Toronto Raptors forward Rudy Gay is reportedly on his way to the Sacramento Kings.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports offers more details in his Dec. 8 report:

"The Toronto Raptors have reached an agreement in principle to send Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

"The Kings will send Greivis Vasquez, John Salmons, Patrick Patterson and Chuck Hayes to the Raptors. The Kings also acquire Quincy Acy and Aaron Gray in the deal, sources said.

"The Raptors and Gay had become increasingly unhappy with each other, league sources said, and Gay's contract was an obstacle to the franchise's desire to begin the rebuilding process."

Doug Smith of the Toronto Star writes the move would be Raptors general manager Masai Uriji's "boldest" and "most significant." He also emphasizes Uriji placing more concern on the franchise's long-term status rather than immediate gratification.

Smith says the impending departure of Gay would free up $38 million in cap space for the next two seasons. It also addresses a logjam at small forward with DeMar DeRozan.

The departures of Gay and forward-center Andrea Bargnani means the Raptors "would have cleared more than $20 million off their books for next season," per Brian Windhorst and Chris Boussard of ESPN.

On the part of the Kings, Vasquez's trade to Toronto would mean Isaiah Thomas moving to the starting point guard spot. This is also the second major trade the team has been involved in in the last two weeks.

On Nov. 26, Sacramento traded defensive specialist Luc Richard Mbah a Moute to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Derrick Williams, who had seen his playing time dwindle after the return of star forward Kevin Love.

Prior to the seven-player trade, Gay had been averaging 19.4 points, good for second on the team. However, he was shooting at a 39-percent clip -- the lowest of his NBA career.

"The Kings plan to use Gay at the stretch-four position," Wojnarowski notes.
