

Francisco Garcia made five three-point baskets on his way to 19 points for the Rockets. Lin scored 16 for Houston.

The Bobcats were led by forward Josh McRoberts who had 15 points.Center Al Jefferson, who signed a three-year, $41 million deal in the offseason, made his debut for Charlotte and had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Rookie Cody Zeller, the fourth overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft out of Indiana University, had two points and four rebounds for the Bobcats.

The Rockets will next take on their in-state rivals, the Dallas Mavericks, on Nov. 1 while the Bobcats head home to face the Cleveland Cavaliers on that same day.

Stan Van Gundy's Pistons Experiment Will Be NBA's Most Entertaining Sideshow

Aug 29 2014 10:58am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

All the way back in June, new Detroit Pistons president and head coach Stan Van Gundy made it clear he was thoroughly preoccupied by restricted free agent Greg Monroe's contract situation. "Even with free agency and the draft and everything else," Van Gundy told reporters (h/t NBA.com's Keith Langlois). "I’ve spent well over half my time on that whole situation." He added, "The fair thing to say is ...

Jerry Colangelo Calls James Harden the Leader of Team USA

Aug 29 2014 10:20am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo was just answering a question, but in the process he may have given this team both guidance and a slick slogan. Don't fear the beard—follow it. Those are my words, not his, but what he actually said about starting swingman James Harden wasn't too much different. Colangelo, via Michael Lee of The Washington Post, said he wants Harden to lead this team and feels he has the tools for the task: Right now, I think I would look to Harden as that lea ...

USA Basketball can never be fixed

Aug 29 2014 8:56am CDT | Source: SBNation

Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski have made Team USA win again, but the structural program problems still exist and always will. A decade ago, USA Basketball suffered its worst humiliation ever: a bronze medal in the Athens Olympics. After going undefeated en route to three straight gold medals, the Americans lost three games in one tournament. Most nations would be thrilled with bronze. For t ...

Diagnosing Houston Rockets' Remaining Roster Flaws

Aug 29 2014 5:53am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Houston Rockets have a young and talented roster, but there is still plenty of room for improvement.  By now, you might have heard that Houston's offseason didn't go quite as planned. The Rockets not only failed to add a third star to play with Dwight Howard and James Harden, but they lost some of last season's key role players as well.  Chandler Parsons, Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik will all be playing elsewhere next season. Making matters worse, both Parsons ...

Diagnosing Chicago Bulls' Remaining Roster Flaws

Aug 27 2014 10:50pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The Chicago Bulls did an exceptional job filling out their roster this past summer, but there are still a couple of flaws in its construction—if we nitpick. The Bulls bolstered the frontcourt, adding two solid bigs in Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic. Trading with the Denver Nuggets for Doug McDermott was also a big addition for their perimeter shooting, an area of weakness over the past couple of years. And of course, there's the return of former MVP Derrick Rose. However, missing out on ...

Can Steve Nash Erase Stigma of Last Two Seasons?

Aug 27 2014 6:31am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Steve Nash’s basketball world was just fine until he joined the Los Angeles Lakers. Sure, he was getting older and wasn’t the player he had once been, but he still averaged a double-double during his last season with the Phoenix Suns. But then came the summer of 2012 and the arrival of Nash and Dwight Howard in L.A., and the two became forever linked and identified by a doomed experiment. When Mike D’Antoni was hired by the Lakers jus ...
