Bhullar tied 8th, eyes upset at Shanghai golf

Oct 31 2013, 5:00am CDT | by IANS

Shanghai, Oct 31 (IANS) India's Gaganjeet Bhullar is hopeful of creating an upset after he opened his campaign with a three-under-par 69 to take a share of eighth place in the $8.5 million WGC-HSBC Champions golf in Shanghai, China Thursday.

Shanghai, Oct 31 — India's Gaganjeet Bhullar is hopeful of creating an upset after he opened his campaign with a three-under-par 69 to take a share of eighth place in the $8.5 million WGC-HSBC Champions golf in Shanghai, China Thursday.

Although Bhullar trails first round leader Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland by four shots, India's sole representative at this Shanghai showpiece is confident of upstaging the star-studded field at the Sheshan International Golf Club this week.

"There's still a lot of golf left and my hopes are really high. I'm playing well and striking the ball really well and I guess anything and everything is possible over the next three days," said Bhullar.

Bhullar's confidence comes from his battling performance where he overcame a stumbling start in his opening eight holes before finding his way back into the mix with five birdies starting from the par-four nine.

"I was two-over after eight holes and I guess I was trying to figure out the green speed then," said Bhullar.

"But after that, I got really comfortable on the back-nine. I gave myself lots of birdie opportunities and I was glad I took advantage of all of them," added the Indian.

Sharing eighth place with six other players including Dustin Johnson of the United States, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Asian Tour honorary member and International Ambassador Ernie Els of South Africa, Bhullar believes the gap between players from Asia and the rest of the world will be closed once they find their self belief.

"I guess the only difference between us, Asian Tour players and these other world class players lies in our mental strength. With more and more opportunities to play in the big tournaments in this part of the world, we'll definitely be on par with them very soon."

Ryder Cup 2014: Live Updates for Day 2 Scoring and Standings for USA vs. Europe

Sep 27 2014 9:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Since the turn of the millennium, the United States has just one win on the Ryder Cup stage. After Friday's action, it appears the hopes of winning another are bleak. Europe has won the last two Ryder Cups and five of the last six due to several strong finishes. Thanks to a brilliant afternoon session on Friday, however, the team already held a 5-3 lead heading into the weekend. The Americans need a strong showing on Saturday in order to have the momentum swing in their direction. Here ...

Afternoon Momentum Shift Puts Bewildered Team USA in Trouble at 2014 Ryder Cup

Sep 26 2014 3:17pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

GLENEAGLES, Scotland — It was golf’s version of a Hail Mary pass. Or a bottom of the ninth home run. Or really a kick in the head. The United States grabbed control in the opening morning of Ryder Cup 2014 and then, stunningly, painfully, lost control in the afternoon. The first of three days of play on Friday, a cold wind ripping out of the Highlands, America looking so good, so surprising, but—as quickly as a 30-foot put can ...

Ryder Cup Format 2014: Breaking Down the Weekend's Match-Play Events

Sep 26 2014 2:54pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The first day of the 2014 Ryder Cup went the way it was expected to. Europe did come out of the gate slow in the morning session but rebounded in the afternoon to take a 5-3 lead and put the United States behind the eight ball.  While there will be plenty of stories written about how Europe will continue to steamroll the United States, what America must do to get back on track and everything in between, we are focused on how the Ryder Cup will be decided.  The uniq ...

Sergio Garcia sinks bunker shot to put Europe ahead, whiffs on high-five

Sep 26 2014 3:37am CDT | Source: SBNation

An old Ryder Cup pest (or hero) does it again for Europe, putting the home team ahead in three of the four early matches. We have our first hole-out roar of the Ryder Cup thanks to Sergio Garcia. After four poor tee shots from Sergio, Rory McIlroy, and the American duo of Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, it looked like par would be enough for at least a halve at the par-3 4th hole. But Garcia changed that quickly, blastin ...

GLENEAGLES, Scotland—All the talking (and boy, has there been a lot of talking) is over. Now we can look forward to the action, to business finally getting underway. Weary Phil Mickelson leads American team into his 10th straight Ryder Cup

Sep 25 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: SBNation

A tired, frustrated Mickelson calls his FedEx Cup playoff game a ‘crapshoot.’ After sneaking away in the middle of the night from his 2014 season-ending BMW Championship, the term likely applies to what Lefty will bring to the Ryder Cup. Phil Mickelson’s only top-10 finish in his forgettable 2014 season, a runner-up result at the PGA Championship in August, earned the popular southpaw a spot on his 10th consecutive U.S. Ryder Cup team. Unfortunately ...
