Bhullar tied 8th, eyes upset at Shanghai golf

Oct 31 2013, 5:00am CDT | by IANS

Shanghai, Oct 31 (IANS) India's Gaganjeet Bhullar is hopeful of creating an upset after he opened his campaign with a three-under-par 69 to take a share of eighth place in the $8.5 million WGC-HSBC Champions golf in Shanghai, China Thursday.

Shanghai, Oct 31 — India's Gaganjeet Bhullar is hopeful of creating an upset after he opened his campaign with a three-under-par 69 to take a share of eighth place in the $8.5 million WGC-HSBC Champions golf in Shanghai, China Thursday.

Although Bhullar trails first round leader Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland by four shots, India's sole representative at this Shanghai showpiece is confident of upstaging the star-studded field at the Sheshan International Golf Club this week.

"There's still a lot of golf left and my hopes are really high. I'm playing well and striking the ball really well and I guess anything and everything is possible over the next three days," said Bhullar.

Bhullar's confidence comes from his battling performance where he overcame a stumbling start in his opening eight holes before finding his way back into the mix with five birdies starting from the par-four nine.

"I was two-over after eight holes and I guess I was trying to figure out the green speed then," said Bhullar.

"But after that, I got really comfortable on the back-nine. I gave myself lots of birdie opportunities and I was glad I took advantage of all of them," added the Indian.

Sharing eighth place with six other players including Dustin Johnson of the United States, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Asian Tour honorary member and International Ambassador Ernie Els of South Africa, Bhullar believes the gap between players from Asia and the rest of the world will be closed once they find their self belief.

"I guess the only difference between us, Asian Tour players and these other world class players lies in our mental strength. With more and more opportunities to play in the big tournaments in this part of the world, we'll definitely be on par with them very soon."

Rory McIlroy And Britney Spears Star In Brilliant ‘Andy Murray: The Movie’ Sketch

Balls.ie As part of the Stand Up To Cancer campaign, the running gag is that Channel 4 have commissioned a feature film centred around the life of Andy Murray. The former Wimbledon Champion sat down with director Richard Ayoade of IT Crowd fame, ( or Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace for the sitcom hipsters out there) to audition a plethora of celebrities for the role of the dour Scott. Golfer/marionette doppelganger Rory McIlroy, abra ...

Lee Westwood derides the U.S. Ryder Cup task force with an amusing Twitter blast at the PGA of America’s desperate ploy for winning at Hazletine in 2016. Lee Westwood has zero major championships, but winning seven Ryder Cup trophies in nine tries affords the British ex-pat a platform from which to scoff at the Americans’ latest attempt -- via a high-profile blue ribbon panel -- to wrest the cup from the Europ ...

Oakley as a golf brand? Exactly

Oct 13 2014 3:54pm CDT | Source: GolfWRX

On the surface, it doesn’t make much sense. Why would Oakley — a brand beloved by surfers, snowboarders, skiers, skaters and otherwise “cool” people — want to be a golf brand? Doesn’t it know that golfers are notoriously uncool, and that for every Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy there are 50 Tour players who make Chris Kirk seem exciting? GolfWRX regulars might have noticed that we’ve been learning a lot about the Southern-California based company lately. When Oakley signed Zach Johnson and Bubba W ...
