Bhullar tied 8th, eyes upset at Shanghai golf

Oct 31 2013, 5:00am CDT | by IANS

Shanghai, Oct 31 (IANS) India's Gaganjeet Bhullar is hopeful of creating an upset after he opened his campaign with a three-under-par 69 to take a share of eighth place in the $8.5 million WGC-HSBC Champions golf in Shanghai, China Thursday.

Shanghai, Oct 31 — India's Gaganjeet Bhullar is hopeful of creating an upset after he opened his campaign with a three-under-par 69 to take a share of eighth place in the $8.5 million WGC-HSBC Champions golf in Shanghai, China Thursday.

Although Bhullar trails first round leader Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland by four shots, India's sole representative at this Shanghai showpiece is confident of upstaging the star-studded field at the Sheshan International Golf Club this week.

"There's still a lot of golf left and my hopes are really high. I'm playing well and striking the ball really well and I guess anything and everything is possible over the next three days," said Bhullar.

Bhullar's confidence comes from his battling performance where he overcame a stumbling start in his opening eight holes before finding his way back into the mix with five birdies starting from the par-four nine.

"I was two-over after eight holes and I guess I was trying to figure out the green speed then," said Bhullar.

"But after that, I got really comfortable on the back-nine. I gave myself lots of birdie opportunities and I was glad I took advantage of all of them," added the Indian.

Sharing eighth place with six other players including Dustin Johnson of the United States, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Asian Tour honorary member and International Ambassador Ernie Els of South Africa, Bhullar believes the gap between players from Asia and the rest of the world will be closed once they find their self belief.

"I guess the only difference between us, Asian Tour players and these other world class players lies in our mental strength. With more and more opportunities to play in the big tournaments in this part of the world, we'll definitely be on par with them very soon."

Senior British Open 2014: Convincing Win Proves Bernhard Langer Is King of Tour

Jul 28 2014 6:00am CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

There was no Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth or Tiger Woods contending with Bernhard Langer at the Senior British Open at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, but the 56-year-old played like a young man amongst seniors en route to a 13-shot win. Per Justin Ray of the Golf Channel, the win was the largest in Champions Tour history. On Sunday, Langer punctuated his performance with a five-under 67 to finish 18 under par for the tournament. When Sunday ...

Winners and Losers of the Week in Golf

Jul 27 2014 5:39pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

The week after a PGA Tour major can be a dull affair and isn't usually filled with high drama. Fortunately, these past seven days bucked that trend.  While many of the PGA Tour's best were still recovering from jet lag, Tim Clark and Jim Furyk were battling it out at Royal Montreal.  Across the pond, Bernhard Langer dominated the field at the Senior British Open. Elsewhere, the United States team bowed out of the inaugural International Crown competition.  So, a lot went on ...

Bernhard Langer wins Senior Open Championship by record 13 shots, joins Ryder Cup discussion

Jul 27 2014 2:04pm CDT | Source: SBNation

Bernhard Langer just won a Senior major in a dominating fashion you rarely ever see in golf, at any level. If Rory McIlroy's multi-shot win last Sunday felt like a cruise to the Open Championship, what should we call Bernhard Langer's dominance one week later at the Senior Open? This was Tiger Woods at Pebble Beach in 2000 dominant, where a player overwhelms a field and course and is simply playing a different tournament than everyone else. It seemed Langer would have ...

Why There Are Few Married Women's Tennis Stars and Why It Matters

Jul 25 2014 11:07pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

When it comes to balancing long-term relationships and careers, professional men's tennis players seem to do a better job than their female counterparts. Maria Kirilenko recently announced that she was breaking off her engagement to hockey star Alex Ovechkin. She became the third high-profile professional woman's tennis player in the past two years to see marriage plans derailed. Earlier this year Rory McIlroy called off his engagement to Caroline Wozniacki after ...

Being the best

Jul 23 2014 10:00pm CDT | Source: Spectator Magazine

This time last year, England’s cricketers were 2-0 up against Australia, two thirds of the way towards their third consecutive series victory in sport’s longest-established international contest. Not quite top of the world, they were nevertheless a good team in the prime of life. The winter before, they had beaten India on their dusty pitches, quite an achievement. What a falling-off there has been. Since the turn of the year, England have lost Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott and Kevin Piet ...

Olympic Golf Selection Process Excludes Many Countries

Jul 23 2014 3:03pm CDT | Source: Bleacher Report

Finally, the International Golf Federation let the real cat out of the bag on who will be able to compete in the 2016 Olympics. They did it during British Open week, figuring it would get buried in other headlines. Now comes the revelation that, no matter how far up a player is in the rankings, only the top four from any country can compete, if there are more than four in the top 15. If Australia had four in the top 15, all four could go. Today, they have two. The US has eight in t ...

Clark: Give Nike Golf credit where credit is due

Jul 23 2014 12:00pm CDT | Source: GolfWRX

Remember all the criticism hurled at Rory McIlroy when he decided to switch to Nike Golf equipment? It’s quieter now, isn’t it? The meteoric rise of Nike Golf has been nothing short of amazing considering that not very long ago, Nike Golf was the new kid on the block in the golf club business; a young company in a very old, well-developed industry. The success of Tiger Woods — and more recently McIlroy ...
